Subject: HATE MOWING THE LAWN?

While it may suit keen fishermen, this experimental concept for an Australian coastal home is not for the faint-hearted.
The design for a five-storey coastal getaway by Melbourne architecture firm Modscape was inspired by the way barnacles cling to the hull of a ship.
The entry to the home is from the top-floor garage where brave souls have the option of taking the lift or a winding staircase down to the living areas.
The home design comprises three bedrooms, two bathrooms as well as living and dining areas.
The open-air ground level feaures a barbecue area and a spa.
According to Modscape: “The living spaces feature minimalistic furnishings to ensure that the transcendent views of the ocean and the unique spatial experience of the location remain the integral focal point of the design.”
Modscape are known for their use of prefabricated technology and given the precarious location of this property the home would not be built in the traditional sense, it would be assembled.
As Modscape puts it, the home would comprise “a series of stacked modules that are anchored into the cliff face using engineered steel pins”.
Though it may be a poor choice of words, the home also boasts an “absolute connection with the ocean”.

The design is purely conceptual at this point but that hasn’t stopped it being picked up by international architecture blogs.
Curbed.com described it as “a shotgun-style home that’s been needlessly tipped on its side”.

I don’t like heights. That looks like a soft marly limestone it’s anchored into. I don’t like its chances of staying there long.

Reminds me a bit of the cliffs at Dee Why. A friend of mine (Chris Y, for the benefit of MV) had a cave hideaway that required one to climb over the cliff edge to access it. It still gives me goose bumps thinking about it sometimes.

They sure have a big septic tank, although used toilet paper caught on the rocks might spoil the view.

That rock is much softer and crumblier than the Hawkesbury Sandstone.

Not just ocean shorelines. I lived in a house on Sydney harbour that ran three stories down the face of a cliff. It did have land underneath it but the entrance was across a bridge from the top of the cliff to the front door. When a decent gale blew across the harbour the whole place used to shake..

no mowing is easy… many people around these parts use fake lawn… the toruble with fake lawn is 1. it looks fake and 2. weeds still grow through. You can always ditch the lawn and grow a native garden with a path instead…

I’ve got a garden that’s essentially clay, when it gets dry it cracks and its quite bumpy
should I somehow dig the entire soil over spray it with gypsum and add other soil to it and then level it?
spread a layer of proper soil over the garden and lay turf on it?
just spray the clay soil with gypsum and just level out the garden with soil and then sow with fresh grass seeds?
I’m trying to make the lawn respectable
does the water saver stuff really work?

Fake lawn is ok as long as you’r not trying to make it look like lawn. There’s a house in my street has a putting green covered in astroturf. Actually doesn’t too bad, it’s done nice and neatly, and is not pretending to be anything else.

Neighbours of mine recently ripped up their entire front lawn, laid down new turf and spend two hours every day watering it all (they have a rainwater tank).
