Envy of scientists and ignorance of their work is behind the muted reaction to the slashing of one in five jobs at the CSIRO.

Bloody CSIRO. What have they ever done for us? Besides inventing Wi-Fi and Aeroguard and gene shears? Well? Nothing, that’s what. Just polymer banknotes, and the microwave landing system at pretty much every airport in the world. Oh, and distance measuring technology for all the aircraft in flight on approach to those airports. All bloody useless really. Just like that damnable atomic absorption spectroscopy all the drug companies use to develop their stupid life-giving medicines.
Who do these clowns think they are, lounging around in their underpants and lab coats, expecting the poor old taxpayer to mop their enormous throbbing brows and carefully drop peeled grapes into their mouths?
I mean it’s not like the CSIRO invented anything normal people would use is it? No, those shiftless, greedy scientists are all about pie in the sky projects like the Relenza flu drug, and Softly detergent and the permanent pleat in your best strides. Who the hell needs any of that? It’s useless. All of it. But not as useless as the Parkes Radio Telescope or the rabbit calicivirus. That’s right. When the lazy, wasteful CSIRO isn’t absently stargazing, it murders rabbits. They deserve to have their funding slashed just for that.

It’s a good thing this government knows what’s good for us. While you were distracted by the 5 per cent cut to the ABC this week, Tony Abbott pressed home his attack on wasteful and confusing science by slashing one in five jobs at the CSIRO. That’ll teach those eggheads to waste money on inconvenient climate change research that could have been spent building more roads and funding bigger coalmines which, I don’t need to point out, have a solid, proven track record of actually affecting the world’s climate, unlike those useless buggers sitting around their good-for-nothing space telescope patting themselves on the back for killing rabbits and introducing foreign dung beetles into the country. Not just one or two, either. But 23 different species, all coming in here, eating our poop. The bludgers.
Yeah, you thought we’d forgotten about that, didn’t you, you beetle-smuggling bastards. If it wasn’t for you poop nerds our national paddocks would still be full of fresh cowpats and all you soon to be idle pointy-heads would have have some useful work to do for a change, with a shovel and a bit of elbow grease. Turns out you were too smart for you own good, didn’t it?
Not like the government which just cut your funding.
***
As much damage as Abbott has done to the ABC, it’s possible the harm he has done himself is much worse. The shameful joy of watching him twist in the gibbet has been almost too painfully exquisite to bear; all of the violent contortions, the “verbal gymnastics” as his own backbench very kindly put it, the PM croaking “efficiency dividend, it’s an efficiency dividend” while the basest, most common sort of village folk jeered and laughed and poked him with sharp, pointed tweets and humorous YouTube videos. What’s not to love?
It would all be such jolly good fun if it weren’t for the hundreds of decent men and women soon to be sitting at home looking at the mortgage and rent they can’t pay, the school fees which have become impossible, the futures squeezed off by a mean and deceitful claque of born-to-rule Tories who think nothing of debauching the Treasury for their own grotesque entitlements. It would all be a spiffing wheeze if the future could not be read in the entrails and offal that passes for most of the programming at Foxtel.
Did Abbott lie when he promised, the night before the election that there would be “no cuts to education, no cuts to health, no change to pensions, no change to the GST and no cuts to the ABC or SBS”? Just before he massively cut funding and raised the costs of health and education? And cut funding to the ABC and SBS? And fundamentally changed the pension system, making it likely that most people without a generous parliamentary super scheme will just have to work until they drop?
Look, in one sense, maybe not. Maybe, at that moment, he genuinely thought none of it would be necessary. For once he may just have spoken his tiny mind. Maybe he truly believed that his conservative regime would break the modern mould and resist the siren song of ideology and culture war. Perhaps Abbott honestly held this truth to be self-evident; that there was simply no way Rupert Murdoch and his slavering horde would expect that having fought so hard for an Abbott win, they could then gorge themselves on the spoils of victory. After all, what would Lord Ruprecht gain from a starved and crippled public broadcaster besides one less competitor to his multibillion-dollar broadcast empire? An empire whose tax refund could pay for the cuts to the ABC and SBS many times over.
That could all be true. Or, maybe having lied his way through the long, mad weeks of an election campaign, he just couldn’t help himself. Who can say?
If there is one upside to this for Abbott, it can only be that as wrong and twisted and dishonest as he looks when you stare at that bald broken promise – no, that series of broken promises – on election eve, poor Malcolm Turnbull looks even worse. He made no promises. He just had to break them.

