Are spiders getting bigger? Warm summer has caused arachnids to grow larger, say experts

Enjoyed the summer? You’re not alone: Experts have warned that homes may be set for an invasion of larger than normal spiders who have feasted on an abundance of prey in the last few months.

That’s because this year the warm summer has allowed certain spiders to eat more than usual and grow to their upper limits.

And it could mean we’ll see more and more large spiders in our homes in the coming months.

There is a limit as to how big invertebrates like spiders can grow. Having access to more food might make them a little bigger, but these are no comparison to the giants of long ago. It was at a time when the air had a higher oxygen content, which allowed invertebrates to breathe more easily and hence grow larger.

Scorpion – The gigantic Pulmonoscorpius from the early Carboniferous reached a length of up to 70 cm (28 in).
Dragonfly – The late Carboniferous giant dragonfly-like insect Meganeura grew to wingspans of 75 cm (30 in).
Millipede – To 2.6 metres long millipede-like Arthropleura being the largest known land invertebrate of all time.

My heightened sense of immediate panic blocked logic for a few minutes.

We had a coldish winter and a pretty chilly spring so far. I doubt the spiders will be growing to unnerving proportions on the island this year.
