saw a documentary last night at the cinema – The Man from Coxs River. About using a 3rd generation local horseman to remove some brumbies from the national park and water catchment area instead of shooting them. Was filmed live and great to watch. Cost heaps to do, like $11,000 per brumby. They got 54 of the 80 out. My family used to go bushwalking along the Coxs River and in the Megalong Valley when I was a kid, and my eldest sister lives in Blackheath nearby.

Oh yum. Munching on some fresh, home ground light rye sourdough bread from the Tatong Markets. I’m usually too late for much other than his white loaf, but it was a bit slow this morning due to rain. This is just divine! The fellow grinds the flour Thursday, proves the bread Friday and bakes and sells Saturday so you can’t get any fresher or better. Doesn’t need anything but oil or butter on it, it is so tasty.

So, the washing machine dies. Throws hands up in the air, exasperated. It’s humming like it’s working but not agitating.. gears? drive belt? do they even have drive belts now? Hubby can drag the load out into the trough and wash it. And take the machine apart. I’ll have to fix this one. Big machine, Simpson top loader 9.5 kg, can’t be that bloody hard..

Could be belts, could be clutch, could be gears or often more likely, could be the control switch/es/computer. What cycle was it in when it st there humming?

It clearly turned the water off when it filled then. Have you tried resetting the switch to start? Have you tried a different wash cycle?

Yes tried everything. Under normal use it makes a pulsing sound, ie agitator this way and return, gear/ drive working but the agitator itself physically not turning.

Got the big water urn inside now so I can wash a few dishes that can’t go into the dishwasher.. one thing at a time! lol.

Oh and cooks, don’t buy aldi cream, it doesn’t whip up. 3 litres of cream in the bin.

Good thing I can’t drink alcohol or I’d be sitting on the floor in a corner sloshed

Let me do the drinking and thinking. You provide the data. First though, I’ve got to go to Bunnings to get bits to fix the shower doors and to the bottle shop for something to drink.

Scratch going to Bunnings. I hand made the parts on the bathroom sink from bits of scrap and antique tools.

If the motor is spinning and the agitato isn’t agitating, again it could be a switching problem or further down the line such as slipping belt or damaged clutch etc. One always actually needs to know what one is looking at. All machines differ slightly.

The electronics work, goes onto all the different cycles with a digital screen of wash cycle length etc. If the circuit, computor thingy wasn’t working, the water wouldn’t have filled, right? I’m sure it’s a clutch prob then. It is 10 years old and gets heavy duty use. A king size wool doona is not a problem for this machine. A few months back we had to buy a special long socket handle to take the agitator out to get some screws out LeLe left in his overalls pocket.

Those screws or indeed the handiwork of he wh o last fixed it, could be the root cause and the problem. Ie; the agitator may not have been tightened up well enough. It could simply be loose.

By the same token, it could be that the screws caused damage by causing the belt tu slip and burn a bit, if indeed it uses a belt. Good thing I know how to make parts as Bunnings didn’t have them anyway. QStill managed to pay three times as much for a packet of plastic toilet seat fasteners $5.90 which cntained three types thouh I only really needed one wing nut. Compensated for jt all by getting beer on special, saved $12.

Good saving.
The machine still spins and drains..rules out the gearbox? obviously the pump is still good.

I’ve washed the load in the trough then into the machine for a spin, then back into the trough to rinse, then back into the machine to spin dry. What a drag. But at least I don’t have to hand wring the things and have to hang them out sopping wet.

Some are obsessive about cleaning every nook and crany though nothing is actually designed and built for that, apart from your wristwatch, if you paid good money for one that was meant to be repaired.

Some people I’ve met have never needed to change a screen on a window or door because they always applied best practice to handling said door or window. It really does come down to this, without needing to be compulsed by obsessiveness.
I’ve had people tell me that car doors are designed to be closed not slammed and it often appears obsessive to me when the door may easily be slammed by the wind

Good morning Gardeners. Went for my bike ride around town, nothing new. Tilly’s house still doesn’t have the new people in it. Another place that has reputedly been sold doesn’t yet have a SOLD sticker on the sign. I didn’t get chased by any dogs. There was virtually no traffic at 6.30am.

