Subject: Triple countdown

I’ve often thought of going to the Gold Coast for NYE for the novelty of having two New Year countdowns separated by one hour.

Now I am wondering… where in the world would be the best place to enjoy three such countdowns?

Basically you need a place where three time zones (during the Northern winter/Southern summer) are fairly close to each other.

There are plenty of those places but most of them (such as the Qld/SA/NSW tripoint) are not much fun in terms of NYE parties.

Two places that might be a decent show would be the Poland/Ukraine/Belarus tripoint or the Poland/Belarus/Lithuania tripoint but unfortunately the borders to Belarus and Ukraine might slow you down enough to take some of the fun off it.

Not many other countries bother with 1/2 houries but some do. SAQLDNSW is three TZ but it is in an unadorned desert.

From what I can gather, there can be significant queues outbound at the Belarus-Lithuania border crossings. There are four of these open to general international traffic. The most convenient for our purposes is that at Raigardas, but if the queues there are especially long it might be better to go in at one of the crossings closer to Vilnius. This might add an extra 70 km to the journey time, however. I recommend we do some practice runs in the weeks leading up to NY.

Basically you need to get from the Belarus-Lithuania border to the Lithuania-Poland border in a little under 2 hours. The tripoint is of course a point but you can’t actually cross at that location and in any case you probably want to have a party in a significant centre of population. I recommend first celebrating in Parečča in Belarus, then you have one hour to travel to Leipalingis in Lithuania some 33 km away, which will involve a border check. You then have an hour to travel the 52 km to Sejny in Poland for the final countdown.

It’s not New Years’ Day yet.

And anyway, why would you be bothered by what I do for fun?

——

Chile/Bolivia/Peru would be easier in terms of border control but that border area doesn’t have any large towns.

Well hush my grits, there is a small town right on the tripoint, called Tripartito. You could get your three countdowns even on foot.

Speaking of hushing grits, I had some the other day – they were not gritty. I was a tad disappointed.

Nah, I was testing mr kii’s bowl of grits in a restaurant. We were dining with The Man from Alaska. One does not criticise grits in that company.

Theoretically Russia/Finland/Norway would be doable but I wouldn’t like to travel that fast in an Arctic winter.

Norway to the left, Russia to the right. Finland must be around somewhere… ;) maybe passed out under a tree?

Finland is probably behind you, in that orientation.

Yes, it would seem so. The borders appear to form a squarish ‘Y’, if those markers are 4m apart, then that seems to be the only possible spot. An interesting area to hold a New Year’s Eve party.
