Subject: Brandis won't show you his metadata because it's private

And the internet explodes due to irony overload..

According to Mr Brandis’ chief of staff, the decision to entirely censor the bill was due to it containing “personal information about a number of individuals’ telephone numbers”, as well as the time and origin of calls, reports technology publication ZDNet.

“Disclosure of the personal information in the document is unreasonable,” Mr Brandis’ chief of staff Paul O’Sullivan said, adding that who the minister called was not relevant.

Metadata is just a record of the number you have called and how long you have spoken, it’s not a record of what you spoke about..

hang on a sec…

Easy to categorise Libs as having a “born to rule” attitude but this mob really seem to not give half a crap what the voters, their employers, think.

totally independent politics would get us nowhere… and in any case, our electoral system devolves to a two-party basis as a matter of course (it’s unavoidable)

plenty of modern democracies don’t involve two parties….

most of them are fairly non functional… still.. so is ours lately.

over time our preferential voting system tends towards a “two party” state, it’s unavoidable

(shrugs) there’s no preferential voting in the US and they are even more of a two party state than Australia is.

With regard to dysfunctionality of many-party systems, there are counterexamples. Italy is always a shitfight, but Germany works reasonably well with broad coalitions.

I’ll show you mine if you show me yours

so If I declare my metadata private, you cannot see it

It’s not the preferential voting (which actually encourages small parties, relative to first-past-the-post) it’s the single member electorates. Proportional systems tend to produce more power-sharing governments; multi-member electorates like Tas are in-between.
