‘Penalty rates may prompt Adelaide restaurants to close for New Year’s Eve: hospitality group’ – ABC News

They’d also be booked solid, and charging a holiday surcharge.

Suck it up, restaurateurs – you can’t have all the cake and eat it, too. Let your staff get a bit, too.

It’s the constant battle by business owners to get their employers to work at the shittiest times for no more compensation..

Maybe we should get used to some things not being available 24/7 and recognise that wait staff deserve holidays too

+1

I remember working in the hospitality industry. Shit conditions, shit pay, shit jobs. In 2003 I worked a 12 hour Christmas day and was told afterwards wouldn’t be getting penalty rates. Management couldn’t understand why my productivity decreased and my attitude sucked.

It was a good thing though. It gave me the push I needed to get the hell out and go to uni.

Speaking for myself,

I worked in the hotel industry for many years in my 20’s and the bad pay and odd hours were well and truly recompensed in other ways if one was inclined to partake. I have no regrets and wonder why those in the position today have different feelings. Perhaps hey should be doing something else
