Subject: Update a MacBook5,2

Hi Folks,

Trying to update a forumite’s MacBook5,2.

She wanted me to update her Safari which is currently Safari v5.0.6 as she is getting the message it is no longer supported. Her current OS is Mac OS v10.5.8. I think that is Leopard.

So several questions:

I suspect she needs to update her OS before she can update Safari. Is this true? From what I have read Safari v5.06 is the last one for her OS.

What would be the best way of updating her OS? I am thinking that she needs to update in stages until she gets to the latest OS? How many can I skip?

The Specs are:

Mac OS X
Version 10.5.8
Processor 2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
Memory 2 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM

TM&(c) 1983-2009 Apple Inc.
All Rights Reserved.

Model Name: MacBook
Model Identifier: MacBook5,2
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
Processor Speed: 2 GHz
Number Of Processors: 1
Total Number Of Cores: 2
L2 Cache: 3 MB
Memory: 2 GB
Bus Speed: 1.07 GHz
Boot ROM Version: MB52.0088.B05
SMC Version (system): 1.38f5
Serial Number (system): W8915A364R1
Hardware UUID: 01E9BB34-557B-5FD3-882F-EEB89D11D016
Sudden Motion Sensor:

I haven’t done a Mac in more than a decade so I am out of the loop. Any suggestions or urls greatly appreciated.

Without googling, I’d venture to say that yes the Safari version is no longer supported but that to be able to use a later version, she’ll also have to update past Leopard, as Leopard isn’t supported by newer vsions of Safari or in other words ignore the messages and stiick with what she’s got until it breaks.

Send a letter of complaint

I’d suggest in that letter of complaint that you suggest Apple to have an updater in every new version of an Apple Operating system that can update every past version of Apple Operating systems, to the current version!

I tried the Software Update and it says ‘Software Update doesn’t have any new software for your computer at this time.” I don’t think that there are any updates unless I get into hacks and cracks and I don’t know enough to be able to troubleshoot those.

Ypu can tick the box allright, but sometime the site won’t open or if it does only partially and none of the operations in it will work.

What this actually means is that the operating system has had all the developmental upgrades and has come to the end of its development.

This should amply indicate that n matter what message one receives about how unupdated your Safari is, that there is no way your OS can be updated far enough to run it.

If her only issue is with Safari, then she may find the easiest way o fix it is to download and install another web browser, such as Firefox, Opera, or maybe even Chrome.

It is largely a BS issue anyway. The other browsers may work but it may also be an issue that the latest vsions of those won’t be supported.

Yes, it is. If they want your custom they should not unnecessarily fuck with your head. By law their communications with you should be clear.

They shouldn’t fag on about how your browser won’t be able to see their crap advertisements and they should simply allow you to do business.

It shouldn’t matter. Cancel the error message about this browser isn’t supported and look at the page to see what is missing. Usually nothing is missing.

If you really want I can source later vesions of Safari that have been hacked so that they can be installed on Leopard but it won’t make a lot of difference because Leopard is as old as the hills. I still run Tiger and Safari 3. I have no problems with sites that give error messages.
