A UN report says that 10 percent of the female population of the world has been raped or sexually assaulted by the age of 20. Among its other conclusions,
- 120 million girls – one in 10 – are raped or sexually attacked by the age of 20
- Boys also report experiences of sexual violence, but to a lesser extent than girls
- The most common form of sexual violence for both genders is cyber-victimisation
- 95,000 children and teenagers were murdered in 2012
- Slightly over one in three students aged 13-15 experience regular bullying in school
- Six out of 10 children aged between two and 14 are physically punished by carers on a regular basis
In many countries child abuse is accepted as “normal”, although statistics indicate that the effects of the abuse can cause deleterious effects for the rest of the individual’s life.
