Scotland produces enough wind energy to power all its homes

Scotland is pushing ahead with green energy, with First Minister Alex Salmond claiming that renewables could provide 100 percent of Scotland’s energy by 2025. And last month, Salmond’s push for wind farms appears to have borne fruit – wind power alone generated some 126 percent of the energy needed to power every home in Scotland in what the World Wildlife Foundation (WWF) is calling a “bumper month.” Even solar fared well despite the chilly conditions, with domestic solar PV panels chipping in around a third of the domestic energy bill.

just imagine if we were able to harness the enormous amount of heat that falls on the hottest places in Australia?

if we had lots of clean, cheap electrical power manufacturing would come back to australia

Yes, cheap renewable energy would be a boon for the manufacturing sector

It’s a shame that manufacturing and employment are no good for the economy

what will they get the 100% of power they’ll need when the wind ain’t blowin?

“Of course, it’s not quite that simple. Wind power is inconsistent,
even on the windy Highland plains, and can’t be produced on demand
like gas-fired electricity, so it relies on other forms of electricity generation to fill the gaps”

Wind Farm ‘Folly’ Blamed For £100 Per Year Energy Bill Rise
sunday Express October 15, 2014

HOUSEHOLDERS are facing soaring energy bills and winter power cuts thanks to the “folly” of relying on wind power, experts said last night.

The green crusade of successive governments is set to double electricity bills for households and cost homes £26 billion a year by 2030, it was claimed yesterday.

The cost of renewable energy and carbon taxes will put an extra £983 a year on household bills by then, compared to relying on a mix of nuclear and new gas-fired power stations, three experts told a Lords committee.

They also said the “foolhardy” green policy will do little to cut emissions of the greenhouse gases blamed for global warming.

The Scientific Alliance report highlights warnings by the regulator Ofgem that the margin for electricity production for the 2015-16 winter will be at an all-time low of 2 per cent compared to the pre-privatisation requirement of at least 20 per cent.

It means that in times of high demand, such as during very cold weather, Britain would be at risk of power cuts.

The alliance argues that wind power – which is the main renewable energy source depended on by Government – is unreliable.

One of the experts, Sir Donald Miller, former chairman of Scottish Power, said: “The blind reliance by successive governments on unreliable, intermittent renewable energy has reduced the margin of safety to a critical level.

Our blind reliance on wind power will mean power cuts in winter
Sir Donald Miller
“This has brought the country to a position where power cuts could become a regular feature of cold winters for several years.”

Sir Donald Miller is the former chairman of both the South of Scotland Electricity Board and utility company Scottish Power from 1982-92.
He is a member of Supporters of Nuclear Energy (SONE).

Miller has consistently argued against renewable energy such as wind and for nuclear. He has also appeared as an objector against wind farms.

Most recently he has claimed that the unreliability of wind power could mean an independent Scotland would have to import energy from England – leaving it with the highest household bills in the world. In an interview with Scotland on Sunday in August 2013 Miller ‘described the SNP’s current energy policy on producing 100 per cent of Scotland’s needs from renewables as “disastrous”’.

Giant fans can provide the wind to turn the turbines