Then walked the dogs through the park. The Lady Sybil, with her heart murmur cannot do long walks, and Babuschka is an Old Lady and limps, so can’t do long walks. The Pug just has to put up with it and anyway his legs are so short it’s like a long walk to him.

Weeded out a couple of beds (very easy weeding this lot) and found some selfseeded dill. Moved some of that to where I plan to put some Brussels sprouts soon. Supposed to be a good companion. Just deciding whether to plant out some tomatoes or do some more weeding. I also need to dig some bearded iris corms out and pot them for my sister in law while I know which ones have which flowers.

Later I plan to make a strawberry flan. The Portland strawberries are back in season and Mr buffy bought a large quantity on Wednesday. We’ve eaten some but the others need to be ‘saved’.

Good reading there, Buffy…an outing is an outing is an outing, when you’re a dog…

Anyway, though I’m satisfied that I can or have fixed all or most of the problems the shower doors needed and the rest is in the reassembly, I do still have to meticulously clean the lot or it is all never going to work or indeed look like I’ve done anything at all.

Then hydrate well afterwards. Find ways of replaing skin oils if you have any reason to believe that washing remowves them too drastically.

Harsh chemicals shouldn’t be used on any skin.
You need to realise that your skin is more sensitive to pretty much anything that you may consider putting on a chook.

I acquired a iPad (iThink) for work, and sod me it is a pain the rear. My work “app” is a navigation of tiny iCons and iHate the ruddy thing. iAlso acquired some time ago a large iMac for viewing my photography at home and iDownloaded the work app there. On the massive screen, the work is so much easier.

Hope you described the symptoms as you described them to me when I led you with questions and provided him with the model number as shown in the link I added. As this can make the job get done more quickly and cost you less.

Hello Gardeners. Four degrees at sunup this morning, but warmer now. Quite Sunny in fact. I’ve been for a walk. Well, a couple of walks, easier to walk The Pug separately and then the poorly girl with the old girl, as they can’t go so far or fast. And been to the cafe for coffee. Coffee was good. Now to weed, divide spring onions, mulch, weed, weed, mulch, weed…..and I acquired some more white netting for the berries so I will need to put up the framework and do the draping later today too. Loganberries now forming…yum in anticipation.

Hi PM. I hear a lot of people saying that they are on their iThingy and have to wait until they are on a real computer before they can do such and such, so they really don’t seem good for much. Although they seem to provide great entertainment for the grandkids so may they have one redeeming factor.

Update. It was the clutch, but also the gearbox is worn, seals and it’s an bits, big pile of oil on the floor. Near $500 to fix. It’s now going to the scrap metal place. Repair bloke also said no washing king size doonas in it! Just because they say they can take that, doesn’t mean they can for long. Now that makes sense.

New same machine but updated model sourced at a scratch n dent place, $600. No box, but still bolted to the wood pallet. I told that bloke don’t let it out your sight, it’s mine, lol. Hubbys gone to pick it up. Monies will be repaid to daughter who loaned it to us over two paydays.

Arvo!
Hot water by tomorrow, woohoo! I’m dirty enough for a long shower now. I’ve planted out more veges, climbing things, beans and cucs, rambler things, pumpkin and cantaloupe.

The hws will be delivered here soon and sat next to the old one until the plumber comes to switch them over tomorrow. That space down the side we call ‘the black hole’ is my pot and wire mesh rolls storage area too.
We’ve pulled everything out in preparation so the plumber has more room to work in. I have to admit to a pot hoarding problem. I’m going to clean them up and give 99% away. I did find a hanging pot I was looking for though. Yay. It was a set of six matching pots but after the first year I could only find five. That satiates my ocd, ‘must match the pots up’ heh heh. There’s cherry tomatoes in the others, all lined up and looking good.

