‘Surge in drones as Christmas gifts will show need for greater regulation: peak body’ – ABC News
So, what’s the deal with these things operating over private property?
Is it a form of trespass (especially for the ones with cameras)? Are you allowed to shoot them down?

It’s unlikely that the discharge of firearms on your property, into the air, is legal, unless you live on a cattle station ;)

Lots of cockies shoot birds. Legal or otherwise. Almond growers don’t want to differentiate between a crow, a sulphur crested or a major mitchel. They all eat nuts

Oh, you really wouldn’t need firearms in an urban setting. Actually, i’m not so worried about my own place (small suburban joint, any intrusion likely to be brief and unintentional), although in the unlikely event that one started hovering outside, ‘countermeasures would be deployed’.
If someone is being harassed by one of these devices, where do they stand from a legal viewpoint if they disable it?

And, anyway, noise suppressors for small-calibre firearms are really easy to make.

I’d need to consult my experienced legal team (Brooke) except I would imagine she’d be passed out drunk in a gutter by now.

They’re governed by CASA.
Commercial operators are not permitted to fly with 30m of a property without written permission.
I imagine that the regulations apply for non commercial operations as well.

Quick, easy, effective.
More durable alternatives are not difficult, either.

Well, first you’re going to need a few gallons of petrol, and a lot of packets of powdered laundry detergent…

Yes, you’re probably right.
It’d be one thing to get the pressure vessel constructed, but the delivery system and getting the venturi nozzle just right are probably going to be more effort than they’re worth.

Get one of these chooks. This one has the magpies measure. The other chooks run but this one leaps into the air and tries to pull the magpie down. The magpie is just astonished that the new kid on the block isn’t afraid of a bully.

Wonder if it’s possible to have the frothy stream carry some sort of entangling matter with it – strips of aluminium foil, or twine, or something?

I suppose any high-pressure stream of water might work.
Possibly even one of these, on the end of a garden hose:

Maybe a long fishing rod with a sheet tied on the end of a length of sting. If the drone gets within range whack it with the sheet and hope it tangles up the props.
or perhaps a net

spud gun.
I also used to make soap bullets. Remove the projectile from a .22 bullet and press the moistened bar of soap onto the shell without spilling the contents. Allow to dry, leaves no ballistic evidence.

Depending on how low they fly them, I reckon a standard bird catching net would bring one down. They aren’t all that big. You only really have to knock them about. Over in FFFS in the nature bit someone put up a video of a kangaroo grabbing one out of the air.

the thing with drones is a beat up , they want more regulations to make themselves look important , the local copper has enough laws to tell someone not to do something, public nuisance etc.
you could strip out the magnetron of a microwave and point it at the drone I suppose
