I’m not very good with blood or people in a great deal of pain. If couples talk about their experience of having a baby I’m having to leave the room as I start to feel faint. Same with Medical shows, I simply cannot look at or even hear what procedure is going on. Stories about operations small or major, I have to leave the room. It makes me feel very ill.

When training for SES I obviously had to do basic First Aid and I managed to do it but I couldn’t look at the photos in the text book (even though they were not photos of real injuries) same when I did my Seniors First Aid, still couldn’t look at the photos. I also made it clear that while I’m happy to volunteer to most emergencies I wouldn’t be attending any car accidents (not that we were ever called to them).

So if I’m that sensitive to blood, guts and pain but perfectly ok with dead bodies I might add. Why then can I sit and happily watch a 9 min video where a person is having a massive cyst drained. I was fascinated by all the pus spewing out for the whole vid… I don’t get it.

two people can’t be wrong

but seriously, maybe it’s about the amount of empathy you have. Sick or injured means pain and unpleasantness, dead is no pain and pus is , well, just pus.. with usually a happy ending. You have too much empathy.. that’s your problem..

Knowing that, gives awareness. Doesn’t stop the empathy seeping through the pores though.

It’s like my acuphobia. I know needles don’t usually hurt but I can’t even watch injections being given on TV.

I’ve physically thrown heroin addicts out of the house for asking me to hold the belt tight.

Dentists I’ve found can be tolerated If I close my eyes. Which is better than fish because even pinching my nose doesn’t work.

All of this applies to me too, except perhaps the draining of the cyst, I don’t want to find out about that. But I did watch an “Operation Ouch” marathon a couple of days ago – four or five TV shows in a row without a break, and by the end I was surprised to note that I was happily watching operations that for the first TV show I was switching on the mute and turning my head away. Desensitisation perhaps, what was happening was genuinely interesting. For the last show when watching the operation I found myself “thinking like a doctor”, which I’ve heard recommended for people watching operations but had been unable to do before.

Analysing my discomfort with dead bodies reveals I am disturbed by the loss of dignity involved. A person would not plan to leave their body lying about so for this to happen represents a breakdown of that individuals ability to direct his/her own future. It is like the environment reminding you who is in charge.

Minor pus doesn’t bother me but I could only take so much of that giganto shoulder pustule before experiencing a slightly hysterical queasiness……

That was one of the aspects of the Ebola breakout. People were justifiably afraid to touch the bodies so they were left where they fell for weeks at a time, sometimes out on main streets.

Living through the plague must have been psychologically similar to living through the height of the cold war….

In 1665 the plague is estimated to have killed 75,000 in London alone, let alone the rest of the UK and Europe.
That’s big numbers considering the population of the time.

The signs for plague are fairly easily spotted, dead rats on the street, beggars with swollen buboes , big red crosses painted on your neighbours houses, all there to see if you look up from your iPhone
