Subject: China’s supersonic submarine

Researchers in China are reporting that they’ve taken a big step towards creating a supersonic submarine. This technology, which could just as easily be applied to weaponized torpedoes as military or civilian submarines, could theoretically get from Shanghai to San Francisco — about 6,000 miles — in just 100 minutes. If all this doesn’t sound crazy enough, get this: This new advance by the Chinese is based on supercavitation, which was originally developed by the Soviets in the ’60s, during the Cold War.

more

Interesting and would be impressive to see.

On an aside, I’m just about willing to bet that the concept of warp drive(shrinking space ahead of a craft and expanding it behind) is technically cavitation of space and that the device that was recently tested at NASA works on this principal

Now the Americans will have to develop an underwater shield system

Nope it’s a real thing.
The Russian Shkval torpedo can cruise at over 300 knots underwater. Given more power it’d go even faster. Only something like 1% of the surface of the torpedo is actually in the water at any point, thus reducing drag hugely.

280 knots is a long way from supersonic, and the shkval is a long way from a sub.

If only 1% of its in the water at a time is it still a submarine, or is it only a part-time or casual submarine

Exactly. Which is why a much larger sub probably has a better chance of going much faster as it can have far more powerful engines and a lot more fuel.

Wouldn’t the submarine work the same way

OK, this idea is interesting, but what if instead of creating an air pocket around the sub, we could actually get the sub out of the water, and flying through the air.

Wouldn’t that be something? I bet you could get it to go even faster than 300 knots.

Good thinking. Who knows, the Chinese might be the first to land a submarine on Mars.

Or Taiwan.

Isn’t sonic velocity in water higher than in the atmosphere? and zero in vacuo?

And what if this sub hits a shipping container, whale, drift nets etc and all the crap that’s floating around in the ocean ?
