This Bar Shouldered Dove has been ‘pottering’ around the hanging pots for weeks.

It will sit in one for a while and then move onto another.

Sometimes it makes a cooing noise and sometimes not.

I don’t know if it’s thinking about nesting …………… but it must have missed those lessons……….

In an orchid pot

In an episcia pot

A bit hard to see but in a miniature wandering jew pot

Could be checking out potential nest sites I suppose, or maybe it is keeping your plants insect free?

When I was growing up, the doves nested in our hanging baskets every year.

Rats used to run down the chain and eat the eggs though.

Ahhhh……………… well that explains it !!!!!!!!!!!!!

I live in Wulagi known as ‘the leafy surburb’.

Having said that, birds nesting in pot plants is a first for me. Time will tell……………….

My dad had a big old pot out the back with a bougainvillia (sp??) in it.. also housed a huge family of mice which would come streaming up out of the tunnels in the potting mix if you poured water into it grin
They’d sit in the lattice and wait until the water stopped before going back home..

This was in City Beach – a very coastal suburb.

I’ve had them nesting in an Orchid and a Nodding Violet. This year I’m doing patrols of pots to prevent it. We only get Blackbirds doing it and they are ferals.

Yep – I dunno about your fancy eastern states doves, but here in Perth the doves make really shoddy nests, so the babies would usually be much safer in a hanging basket! :D
