Prediction of mortality has focused on disease and frailty, although antecedent biomarkers may herald broad physiological decline. Olfaction, an ancestral chemical system, is a strong candidate biomarker because it is linked to diverse physiological processes. We sought to determine if olfactory dysfunction is a harbinger of 5-year mortality in the National Social Life, Health and Aging Project , a nationally representative sample of older U.S. adults. 3,005 community-dwelling adults aged 57–85 were studied in 2005–6 (Wave 1) and their mortality determined in 2010–11 (Wave 2).

Are they linking it to a precursor to a decline in health or the inability to smell could increase the odds of you dying from something related to needing the ability to smell.

They only looked at mortality (not ‘decline in health’), so, it’s just risk of being dead over a 5 year period. Your odds of dying go up in that 5 years if you’ve lost the sense of smell and are aged betweem 57-85.

one of the few parts of the brain that grows new brain cells?…..so if smell decline corresponded with loss of cell turnover (a different thing I know) elsewhere throughout the body, sort of the end of your DNA replicating…..

There exists a person whom I know well, who drinks a bit at least one night a week. By a bit I do mean until he’s gone awol. He was given a taxi ride by some bloke he met in the local watering hole and obviously didn’t pay much attention to that until the bloke came inside with him. When the other bloke wanted him to crash out so he could steal everything in the place my mate came to his senses and said no. The thief tried to king hit him and got him on the third eye. Though my mate smashed the shyte out of the would be thief and had him scuttling for exits to save his life, he still to this day cannot smell anything.

I’ve just been up Wilson’s Creek .. took a paddle in a bag of custard apples, a bag of avo’s and a dozen organic free range eggs but it seemed I needed to do more. Had to fix a screen window that hadn’t been repaired or in place in years. Did that and drove home in the dark in totally unfamiliar territory. The purpose of the journey? To see fireflies and to chat to someone whom found me on the internet.

Lived nextdoor to a guy that got assaulted badly (lived in the wrong end of town at one time I did), crack over the head, had no sense of smell or olfactory capacity at all as consequence. Remember him well, first person I ever met that apparently had zero fear of spiders, sort of played with them and stroked them.

Do you have a portable oxygen source of any kind?
Not needed, i just left things too late, slowed down too much and by the time I got to hospital my lungs were white and full of crap. No surfaces for oxygen transfer.
so what did they do to get rid of it?
Wire brush and dettol.

On my before last trip to hospital and on oxygen I thought I was close. But it didn’t actually make me think of regrets and such as the cliche goes, I was just focused on breathing.

OK. I happened to be reading about them the other day. Seems that portable units that provide around 27% oxygen from air are in common use for people with lung issues.

Antibiotics and physio. At the moment my lungs are fine, I can breath easily and can walk a km or so with ease so don’t require oxygen.

Or better yet, professional doctors and not random people on internet forums.

Oh, shit. My sense of smell has been going away quite fast in the last few months. Seriously. I used to have a great sense of smell, Mrs V a poor one. Just recently it seems she can now smell lots of things I no longer notice, where I formerly would have.
Make sure I get a tops wake, please.
We haven’t even had a proper memorial for Geoff D yet. Wait your turn.

Yeah.
I printed out some photos of him at that pud at Michael V’s house. Seems like such a long time ago.
