This pond looks like a beautiful, frozen topographical map, and science lovers around the internet are scratching their heads trying to work out why.

Last week, Reddit user odstane posted stunning photos of a frozen pond that had ice rings spreading out from semi-submerged rocks.

The images, naturally, went viral, but now the search is on to find a cause for the beautiful, icy phenomenon.

It might have something to do with the rock effecting the waters temperature as it cools down to become frozen

Is the water beneath the ice in motion? It looks like the crystals have used the rocks as nucleus to form around because the water is not still.

Interesting, I wonder what the depth of the ice is, and would the temp vary with depth?

Yes. That’s my guess too. The surface of the lake freezes overnight but during the day, the ice closest to the rock melts. Coming into winter, every day is colder than the previous one, so the extent of the melted ice is less. The lines form like a tree’s rings, showing the number of days and nights it took for this scene to develop. I also guess that this is a rare sight as the lines/distances between the lines are quite evenly spaced, indicating that the temperature at this particular location dropped at an even rate over the course of a number of days and nights.

I guess the rock heats up during the day collecting sunlight

releases the heat over night
