Howdy strangers!
I’m looking for the names of two documentaries that I watched on either the ABC or SBS aeons ago…
I can only remember vague details, so this is probably going to be quite hard.
The first showed how the human head develops in utero. The two sides develop independently, and then join up in the middle – which is why we have that weird bit underneath our nose, and above our top lips. This was shown in a nifty 3D time lapse video.
The second was about how infants from a tribe of Hunter-Gatherers (?) were taught to walk much sooner than their Western counterparts. The infants were held underneath their arms, and were bounced by their mothers (or other caregivers), which encouraged them to ‘step’ forward. The ‘primitive reflex’ that causes this phenomenon usually disappears in Western infants, but because the mothers of these infants encouraged the behaviour, it didn’t go away. Because of this, the infants were walking unaided at a far younger age than would usually be expected.
Sorry for neither being much to go from…

So what were the average ages of independent ambulation among the hunter gatherer children? What is the average among “Western” children?

But to help us track it down: what else can you remember about the Hunter gatherers? What continent/country were they in? Do you remember the tribe name? Any other technical terms used? Roughly what year did you see it? What was the nationality of the presenter? etc.

I think they were African. I could be wrong though.
I can’t remember much more, I’m afraid.
Hmm… come to think of it, I think they also made up some sort of herbal stuff to put on the infants?

Was it a one off or part of a documentary series?

INNATE TALENTS: REALITY OR MYTH?
“It is important to keep in mind that early ability is not evidence of talent unless it emerges in the absence of special opportunities to learn. For example, it was once thought that the ability of infants in certain parts of Africa to sit and walk appreciably earlier than European children must have a genetic basis, but Super (1976) showed that this inference was wrong. Studying infants in a Kenyan tribe, he confirmed that they did indeed display motor capacities such as walking, standing and sitting without support a month or so earlier than children in other continents, but he also discovered that the only skills these infants acquired earlier than others were those that their mothers deliberately taught them. “

I found this which appears to be a passage out of a book, that pretty much describes what I remember seeing… but I’m no closer to finding the documentary.
I think it was five or so years ago that I saw it.

I’m on to it FC.
I started a base search on one of those free online search engines.
“two documentaries” yielded 62,400,000 results in (0.25 seconds) so they are out there alright.
Now to just narrow it down.

Haha… funnily, something similar happened to me. I had these vague memories of watching part of a cartoon when I was a kid (early 90s), and eventually decided that I must have just imagined it… until I stumbled across it earlier this year. :D

I’m taking my baby to Baby Aqua at the age of 3 months. The class encourages babies to move in ways they can’t do on land and they reckon that babies who do aqua classes walk sooner than those who don’t. Yet to see actual research on this though. The hypothesis is that babies are more comfortable in water and it’s easier to make walking-type movements in water than it is on land…
But the real reason I’m taking the kid is because I still have membership there that is currently being unused (I can’t see the point in paying $120 for new swimmers which I’ll only use for a month).

I’ve heard that theory before. The vids I’ve seen of babes attending such classes look like a great deal of fun… and the little ones do seem to enjoy it a great deal. :)
