Subject: Genetics Calculator

G’day Brains Trust,
I was wondering if one of you could build me a virtual breeder/genetics calculator.

The one at http://www.kirstenmunson.com/cockatiels/blue.html doesn’t seem to work with the browser I use anymore, and didn’t have all the mutations anyway.

The one athttp://www.gencalc.com/gen/eng_genc.php?sp=0Cock is more comprehensive, and is easier for me to use, but it’s still missing quite a few mutations.

All bar one of the mutationS (AFAIK) are listed here http://www.neitokakadut.com/en/colors-and-genetics/cockatiel-colors (ignoring Scimmel or however it’s spelled). The missing mutation is Thrush Chested, and it’s MOI is autosomal dominant.

Thanks in advance.

I note from one of the links the statement “This is the part where many cockatiel owners run away screaming.”

I can program anything – except a user interface.

Why can’t you just punnet square it?

I want something that’s quick and easy.
So far, the gencalc one’s the best I’ve come across, but, as I said, it doesn’t have all the mutations.
Something that’s pretty much a clone of that, with the missing things, would be good…
Or even just an Excel doc that will do it for me…
I’m such a numpty when it comes to doing such things myself

I’ll give some thought to writing one in Excel for you.

Genetics of this sort ought to be trivially easy. But I have to understand it first. eg. how reliably can you determine the sex of cockateils?

I haven’t forgotten Fresnel Chick’s original question.

Mol – have a bit of a play around with the Gencalc one.
I found doing that was the best way to familiarise myself with it.
1.0 means male, and 0.1 means female.
Just select a whole bunch of random mutations, and process it.

Sorry I haven’t been around lately – have been busy renovating/moving house.

I wanted to process my birds, but ran into a few problems – one of my hens is pewter, which isn’t an option. It’s a sex-linked recessive mutation. My other hen is a double factor thrush chested, and thrush chested isn’t an option either. It’s an autosomal dominant mutation. I’ve been using Cinnamon and Ashen Dilute as substitutes for the time being, but if I get any more birds that actually have those mutations, things might get quite messy…

AFAIK my birds are as follows: 1.0 split lutino, split wf (possible either pearl or split pearl, or thrush chested – will need to test-breed. Also possible split pied)
0.1 pewter, pearl, split pied (possible split wf – will need to test-breed).
0.1 (assumed) double factor thrush chested blue, split pied.

I know it’s a big ask, but a mobile app, where I could also keep a studbook would be grouse.
