School girls when waiting for a bus after school seem to always sit on the ground in a circle, chatting as they would have done back when their menfolk would have been out hunting animals for the pot, the children would have been corraled by the circle, leaving the mothers free to chat whilst preparing food or mending clothes and talking, talking, talking.

They’re swapping the stuff they’ve just shoplifted in Coles.

they can all see one another easily in a circle

if they all sitting in a line it would be difficult to see one another and require a lot a head turning

I think you will find that the women in hunter-gatherer societies actually spent more time ‘hunting’ than the men. Women collected the main food, vegetables and roots and small animals every day. Large animal meat from hunting was not an everyday foodstuff. So it was probably the men sitting around between hunts.

:)

The men did provide not just food but skins for warmth and bones for weapons and digging.
While they were sitting around they were probably developing the ideas of strategy and critical thinking. : : :)

I’ve read the opposite. Supposedly the quiet needed for active hunting compared to the discussion allowed when women were actively gathering was a big factor in the development of language. Moreover such a theory sought to explain the more loquacious nature of women when compared to men.

I guess it really depends upon how much time is spent hunting. I can’t imagine why men would be allowed free time that was denied to women.

If african tribes are a guide the men are actually the lazy ones and sit around all day doing thier hair. Serial. The women gather the food, carry the water and firewood, cook the meals, clean the huts and look after the children. The men stir every now and then to hunt but the main job is maintaining the borders of the territory.

That’s African tribes , Europeans wouldn’t be willing to shift untold gallons of water by hand either.

I’ve seen one programme where they are digging
An open cut mine – by hand!!!

Slowly shifting a shovel of dirt up the side of a mine wall

Brainless

Don’t forget that all that talking has a big play in selective breeding. :)

Europeans shifted water by hand, the houses weren’t plumbed you know. Took a walk to the well or the stream with a bucket.

If you can be bothered reading it:

An academic assessment of the roles of males and females in hunter gatherer societies.

The Africans do this for great distances probably on the hot sun

You could make a clay pipe / channel to allow water to flow to a destination.

Except for those ones who live near to the rivers albeit depending on hippos and crocodiles and the ones with wells and soaks.
