Hi team, I’ve recently just cut some Yukkas down. They were about 2 years old, in pots and about 1800mm tall. They hadn’t had their lower leaves trimmed, so that was done and the top was lopped about 600mm down.

The next bare section of the stem was cut about 600mm and planted in sand soil mix and kept moist, but not wet in filtered sun.

The remaining stump is still in the pot and has a bare 600mm trunk.

My concern is that the mid section and the base have not thrown any new growth after 3 weeks. The cut area is starting to dry and harden. The original tops look happy

Have I destroyed the base plant?

You really need to be looking for pups around the base.

thanks, Roughbarked. The base of the original has become bulbous in 2 years, like a sherry bottle. How long should it take till I expect pups? What do I do with those pups should they appear?

each of them will be a new plant. I’m saying this from memory but a quick google says.. hang on a bit, I could be wrong. It may be dependent upon species and age but once cut it may produce new plants at base. Don Burke says this about this species from cuttings

This person says what I mean about pups to a degree
