Subject: Is Iceland's next volcanic eruption about to happen?

The Iceland Meteorological Office has increased the risk of an eruption at Bárðarbunga (or Bardarbunga) volcano, after hundreds of earthquakes were reported over the weekend. The risk level has been set to orange, which is the fourth-highest on a five-level scale.

Here we asked Dave McGarvie, a volcanologist at The Open University, to explain what we need to know.

Just To Let You All Know…

In the case of a major Bardabunga eruption enough to cause a deep winter as in 1783-1784’s eruption of Laki, would there be an opportunity to gauge the extent of anthropomorphic carbon dioxide production effects in the climate change debate? ie; elongated recovery period or other cumulative effects

Never mind climate change, won’t someone think of the disrupted flights??

Think of all the fuel they’ll save.

Mz Tamb & I spent 9 days in Zurich during the last volcanic episode.
Nice place Zurich……………. but not 9 days worth of nice.

Anthropomorphic carbon dioxide is a very naughty boy.

There was some stuff on the net after the Iceland volcano which suggested that by stopping flying the CO2 increase was lower than normal.

Quite possibly. Let’s say that a volcano produces a measured increase in CO2, measured by satellites and weather stations. Then the time scale required to return to near pre-eruption levels would give data that is not otherwise obtainable except by inaccurate inference from mathematical models.
