Subject: Budget tablet

I’ve just been browsing for a basic tablet and found iPad Mini and ASUS Nexus 7.

I just want for internet browsing, ABC news streaming, iView etc while travelling.

Budget pricing is desired < $300 if possible. Can these use Skype and send receive email ?

Any other options in this market segment ?

What else can these things do ?

Thanks

Aldi periodically have tablets out with their own brand, they’re surprisingly good.

I’m looking at the Nexus 7 for $230 on ebay. It has an internal GPS that doesn’t need a network or wifi connection.

Yes to both. Email is dead easy to set up and you’ll need to download the Skype app (although I think some tablets have it pre-installed)

I still use a gen 1 2012 model Nexus 7 and comes in very handy. I got a 32gb wifi model for $129 just before the 2013 model came out and it has been great. Only issue is that the sound level out of the heatset port is a bit poor with 16 ohm ear buds.

One word of note: TRIM feature is not enabled by default on the 2012 even when the Android ROM is updated. They grind to a halt to the point they get unusable. A hard reset does not fix them. There is a little app on the Google play store that does a TRIM defrag and then enables TRIM and they run well after that.

So If you are looking for a second hand unit and it is running slow and dodgy, it is actually easy to fix them up like new.

Rumpole, BTW, how’s the share trading going? I thought I recognized this post elsewhere ;)

I thought this thread might be about the stone plaques that Hockey brought down from the mount.

Hey stan101

I’m not a frequent share trader, I just post in General Chat of ASF.

I keep my head down in case they throw me out for not being “one of them”.

:)

I’ve virtually decided on the Nexus 7. Only 16GB but Quad core processor and very good screen. Lack of external expansion is a bit of a worry, but I don’t think I’ll be using it all that much.

$299 at DSE.

Nah, that would be titled Budget Suppository of Wisdom.

I don’t log in there anymore. I had Joe cancel my account. I used to day trade and dividend strip and would buy some very good data from a member there. To be honest I was making a nice earn but it got so damn mind numbingly tedious reading charts, announcements and reports. And the mail and paperwork it generated was astronomical! 20 to 30 letters arriving a day sometimes.

It was good to see my word of the day thread is still alive :) and there are a few old names I recall but I can’t see me logging back in there. I just read up on a few long term shares and speccies I here about.

Is that for the 3rd gen unit?

You can’t go wrong with them. They are lean running units.