It’ll be a jungle of food this summer :D

The bees in the cow hive didn’t settle and have swarmed off. A few lessons learnt and will do it differently next time. We cleaned out the hive, a few dead ones, and re arranged the top bars, plugged the entry on the front side and opened the entry on the rear, so they come out and go up into/ around the almond tree, instead of straight across the walkway.

I also added a thin 3 cm long bit of the wax sheet to three top bars to help get the next lot settled. Now to find another swarm..have several people keeping an eye and ear out ready to grab one for me.

The council were out yesty, two women, and were very happy with the changes I’d made to the hive placement, and to the chooks run. The older one was so rapt in my garden in fact that she wanted a tour, to which I obliged. She was agog at the amount I grow.

I know who complained about my chooks attracting rats too, because the silly bugger told me himself! I could have blown a fuse when he said there’s rats in his garden because of my chooks!
I had to go inside for a cold drink. I wanted to tell him that in his home country chicken keeping is banned outright but has always has had a huge rat problem. In fact it has one of the largest rat populations of all the big cities in the world. But there’s no chickens kept. I’ll go round and talk to him later, when I’m calm.

It’s all these “apps”…are they really necessary to our quality of life…? I’ve been researching computerised accounting / cash book systems as part of a course I’m doing…and wonder that the mantra that faster processing is necessarily better…I look around sometimes and wonder where socialising, the simple day-to-day stuff that knitted various groups together, has gone…

looks like a decanter top of some type and whiskey hip flask.

More likely Chinese medicine ie: opium.

Been thinking about this, do you think it might be a laudunum (F7) bottle?

I think my pencil is over a mm wide at the tip…I am planning to “rip” a piece of wood to make corner thingys for a nesting box I’m making…this ripped wood goes in the corners and the other pieces of wood, slats really, are screwed into it…I suppose the mm don’t matter for this piece of work but I’ve noticed where the measurements are close to exact, the finished product is going to last better…

Good morning Gardeners.

I may have started the creation of a monster….I’ve just planted out 29 assorted tomato seedlings. In my secondary garden. These are the ‘leftovers”….

Oh well, it’s been a good year for the roses, so it may well be a good year for the tomatoes. Except these ones here will get a bucket of water now and then they are pretty much on their own apart from the occasional watering when I happen to be here. (Casterton at the moment, where we got a grand 5mm rain yesterday, if we were lucky)

Took him/her/it to the vet this morning, I don’t think it was gonna pass muster…the vet thinks the wing is too far gone…

I think it must have been the only nestling, the mother was back with food this morning and both the parents (they didn’t leave until after dark almost, yesterday) have been checking out the Maternity Ward, hoping bub will come out I suppose.

Big drama here early arvo. Neighbours house caught fire. Smoke billowing out the roof and both I and the neighbour on the other side knew that elderly Irene was asleep inside. Blokes stopped and kicked the door in and neighbour and her hubby got in and got Irene out and grabbed her cat and budgie cage. Lots of people stopped to help and ringing the fire brigade. There were police fireys ambos and news crew blocking the street with every flashing vehicle in vic, I reckon. No lives lost but the house is severely damaged. Half the roof had to be smashed in. Her husband was out and returned home, seeing all the flashing lights thought it was my place.

Now insurance mob are there with a truck and tarps. They have to wait for the mopping up to finish and fireys check that the fire is out completely. Neighbours have a son to stay with for the time being. Apparently the fire started in the range hood.

There was this stranger woman with my garden hose training it onto the burning roof. I’d moved our cars out as it looked like their kitchen window might blow out. The kitchen window is only about 2 metres from where we park our cars. I told the woman the hose water is doing nothing and to go back out onto the street as she was too close to the window. The window didn’t blow out thank goodness, but she ignored me, so I turned off the hose and refused to put it back on. You could see black smoke filling the house through the windows and flames inside. Fireys made her go out.

Some people just don’t understand fire (re idiot woman), do they? They just don’t. So pleased they got Iris and all her pets out, easier if the animals don’t die. Was there any structural damage, Happy Potter. A profound loss for Iris and her husband. Marvellous how folk got together and got all the living things out.

