SecondBite exists to provide access to fresh, nutritious food for people in need across Australia. We do this by rescuing and redistributing surplus fresh food, building community capacity in food skills and nutrition and advocating for an end to food insecurity.
__

SecondBite’s Research, under the guidance of our Food Security Advisory Committee, contributes knowledge towards a food secure Australia – a place where everyone has a seat at the table.
Every day we measure our impact, track our processes and investigate how we can best serve our community food programs and people in need. In 2011 the Premier of Victoria launched SecondBite’s first report in a research series ‘Food Rescue. A Fresh Approach’. Since that time SecondBite’s research interests have continued to grow and in 2012 our first research scholarship was awarded to enable a PhD candidate at Deakin University to explore food insecurity and poverty – this scholarship was an Australian first. Guest-lectures at the University of Melbourne, public health conferences and work through our research and community networks enables our research findings to be shared widely.
Our agenda for action-research continues to ensure our food rescue and education programs are evaluated and we continue to expand our knowledge of long-term preventative solutions to food insecurity.

___

SecondBite redistributes surplus fresh food to community food programs around Australia. Food is donated by farmers, wholesalers, markets, supermarkets, caterers and events. This high-quality surplus food is redistributed to community food programs that support people who are homeless, women and families in crisis, youth at risk, indigenous communities, asylum seekers and new arrivals.

Sounds worthy. No religion involved apparently.

It might be a surprise to many people how much this is already being done. By the way “fresh” is a bit of an exaggeration.
