Roughie,
You need to understand that you both come from the opposite ends of the conservation spectrum. Just because you both GAF doesn’t mean you’re both right.Helix is a SCIENTIST. You are a FIELD OBSERVER. In an ideal world, you’d compliment each other.
The reality is that for whatever reason, many academics do not want to trust the decades of undocumented and unsubstantiated observations made by “uneducated” observers. Sometimes this is entirely correct as the “uneducated” observers will jump to highly tenuous conclusions on something that has no evidence to support it (Us scientific folk are often partially to blame here as we’ll often let our pet theories and hypotheses out during casual conversation). Other times the old blokes who have been catching barra for 50+ years know more about the life history and ecology of the fish than the current batch of researchers.
Sometimes you just talk shit! – I respect you no less for that. If you don’t talk shit, you’re not normal.
I spend my life trying to bridge the gap between scientists/educated in other fields/farmers/land holders/those who left school half way through year 10/Idiot conspiracy theorists/whacked out weed growers/just plain old fuckwits for what I see as important conservation work.
Mate, If she gives you the shits, ignore her. I’m sure Helix would be happy to do the same unless you’re talking utter crap (which sometimes you do!).
Personally, I’ll listen to pretty much anything Helix says as she has an incredible grasp on taxonomy, ecology and conservation. I’ll also listen to you as you have a wealth of knowledge of “on the ground” techniques and observations.
Jebus mate, kiss and make up – (OK, I can’t see that happening while the earth continues to revolve around the sun) – but you both have something positive to contribute. Stop with the sledging. It detracts from both of your knowledge bases and contributes nothing to the conversation. If someone wants to hang shit on you, ignore it and wear it as a badge of pride.
Mate, It’s getting tired. Let’s all work towards the same goal.