I think the idiot woman may have been in shock, Happy Potter? Wanted to do something but wasn’t thinking clearly.

Lots of damage, inside pretty much wrecked by fire or water damage. That silly woman was just panicking. I guess she did want to do something to help but didn’t understand the danger. All you can do is get out of the way of those who came to do their job. She ended up getting bellowed at by a fireman to get away.

I was out checking my hens late and heard voices over the fence, shone my candling torch over and asked who’s that? . The couples son and his mate were checking the house. I gave them a fright, lol, but they were glad I’d checked.

During the chaos I hung out in my backyard ready to crate the hens and escape with them and Max. Max was inside as he was going off the deep end at people on next doors roof, all the noise and smoke.

No doubt the investigators and authorities will suss out this fire. The husband is sometimes an abusive man and more than once my hubby jumped the fence to warn him off, yelling at him ‘who do you think you are scaring her’ (his wife) raising a fist at her.. they were pretty much estranged. She is a long suffering sort. We have always kept an eye on her, same with other neighbours.

My observation is that ladies who are abused in their relationships can have trouble concentrating…they lose track of things…like stuff cooking under the grill, turning the oven off…leaving a tap running in a tub…getting things mixed up…Someone like that worked for us, as a matter of fact, everyone thought the partner was “a lovely guy” but I saw him with her a few times and he had the attitude of “you’ve done it again, you are so dumb” with all the non-verbal body language (not violent tho’, but we do know it doesn’t have to be physically violent)…he has passed on now so I won’t say anything more about him but I noticed because it flowed on to the work she did for us…she was in such a “state” all the time, she had to write everything down. I had been to boarding school with her so I knew it wasn’t normal. She was fantastic on the phone with the clients, though, and marvellous with P’s diary (organising his work schedule).

Just remembering something from when a friend has a house fire. A lot of their stuff was written off by the insurance company but they were able to rescue a lot of it – just got to be quick before it gets chucked in the skip by the workers cleaning up. So they got their replacement money and were able to keep the items as well. They had an extensive library that was declared smoke & water damaged but a lot of the books just needed a wipe down. Something for your neighbours to consider HP. On the other hand some items they wanted replaced like kitchen cupboard doors only got a new coat of paint which meant they weren’t as good as before.

Hello Holidayers. Our Ephemeral Girl, Lady Sybil, has left us. She stopped eating about 3 or 4 days ago and slipped into sleeping most of the time. And of course, skinny to start with, she got worse. The vet commended Mr buffy on giving her a couple of months of good life with our pack, but agreed that she was too worn out to continue now. A short acquaintance with a lovely soul. Such a shame….she was 16 months old.

Sonny Jim was up yesterday, fixing my taps. Whilst I like to drip water the chookens on a hot day, each rose bush overnight, the paw paws ditto, it makes my teeth ache to see water dripping down the sink and after the yard taps are turned off.

We bought plastic (poly carbonate?) “taps”, and these will not corrode if dripping is required. The spindles (from the brass taps) are still good but I have to have buckets under the taps now (no hardship) to catch the drips from the taps themselves…am already planning to put potted plants under one at least, with a wire cage to keep the chooks out…coriander anyone? An ideal spot in this hot climate….I seem to have dill out the front, peeking out through the wooden planks I have over the roses roots (to keep them cool and stop the chookens diggin up the dead bodies…vale Gladstone and the little chicken that Tink squashed last night)…

I shall have to have a shower soon and wash my hair, still got red mites crawling around…

The aforementioned farm friend staying with me brought her seed stash for me to ogle over. Oh my gawd, some things made my eyes light up. Red clover is one. I just told her to give me seeds of what she thinks I need, which I don’t know I will need, lol.

Bush tomato (bush raisins), rosella seeds. Also lilac sunflowers, red Marietta marigold, pomegranate, Japanese burdock and red yarrow.

Eggplants – Turkish orange, rosa Bianca, Casper, golden egg, ping tung long and violet of Florence. Pumpkins Aust’ butter and Marina Di Chioggia.