Getting rid of the CSIRO is a structural thing really , labor and the liberals would have done the same thing whether it means people leaving of their own volition after being hounded out or directly being sacked
In wookiemeister economic theory the purpose of getting rid of the CSIRO is simple, it means all those dollars that could be spent at the CSIRO goes to private industry along with all the subsidies , industrial and employment and hence political power.
Normally what you do is put someone in that will run an existing organisation into the dirt by whatever means, you drive people out, sack them, destroy existing programmes that could rival private industry, gum the works up by creating more paperwork and hence more managers until nothing is workable. When you see businesses and organisations doing this a fifth column is at work. The new ASIO building is made from glass and has a chequered building history, after finally finishing the thing the plans of the building were transferred to china. When you add all these things up you conclude a fifth column is active.
Another sign is that key staff are being sacked or hounded out, these are the people that keep the thing alive, once you’ve got of key staff the the organisation is ready for a takeover.
When new managers are appointed they instinctively sacked and push out everyone below them apart from1/2 willing helpers – so it’s only necessary to employ new managers to do your dirty work for you. The agent working within will normally be in some high ranking position , will have created new positions and will have employed snakey people into those positions – attention is drawn to them – not you.
Once the rot has started there’s not much you can do but sack the entire management team and hope its been enough.

I wouldn’t worry about it there’s nothing you can do , labor will run it into the dirt as fast as the liberals in their own peculiar way so you’ll only causing yourself wasted time thinking about it.

“As much damage as Abbott has done to the ABC”
5% cut,,,over 3 years
Two examples illustrate the ABC’s surreal approach to other people’s money. Example one: the ABC enterprise agreement, 2013-16, which covers an 8 per cent annual growth of wages and perks, including superannuation contributions of 17-20 per cent, more than double the rate of the private sector. The employment contract guarantees minimum 2.5-2.6 per cent pay rises every year. If you work Saturdays, you are paid time-and-a-half, Sundays is double time and public holidays double time-and-a-half. Then there are various allowances, for meals or television clothing, or if you live in an “isolated locality” — like Darwin. If you work in Kununurra you get an extra seven days annual leave.
Maternity leave is 14 weeks, adoption leave is six weeks and supporting partners’ leave is two weeks. You get paid leave to move house or for “special religious ceremonial or cultural obligations”.
There is study leave of up to five hours a week. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander employees get a day’s paid leave each year to participate in NAIDOC Week.
All this and salaries which now outstrip their equivalents in the private sector.
Example two: in 2006, when Mark Scott was hired as ABC managing director, the 2005-06 annual report shows the salary to be about $430,000, including perks, although a rival contender for the job remembers the base salary offered at the time was more like $300,000.
Early in Scott’s reign, rumours were printed that he was in line for the BBC’s top job. Afraid of losing him, the board, then chaired by banker Maurice Newman, decided to give him a lavish pay rise of more than $200,000. They did this by reclassifying his position, making it one of the highest paid public service jobs in the country.
The 2013-14 annual report shows Scott’s salary now to be $805,392.

Just so that can say you learnt something today.
Bully for you!
1. an expression that praises someone or someone’s courage. (Dated, but still heard.) The audience shouted, “Bravo! Bully for you!” Bob: I quit my job today. Sally: Bully for you! Now what are you going to do? Bob: Well, I need a little loan to tide me over.
2. a sarcastic phrase belittling someone’s statement or accomplishment. Bob: I managed to save three dollars last week. Bill: Well, bully for you! Mary: I won a certificate good for a free meal! Sally: Bully for you!

