Stylishly-dressed gardener there…no “baggy a***d gardener” by the looks of it…
;)
the winter garden hangs on better than normal – compost keeps growing – sweetpeas start to climb
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Your compost looks good…sweetpeas!!! at this time of the year!!!
Sonny Jim whippersnipped around the other side of the round bed for me, so I can upgrade the quarter there ready for eggplant and capsicum and tomatoes (I hope)…they will all grow together, won’t they????
good going Peps all looks healthy. Love the savoy cabbage.
I’m glad you showed tiny carrots , now I know what they look like :)
Compost is looking FAB TAB:)

Isn’t it tho’, Lucky?
I’ve got a quandry: there’s some healthy but unidentified plants coming up in my compost…do I start a new compost heap and let these run riot or do I throw the next lot of compost on top and hope I have saved the seeds of whatever is coming up?????
The frogs hibernate in my compost…in the shredded paper layers…

Well if you have the room…. start a new compost area and see what comes of the feral plants. This is what I would do.

I have the room alright…have a couple of besser block 1 metre by 1 metre beds as well…might invest the compost in them ….
No doubt about it, Pepe’s compost pic is inspirational…

sweetpeas normally flower in spring. tomatoes, eggplant and capsicum are all related and grow together well – same soil, same watering, same full sun requirements.
i can only score 3 out of 5 for my compost – i don’t – shred or build in one day – i do – turn it, layer it and build it to over a metre cubed.

mumble, mumble – silly looking football game
oh well – beer and chips were good.
sweetpeas normally flower in spring.
=========================
Well! Here’s me remembering them as a winter flower, but we always had plenty for The Flower Show (Church fundraiser when I was a kid – took up the whole town hall)….this was generally the first week of September (before the heat kills everything)…
It’s amazing, the difference in our climates, how you have got sweetpeas coming on, and have just planted out your potatoes, and I am fervently hoping my potato crops before the high 30’s arrive…maybe we will enjoy
an extended cool weather “event” this year????

in adelaide we had the hottest ever march on record than the coldest period in july/august for a long time. i’m hoping for a wet spring too. those sweetpeas are on the west of the sun and only get afternoon sun – so they might be a bit late.
Judging by the photos, you’re doing something very well with your compost
——
shell bell is my compost guru – i do get huge volumes of grass on this 2 acres.

I would get lots of grass also…but not in the winter as I tend not to water then, the grass doesn’t like the cold and goes dormant…
morning all
we are getting intermittent days of sunshine and showers here – so it might be a good growing season.
the spring vege garden seems to have no outright failures so far – indeed not a single seedling lost -
- broccoli, cabbages, corn, celery, lebanese cueys, zucchinis and many onion seedlings are all small but growing.
peas and carrots are my best effort since 2005 – when i moved here.

You must be very egg-cited about the “best efforts” on the peas and carrots:)

summer seedlings are planted out and one half of my available spring planting area is left. I have over a dozen roma tomato seedlings in the hothouse.
not too eggcited – there’s a long way to go – but a good start.
…and i’ve planted – sweet potato, garlic, basil and two types of bush beans (hawkesbury wonderand stingless) in the ground

things are going pretty well –
- first blue lake beans are up
- brassica, carrots, zuchs, cueys, corn, onions and leeks all survived yesterdays stormy weather.
- tomatoes in hothouse have flowers and small fruit all over them – if i fluke a hothouse crop i’ll be exceedingly happy. dosed them up with potash.
- the two toms in the grow bag that have been planted out don’t look so good.
- no spud shoots showing – i planted them early august – i’m not worried tho’ – i once had a terrific crop of spuds when they had only small leaf growth – so fingers crossed they are busy underground.
for me these shots are a great relief – they show the mown grass in the paddock which was head height in some place yesterday

it’s nice to see what you have growing in your garden Pepe. For one reason or another I have barely started on my vege patch and I am busy all October and into November. Hopefully I will be able to get something planted out this weekend even if it is just some easy grow stuff like silverbeet and zucchinis.

i enjoyed your duck nest photo – we all have priorities and its best to just relax and do what can be done. currently you are a much more successful poultry breeder than i.
nice pics peps.
i think the spelling is “viburnum” if you need to ever look it up.
the italian seeds for the mixed salad are available again. grows a beaut mixed salad. luv this particular mix.

I figure it is not worth stressing over something I can’t manage. It will be interesting to see how a late planting goes as opposed to trying to get things in early. I have yet to see if we get ducklings, although I was able to determine last season that my new drake is fertilising the eggs.
Nice to see a mown paddock! your garden’s looking productive as usual and the carrots are doing well aren’t they?

carrots have benefited from good rains – so i am hopeful.
that fullest row of carrots will need thinning out.
i have serious compost bin envy
———————-
chuckle – a new gardening term – ‘compost bin envy’.
the compost collapses almightily – so the bin in the photo has been three quarters full on three occasions this last month. a bit like having a ‘organic waste compactor’ (also new gardening term LOL)
three shots of the front garden
- but have a look at the farmer’s golden canola crop across the road – it’s shoulder height

You have a nice full front garden Pepe. The field of canola is a nice bright view !
do you get a lot of canola come up in your garden Pepe?
bluegreen said:

none so far.
no GM crops in SA,
he does rotate crops – barley, wheat, canola and sorghum – none have spread because he reaps them the moment the seeds are ripe.

sounds like he manages his crops well then. I gather Canola can get rather weedy, and you can see it growing on the sides of the roads in Vic where it is grown.

jungle gardening is lazy gardening.
you know those parsley will need no further attention – they will provide good leaves for a while yet – they will have pups that will do well because they are acclimatised – all in all a good deal.

hi all
here on GF day in adelaide the temp is going to 30C.

g’day pomolo
you’ve got it in one – adelaide has had intermittent rain and sun since april – so the sweetpeas have grown on their own. actually they are self seeded – so apart from some minor transplanting and a bit of weeding – i’ve just watched them grow.
first broad beans of the season.
the plants date fro april and have grown to chest height and were blown around by savage winds 8 days ago.
hopefully more beans to come – they also lack moisture – so rain would be nice

looks Yummy pepe.

very unexotic vege the old broad bean. still lovely to have them for a while.
red cabbage is the next veg to come online – still picking – savoy cabbage, leek, lettuce, raddichio and celery.
the celery is good and hasn’t gone to seed yet.
almost a frost this morning.