Cucs – Gympie Gold, yellow crystal apple, suyo long and spacemaster.

Bush beans and climbing beans.

And plantain seeds < apparently I need this, but I’m yet to find out what for..

I’m going to have fun playing with and learning about that lot :D

My standard hose is 30m. It reaches across the yard from the tap. Our block is 30m by 60m. Need a long hose. I’m quite good a wrangling it along its length.

The 30m hose I have, does not quite reach the end of the block from the back of the house, this is why I have bought another. Also this hose has some UV resistence…nearly all the hoses at the local Mitre10 have some form of extra UV tolerance…as opposed to the cheepies from woolworths which perish after a few years…

It ended, abruptly. The college lost the contract..for what reason the students weren’t told. We were all gutted as they were terrific people and teachers. Well we thought so.

What happens now is we are waiting for transfers to VU to continue where we left off. That will probably not happen until early next year. In the meantime, all sorts of goodies are being churned out in my oven :)

Good morning Gardeners. We woke to a lovely 10 degrees and light fog, so I did my bike ride around town. Then picked peas, broad beans broccoli and potatoes. Cafe for breakfast. And now I’m sitting here sneezing out the dust from mowing the more dusty bits of our yard and Auntie Annies. I’m dripping with sweat, as the fog has lifted and the sun is now out. Temp in the shade is 18 now, almost exceeding my comfortable working in the sun temp. I’ll go and collect up the broken glass from the long chook run where they are digging over many years of detritus and then let them in there to do some more of their work.

Good morning y’all…terribly exciting day today…cleaning out the refrigerator (mostly just wiping down the shelves and re-organising the goods) and sewing sun-block curtains for the western windows…

Have decided to go with hessian for the sunshade…or have I already told you that?

Also going to look out for a canvas waterbag…

I love fridge cleaning day! They look so spiffy and new after. I could keep it clean and tidy all the time, but kiddly winks are on a special diet, some 30 day challenge or something and have filled the fridge to the brim. Yep I’ll just blame them. Hehe.
At least I’m glad that as KK goes over the diets weekly shopping list, first checks off what they need that I have growing.

4WD suppliers might be your best bet for the waterbag, if they are available at all these days of portable fridges and bottled water.

I need a few quiet days to recover from a busy week and weekend, but have to work this afternoon.

Yes you are right, cleaning out the refrigerator is hugely satisfying after the event…I do hope the diet works for the kiddly winks, must be good if lots of fresh stuff is included…

I never thought of 4WD suppliers, BlueGreen…I think they are still available but from specialist camping stores?

Dance away…seriously I think the energy suppliers have missed the boat with solar energy…just my opinion but I think they would have been better to put in their own solar energy plants and sell the power from that…the home-installed units are cutting power bills for those homes but the energy suppliers are not receiving that income…

I agree, but while there is still lots of coal to be dug up and burned that is probably what they’ll keep investing in.

Home solar systems saves them money. Plus more often than not people install too small systems to cover their bills. The power suppliers keep it rolling in, don’t you worry about that.

Did a bit of gardening etc. yesterday and paying for it today.

I haven’t owned a swimsuit for I can’t remember how long! Not really practical for me to go to the pool regularly as I am out of town.

Arvo everyone. Been MIA again, reminded during a quick chat with Yeehah on Facebook but that it is about time I poked my head in the door to say g’day. My vegie patch is coming along not too badly, although it did suffer a bit while I was on holidays on Qld a couple of weeks ago.

Today I did a spot of bandicooting and got myself a nice feed of spuds, as well as made a loaf of bread.

I have just started my first ever sourdough starter, so it will be interesting to see how it goes. I have made and fed a few ginger beer plants over the years which seems similar, so I am hopeful that I will have success with the sourdough.

I hope you are all well and that your gardens are humming along famously.

Get it checked out if the slightest sign of infection. Are you up to date with your tetanus booster?

A lady on another forum stabbed herself in the hand with some sharp scissors and left it for a few days over the weekend before seeing a doctor. In the meanwhile it kept swelling and she ended out in hospital for a week, 3 operations to try and clean out the infection and is in a cast for 6-8 weeks. Just saying, not worth the risk.

