I have just peeled and cut up for my dinner plate tonight…. a carrot from my little vegie patch.:)

Man it’s sweet, crisp and so full of flavour. I think a carrot from the garden has to be an all time favorite of mine.

What have you been eating either from your garden or your kitchen that has teased your taste buds lately???

Do you think if its picked from your own garden…it tastes better???? I think it does, as we the eater grew it.

The only things I’ve got in the remnant of the rental vegie patch are: curly parsley, flat leaf/italian/continental parsley, shallots (as in the little french onion-y type of shallots). And 2-inch high pak choi going to seed!

So I made a risotto thingy last week and had finely chopped shallots and parsley in it. Loved it :)

Even better, loved being able to say that something I grew was in our dinner :D

Made fried rice last night. Guests commented on the wonderful edge the corriander gave it. Very proud that the commented flavour came from my own garden. Nothing else at fruiting/vegging stage yet. But I have to remember to use more corriander – it’s going wild.

Re onion smells on your hands. Two tricks. One, wash with salt. Or two, hold a stainless steel spoon with all your fingers on it and run cold water over your hands. You can buy fancy smancy ‘stainless steel soap’ bars but you don’t need to; just need a bit of cutlery.

Yes, it does. There’s a lot more flavour and goodness in home grown vegies because they are so fresh, and they’ve been fed on good stuff, not chemicals. IMHO.

I did too! Or within the last couple of days – lovely. Also some broccoli and snowpeas and some cauli flowers -which are bolting.

As some of you may be aware, I am on a weight management programme (which is going very well thank you).

so strictly speaking I am not “supposed” to eat during the day: only my meal supplements. However, I just lurve going into my tiny vegetable patch in the middle of the day and picking the semi-ripe tomatoes, even the ones the birds have been snacking on…a sun-warmed tomato fresh from the garden (with the kelp fert washed off) is great for the morale…as I am encouraged to eat 4 – 5 cups of salad or vegetables (no corn or potatoes) of an evening, I figure that the odd Tommy Toe or San Maranzo (F7) in the middle of the day doesn’t upset the “plan” much, whilst simultaneously boosting my morale…

They are great in stir-fries (which I am permitted to have with low-calorie sauces such as soy and oyster): MrD comments that these tomatoes add that extra “something”…

I have also found that the home-grown herbs such as thyme give far more flavour than the shop-bought ones…every time I purchase a bunch of asparagus (and I am grateful that the supermarket stocks them) I think of Lucky’s fresh asparagus…had a chew on a raw one the other night and the nutty flavour was a pleasant surprise…

…There used to be a market gardener here…his sugar snaps were so sweet I bought them by the several kilo lot because my children wanted them for snacks at school…

We will be able to cultivate citrus trees in the backyard come February 2009…

:D :D :D

I know when I am planting out seeds, my mouth waters at the thought of organic food down the track.

Always amazed with carrot seeds, how such a tiny little thing can grow to such a yummy food. So as I watch the seed germinate and grow, I think of how yummy it tastes and them my taste buds are rewarded. :D:D

i agree carrots are the veges you can’t buy – they taste horrible from the shops and delicious when home grown.
sweetcorn is not sweet from the shops, and fresh, homegrown spuds are completely different to the stored ones.
really – every crisp, fresh homegrown vege is superior to the older, starchier store items.

And as for tomatoes…. there is simply no comparison to lovely sweet and firm home grown organic tomatoes.
If you haven’t tasted a home grown tomato , you havent tasted a tomato at all.

most vegies and fruit taste so much better from own garden. the two main reasons why:
- no long trip and long time sitting in the shop, with chemicals & treatments to make them look good. fact is the sugars start breaking down as soon as the vegies and fruit are picked. so the longer the time from ground/tree to plate, the more depleted the taste. they manage to keep them looking reasonable for long times but, this is at the expense of taste.
- whilst we do feed the vegies/fruit fairly well with manures and such (which they need); this is not the same like most farmers have to do to compete on price…super feeding the vegies and fruit with a cocktail of powerful fertilizers. it does provide a quick crop which matures all at once….tastes terrible.
