Don’t know what our IGA stocks in that line, haven’t looked yet. But is any of that stuff actually worth buying?

I’m assuming the IGA would have similar non-prescription cough stuff to the chemist, but cheaper.

I think I’ve read that the research says cough mixtures don’t work. I personally like the ones with alcohol in them. Which is odd for a non drinker, really.

Ah, seems the research is for their use in children:

http://sciencebasedpharmacy.wordpress.com/2009/05/19/cough-and-cold-products-for-children/

I can’t find anything much about how well they work in adults though.

I find Vicks blue cough lollies work the best for me. They really do stop the cough. But they taste ‘orrible. But if I’m working, or sitting in a lecture and I really don’t want to cough, they work.

OK thanks buffy. Vicks blue cough lollies on the list then.

A few glasses of wine is adequate general medicine for manflu. I’m just looking for a bit of extra cough relief.

Depends. Sometimes sucking a boiled lolly is all that’s needed.

Most cough suppresants are S2 or S3 – meaning they are only sold in a pharmacy. There’s mixed evidence for expectorant type cough mixtures – the ones that say ‘chesty’ or ‘mucous’ on them and are most commonly sold in supermarkets with things like ammoniium chloride et al in it.

If you want to stop coughing, get something with Dextraomethorphan, Pholcodine or dihydrocodeine in it. None of these will be found in IGA.

Ta poik. Our chemist isn’t open on weekends anyway. Hopefully by Monday the cough will have eased, we’ll see.

Just scoffed one of the Vicks menthol VapoDrops (I assume this is what buffy meant) and yes, it has a soothing and mildly cough-suppressing effect. Probably doesn’t blend well with sherry but since I can’t taste much anyway atm, I’m not going to complain :)

For hardcore sore throats and annoying tickles, I use and recommend Strepsils with anaesthetic.

Noted, ta DA. I used to like Strepsils as a child, the ones that came in little tins. One of the benefits of being ill, along with not having to go to school.

And when you finished ‘em, you had a nice little tin, which would be handy for keeping things in.

Strepsils tins full of brads or tiny screws, nuts or washers are a global Shed tradition.

That’s probably all you can get. Lately I haven’t been able to get the peppermint ones that I prefer, although searching on the interwebs it looks like Chemist Warehouse might have them. Not sure if I can be bothered buying cough drops online though.

Strepsils work for the sore throat, but I found they do nothing for the coughing.

There are multiple types of lozenges for sore throats.

Benzydamine and lignocaine are ingredients to look for, the first is an antiinflammatory the second a local anaesthetic. Some also come with a cough suppressant such as dextromethorphan in them, usually a particular brand, such as Dif*lam. Any other ingredients are fairly pointless i.e. antiseptics.

Yes, last I heard it was going to be strictly followed after the stress test…

Perhaps the next stress test?