This was good to see this in the stupidmarket today. Now I can choose NOT to buy the perfect produce because that’s what they claim I want, and at a cheaper price too. Bought some perfectly good but unevenly sized carrots and some small pears that are a much better size IMO. Just hope that the farmers are getting a good price too.

Had booster about 4 months after my granddaughter was born. She will be on 15th Dec. How long do they last? Is it 5 or 10 years? I can’t remember. Might be worth a visit to the doc’s (although I was there today :-( )

My blood pressure has started creeping up again…has been really good since the surgry in March, but it has been up during the last couple of visits to my GP so it’s back on the higher dose medication :-(

What BlueGreen said…my bro’s step-son, a sparky, accidentally stabbed himself with one of those fine copper wires they have in …you know…those plastic coated things full of wire that the house electrics run along? Well he ended up in 4 hospitals, local, area-wide, the Stat’e‘s most important regional and finally a Brisbane hospital…not sure if the Last Rites were read over him in Brisbane but the priest was on call… so now if I get something under my fingernail or a prick on my fingers, I keep an eye on it for a few days…

You know, with these tetanus boosters, I forget how many years it used to be, 3? Then 5? Now it’s 10… unless of course you’re in an industry where you’re dealing with animal manures or mud or similar on an almost daily basis…

I’m pretty sure it’s 10 years AnneS, recall being surprised when my former GP told me that…

Bummer about the HBT

A booster every ten years…..unless you injure yourself in a way that may place you at risk. Go get a jab :)
I’m in the dirt all the time and get 3 yearly jabs. But I accidently cut myself a lot in the garden.

My throat’s been cut…they have discontinued the iView message board…so if I have a problem with CC, I have to contact them…they’ve got a FAQ but the message board was far more informative…

Looking like Victoria is changing government.

The Greens have made inroads. And the LibNats have bled votes.

Warming up here already. I don’t think I can do any more gardening today. I’d like to plant out some seedlings – chillis, capsicums and egg plants, but they will just fry. Maybe this evening. Although I think tomorrow is due to be hot also. I could pop some bean seeds in though. They will just sit there until they get watered tonight.

And while I’ve got the link in hand….I’ve nearly set my Christmas window for this year. I don’t do “standard” windows. I’ve done a phoenix of the bush (blackened sticks, red tinsel etc in the year after we had a bushfire), Razzamatazz….all red glittery stuff, Copelia, an Egyptian themed one. And some years my big sheepskin teddy sits in the rocking chair in the window with his friends (my dolls, white and black, my panda, assorted others) with a bottle of port and a glass on a table. He gets gradually more dishevelled as the weeks move on until the bottle and glass are tipped over and he has a decided lean by the actual Christmas time.

This year is meant to be a calm one….and knodding to the various cultures in this country. There is Buddha (he usually lives under the big tree out in the garden – we had to evict his ants), a cast iron owl, a plaster frog in his contemplation pool, and a wooden snake I bought from an aboriginal craftsperson years ago.

No walkies for the Woofs tonight, Puta presented this AM with a hole in her elbow…cost = $165 just for the vet to open her doors…then the tenanus injection, the pain killers and the anti biotics…the wound was syringed with a saline solution and there is a sabstantial “pocket” under the skin below the hole…however as I said to the vet, daughter did not take Manu to vet for 4 days after being savaged by another dog (we don’t know what caused Puta’s hole, vet thinks it’s a bite) and the bill there was in excess of $600…so $255 for today’s effort might be a “stitch in time”, as the saying goes…

Got to have something to get out of bed for or roll over and go back to sleep until the alarm reminds you.

Well this morning I bounded out because Puta disappeared last night and I wanted her back under my watchful eye…$255 for the vet yesterday, a possible bite (big hole)…she just doesn’t want to take tablets, that’s why she ran away…

I do that too. Wake up and it’s still dark. But if I set an alarm I wake up before it, everytime.
