Gough Whitlam dies aged 98; Family says ‘loving and generous’ father was ‘source of inspiration’
Tuesdays 21 Oct 2014, 8:20am
Former Australian prime minister Gough Whitlam has died.
Mr Whitlam led the country through a period of massive social change from 1972 to 1975 before his ousting by governor-general Sir John Kerr.
“Our father, Gough Whitlam, has died this morning at the age of 98,” Mr Whitlam’s family said in a statement.
“A loving and generous father, he was a source of inspiration to us and our families and for millions of Australians.
“There will be a private cremation and a public memorial service.”
The spirit goes on

I use to entertain friends doing a mean impersonation of Gough, back in the day.
I would always start – “My fellow Australians…”

Thank the FSM we only had to suffer three years of it.
Any longer and Australia would be another Greece, wallowing in a REAL sovereign debt crisis. A couple of decent humanitarian gestures does not make up for economic incompetence in my book, and I’ll keep my hero worship for those who are more deserving

But the key political issue had become the war in Vietnam. Anti-war demonstrations plagued the Coalition government. In 1966, as deputy opposition leader, Mr Whitlam visited Vietnam to tour the 1st Australian Task Force area. He visited again as opposition leader in 1968, and criticised the Gorton government’s successive troop increases at the behest of US president Lyndon B Johnson.
“The important thing is, we ought to be trying to bring about an end to hostilities in South Vietnam. We will not achieve this by continuing an attack on North Vietnam,” he said.

Australia has lost a great Prime Minister and a great statesman with the passing of Gough Whitlam. Even his political enemies and detractors hold a grudging respect for this man who was a giant in both stature and influence. His family and friends must surely be proud of a life well lived. My condolences to his children and grandchildren.
The legacy of his short time in power during the early seventies is a testament to his inspiration and ideology. His Labor government was the precursor to land rights for indigenous Australians, the Racial Discrimination Act, the end of the White Australia policy, multiculturalism, free tertiary education, free health care, environmental protection, just to name a few.
He wasn’t perfect, as few of us are, but he didn’t shy away from his convictions when it would have been politically expedient to do so, and our politicians of today could do much worse than to follow his example. My advice to those who fear our current government is slowly eroding many of the progressive social policies that Gough Whitlam and his government enacted is to “maintain the rage”.

to be honest, I’m too young to remember him. I was born the year he was elected, and only 3 when he was dismissed. I only know of him what I read in books. I guess his legacy is that many of his reforms weren’t undone by the next governments that followed, they are still with us by and large.

No.
The SMH won’t publish letters if they’ve been submitted to other newspapers.
I told her I had also sent it to the Newcastle Herald, so I had to ring the editor there and ask him nicely if he would mind not publishing the letter, which he had already shortlisted for tomorrow’s paper.
I had him join me when buying cheeses at the Bega factory some years ago. I had no idea who he was, however, as we were the only 2 customers there at the time I noticed that he did receive exceptional service. Outside he had a fancy car with a fancy driver waiting (who carefully placed said cheeses into the boot). Mr Speedy, who was waiting in our car beside his, explained who he was. We laughed at the formality of it all and came up with the saying
“May I take your cheeses, Sir?”, which we still use when appropriate
Just think how much this car and driver cost the taxpayer; he made it to 98!

the average duty on manufactured imports fell from about 40 per cent in 1946-47 to just more than 20 per cent in the early 1960s; but the tariff on motor vehicles remained at between 40 per cent and 50 per cent, increasing the distortion in favour of the car industry. Americans could buy a new car with 25 weeks’ average earnings; given our barriers to trade, Australians needed twice that.
The first chink in the protectionist armour came with the Whitlam government’s 25 per cent across-the-board tariff reduction in 1973. Intended to curb inflation, Gough Whitlam’s move provoked a fierce reaction, with Holden immediately announcing 5000 sackings. Bob Hawke led a furious campaign against the cut, with claims it would send Australia’s economy “back to the stone age”.
As the government caved in, the outcome was an 85 per cent local content requirement that, along with other measures, doubled and then trebled protection for the car industry, in exchange for a pledge from Holden that every retrenched worker would be re-hired.
That set the pattern for the next 40 years: all reductions in tariffs on cars would be accompanied by new subsidies and non-tariff barriers to trade; and, whenever these seemed insufficient, the firms would threaten to leave and the unions would threaten the government.
CrazyNeutrino said:

like all policies those that are popular, or unpopular; or those that are good for a country or bad is all relative to the sociopolitical and/or economic conditions of the time.

The only time I’ve seen dropbear angrier was when he got his man bag snatched in Rome

It is becoming common parlance these days to repeat the last word in full after using an initialisation or acronym.

Exactly. Given that sometimes the same initials or acronym can mean different things , it might be a helpful clarification to state the last work in full just to clarify which one you mean.
English is an evolving language and all that.
That theory falls down when applied to LED Lights…

Change it one of the words then, rather than specifically the last one.

I can only imagine the uproar when the ABC cancel Q & A next week for a doco special about the Whitlam years.
I’m sick of having to open a “witch is dead” thread to read about Gough, so I’ll start a more respectful one.

Political forums going off as well. Seems to me that for atheist luvvies Gough was the equivalent of Jesus made real in his second coming, absolute adoration and worship.

I don’t read News either – because they want me to pay.
ABC, SBS, Fairfax, The West Australian and The New Daily for me, plus commercial radio during the day.

You should not restrict what you read for ideological reasons.

Yeah I know, there;s a few in the sports forums too.
Mind you, there’s also a few free-market neo-cons and family-values Christian types who see him as the very anti-christ.
Superphosphate bounty.
Any longer and Australia would be another Greece, wallowing in a REAL sovereign debt crisis. A couple of decent humanitarian gestures does not make up for economic incompetence in my book, and I’ll keep my hero worship for those who are more deserving.
It’s fair to say that as a PM financial affairs were not Gough’s strong point.
Nonetheless Dropbear’s critique is only loosely based on facts. The Whitlam administration brought government spending up to around 24% of GDP where it has remained, more or less through Hawke/Keating, Howard and R/G/R governments.
But the Whitlam Government returned surpluses in 73, 74 and 75. The 75-76 budget went into deficit and deficits remained through the early years of the Fraser government. But the really big deficits occurred at the very end of the Fraser government when, after 6 years of government spending blew out to 26-27% of GDP. And that was without Medicare of course.
All that free university education and free health care had to be paid for by someone.
Steal from the poor farmers and give to the young labor voters in the city to buy popularity.
That works well in the city. What are you going to eat when all the farmers are gone?
