the idea is an all year round indoor ski resort
essentially you build a mountain in a large box
the mountain is hollow to allow access
the roof has artificial stars with lines between them to show the constellations
it would run 24 hours a day , ice skating would occur with all the other types of winter sports would happen there too.
the mountain could be hundreds of meters high
it would be called “snow mountain “
you ‘d have special deals to snow mountain.
you could stay inside the enclosure, hobbit type houses could be built- the hollow structure would allow thousands of houses to be built into the mountain.
the mountain would be powered by the sun
running 24 hours a day means you could go there any time
there would be no ski lifts as we know them , instead large industrial elevators will take people to the top and other locations on the mountain
there would be lots of elevators so no one would ever wait more than a minute before taken to the top

you could build it here
at least it would create employment for thousands of people and hundreds of thousands of foreign visitors
100 a day including ski hire and accommodation
if it were built in a regional area it would create much needed and sustainable employment

ski slopes elsewhere might be affected but to be honest they are a scam , the rich can visit these places , working class people can visit ski mountain

There’s something similar in Tokyo as well.
The trouble is, a 600 m high such as this would be a little bit expensive to build, but would still not offer anything like the same experience as skiing in the open on a real mountain.

you could even build apartments inside or part of the outside structure , if you sold. these apartments this would fund the building of the place , people renting the apartments might be mad skiers. once you got home you could have a rest up then go skiing for a few hours , then spend an hour socialising at the local bar inside .

The cost of this thing is an interesting question.
At 600 m it would be taller than the World Trade Centre, with no option to cheat by putting a slender spire on top for the last 200 m or so. It would also be huge in plan area.
My guess would be that 25 billion would not come close to being enough.
On the basis of the ratio of the original estimate for the Sydney Opera House to the final cost, I’ll go for 250 billion.
Only $10,000 each.

I thought of a free fall ride, basically you just jump off the edge of a cliff or very high building, as you fall you intersect with a gently increasing ramp that will eventually being you to a stop. You might have to wear heavy duty chaps or something to stop friction burns to your clothes. It would be rather thrilling yelling Geronimo and taking a running jump and launching off a height for a period of freefall.

Yes but you’re likely to start rolling or somersaulting when you contact it.
the japanese have invented an umbrella that uses wind power to keep the rain off. I wonder if you could slow people down with air.. or have them wear magnet suits and slow them down with increasing magnets along the side of the whatever they are jumping off..

Never mind a snow mountain, just make a giant pyramid about 10 times the size of the Great Pyramid. People can skateboard down the sides of it.
That would be 1390 m high
Just think of the water production potential!
We’d have to hire Zarkov to help with the design. I don’t know if wookie would appreciate the competition.

I suppose you could just strap a parachute to someones back and let them free fall out of a plane for a while until a set time where they then release the parachute and glide gently to the ground..
actually that’s not a bad idea.. Patent pending
patent pending
I’m looking at you all patent pending.

I really think this idea should be modified to include a “space elevator” or a “Slingatron”
people could then parachute from a much higher altitude

Wookie you really shouldn’t post your brilliant ideas on a public forum.

Lots of potential for broken bones there.
Not if the ramp is gentle enough,it would initially be like a wall that moves out to meet you.
you’d end up tumbling one way or the other , even free fall ends in a tumble unless you can correct it, against a wall, unlikely

Ever been on a slide? If the intersection was gentle enough you could slide down in any position you like and adjust ypur position, I am talking a gentle braking.

Can’t see it working. Even if you were skilled enough to get into a secure sliding position, there would be lots of friction & heat.

I reckon it could work if it was a water slide, or if the participants sat in a tub of olive pil immediately before leaping off.

agreed, I mentioned that it would require some sort of chaps. I can see stepping up to the ride, putting on a helmet and a prison type suit being velcroed on. Jump off and as the wall comes closer you can ajust your position just be putting out your hand or foot. The only problem might be that the height required to perform such a gentle braking might be unfeasable.

if you built any serious speed up , you’d be a goner
questacom used to/ has(?) a small slide exactly as you describe but the “free fall “ component
is tiny. after the first second of the fall you’d be moving close to 10ms , any wriggle from the user could spell disaster I think. any bare skin could end up being burnt, especially if its clammy.

You don’t land on the curve you and it meet at an almost imperceptible angle and you can adjust your position as you move closer to the wall. Relative remember.

small distance travelled , fine , large distance travelled at a near vertical angle could be probs

I prefer the very old idea of building a mountain in western Australia to create orographic rainfall to supply fresh water to the centre of Australia. Australia’s mountains are currently in the wrong place.

What height would be needed? Could you get away with a single mountain, or would a mountain range be preferable?

Thinking further along this – at this stage, fanciful – line, does this formation need to be a mountain (range)?
All we need is some way to make onshore breezes rise to a height at which they can no longer carry moisture, which falls out as rain.
So why don’t we use a line of large fans powered by, say, wave-generated electricity, to push the air upwards and create a virtual mountain range?
