Subject: Selling a car

I got offered a pittance for my car as a trade-in, so I’m going to try to sell it privately. It’s been many years since I last did this and I’m unsure about the procedure. I’ve placed the ad, but do I need a roadworthy certificate? Is there stamp duty to be paid – if so, is that the responsibility of the purchaser? (I think it is.) Do I just sign over my registration on receipt of the cash?

Any info appreciated.

If you’re in Qld you need the roadworthy certificate before you offer it for sale.

I’m in Melbourne. Not sure what the situation is here.
It’s a pretty good car. Would I be out of line if I insist on accompanying the prospective buyer on the test drive? If not, what sort of security is normally required?

If it’s registered it needs a RWC.

It’s entirely reasonable to accompany on a test drive. I knew a guy who had a motorcycle stolen because the guy who took it for a test ride left a stolen car as security.

Visit Vicroads and get the transfer of rego paperwork to hand over when you sell the vehicle. The buyer will have to pay stamp duty when they hand in the paperwork. Keep copies of the paperwork.

Rules and regs here.