Bully for you! (informal)
something that you say when you do not think what someone has done deserves praise or admiration, although they think it does ‘I cleaned the whole house yesterday.’ ‘Bully for you!’

http://www.phrases.org.uk/bulletin_board/29/messages/114.html
Bully for you is a term indicating praise, sometimes with a hint of sarcasm but often not. At first sight it seems an odd use of “bully” until one realises that the word had a 16th century meaning of fine fellow, sweetheart which probably came from the middle Dutch Boele = Lover
James Briggs is absolutely correct. Bully as an adjective is used for “Excellent, first-rate,” according to the
MWOD (Merriam-Webster’s Online Dictionary), and the example they give is, naturally, “bully for you.” It’s the most frequently heard phrase containing the word as an adjective except possibly “bully pulpit,” which uses the other meaning of bully, but as a noun used as an adjective (or so most people probably interpret it). I think most people probably associate the use of bully as an adjective with the era of Theodore Roosevelt; and the phrase “bully pulpit” is explicitly associated with him.

MARGARET SIMONS WRITES:
Thanks to the dominance of News Limited and its gimlet-eyed boyo editors, the print media in Australia skews to the right: old fashioned, blokey, economically libertarian but socially conservative and mostly anti-intellectual.
LOL
People prefer reading Murdocks papers because they are balanced.
Sure, there are conservative journos employed by Murdoch’s Australian newspapers.
But unlike the ABC, who employ no conservatives to head their radio or television news & current affairs shows, Murdoch employs plenty of lefty journos.

If you find that you agree with most of what is published in the Daily Telegraph then you’re certainly not middle of the road. Just like the Fairfax press has a liberal bias, the Murdoch press has a conservative bias.

LOL, see, this is the mentality I speak of.
The ABC is coping a 5% cut Over three years.
They will still receive over a Billion dollar tax payer funding every year.

just like any other government body, there’s a hell of a lot waste & opulance at the ABC & more funding decreases are needed.
x-Radio National boss says sections of ABC ‘wasteful and unaccountable’ as Ultimo HQ put ‘in lockdown’ ahead of cuts announcement.
Former Radio National manager Louise Evans has lashed out at the culture inside the ABC station and said it demonstrated why there need to be cuts to the public broadcaster.
In an editorial in today’s Fairfax newspapers Evans, who lasted just six months as manager of the station amid rumours of tensions with senior producers and group program director for ABC Radio Michael Mason.
“I was shocked by the culture, waste, duplication and lax work place practices exercised in some pockets of Radio National,” wrote Evans. “I was even more shocked by the failure of the executive to want to do anything about it.”

looks like an axe to grind.
Radio National manager Louise Evans moves to News Radio after just 6 months in role
The ABC’s Radio National is to look for a new boss after its manager Louise Evans “decided she does not wish to continue” after just six months in the role.
Evans, a former managing editor of The Australian, was appointed to the role in April however, radio boss Kate Dundas yesterday informed staff at the ABC that Evans had been asked “to work with NewsRadio for a period to assist Manager NewsRadio Helen Thomas to deliver one of the network’s key strategic priorities.”
Sources have told Mumbrella there was tension between the former managing editor of The Australian and group program director for ABC Radio Michael Mason.
In an email to staff, the ABC’s director of Radio Kate Dundas praised Evans, saying she had achieved much in a relatively short period of time but felt it was time to leave. “I am writing to let you know that Louise Evans has decided she does not wish to continue in the Manager role at Radio National.” Dundas said on Tuesday.
“While Louise has emphasised to me how much she has enjoyed her time with RN to date, the Manager’s role has not turned out to be one she wants to continue with over time. As such we both think it’s best for Louise to step aside now.”
ABC radio staff had been concerned the Evans appointment signalled more cuts at Radio National, which underwent a restructure last year.
The media industry was surprised by the appointment at the time given Evans had experience in print journalism rather than in radio and commercial media rather than public broadcasting.
When she appointed Evans, Dundas said she was an outstanding media professional who brought both senior editorial and leadership skills to the job.
“At The Australian she was instrumental in successfully leading staff, particularly through change processes as the organisation grappled with industry shifts.”
Michael Mason will act in the role until a new manager can be appointed.
