Subject: Bob From Black Rock
Bob from Black Rock phoned me up and asked me to give his regards to the forum.
He hasn’t been on the forum for quite a while, mostly because he doesn’t have a computer. His Laptop died a couple of months ago and he hasn’t yet got a replacement.
He’s been having a lot of problems, including health, girl problems, finances and mental health problems. You probably know that he recovered from prostate cancer years ago, but he still has minor urinary problems that affect his sleeping patterns. He claims that he couldn’t have a dog because he wouldn’t even have the money to feed it, money is the main reason he hasn’t replaced his laptop. A couple of months ago he took out a court order to stop his former girlfriend from pestering him. He claims he has memory problems. And subclinical depression. In short, he’s a bit of a mess.
Bob’s been a big help to me in my work on rockets. He lined up someone to machine a rocket motor for me.

That’s a shame. I know he’s elderly, but not ancient. All the best wishes Bob.

so, how much would a puta cost for Bob, and can we, as a forum, afford it?

Where? If so I’ll buy it for him. Checking MSY catalog There’s an MSY store withing walking distance of my home, and Tech Talk used to like them. What about these?
HP 15-R040TU $300
ACER Aspire E5-511-24RH $329

Good to hear Bob’s alive & kicking, even if not exactly thriving :)
A new laptop for him sounds a worthy Xmas gift idea. If someone who knows about laptops could take charge of choosing and buying it (I’ve only ever owned desktops), I’m sure we’d get enough donations. Alternatively we could donate the money directly to Bob if he’s able to get one himself. I’ll throw in $50.

Internet could cost Bob much more (per year) than computer. What would be his cheapest option?

Yeah, getting the computer is less than half the problem. One year’s internet would be more than twice the cost of a computer for Bob.

I remember meeting Bob in person about five years ago.
He’s such a lovely human being.
Although money’s a bit tight for us at the moment, I’m sure that we would be able to spare $50 or so to go towards buying him a new laptop, or one of those internet dongley things.
Molly, do you still have either SB’s or my contact number?

Get him a laptop and he can use it at macdonalds. Or steal his neighbours…

Yes I got rid of an old misbehaving desk top for a laptop. It was cheaper, way better than the desk top (though that is more a function of my belated updating) and I envisaged using it in hospital or at least, easy to take to a computer shop if I had problems. With a full size monitor and keyboard there is no difference and it is a much smaller visual footprint.

I have an excellent desktop machine and a fully working backup desktop, so my laptop purchase will just be an indulgence :)
