Am I the only person on planet Earth who doesn’t do facebook?
I hope so :D
I don’t do twitter or instagram or whatever the kids call it these days, either.
Am I missing out? (serious question btw)

no.. I have several friends who don’t do any social media at all
no you are not missing out
As everyone here knows, I don’t own a mobile phone. I can check my sister’s Facebook, but only because Mr buffy bothered to register once. He has a Facebook page, but he has scarey pug picture as his photo.
>Am I the only person on planet Earth who doesn’t do facebook?
nah, mate, me doesn’t, and my invisible friends don’t need it because they have me, a real friend.
IIRC, sibeen has failed in this area of modern living.
access to internet
was just talking to my neice in melb on FB. saw her chrissie but that only happens every couple of years. so a good way to keep in touch and see her kids grow up.

Are you missing out? This is relative to whether or not you have a life without social media. If so then no you are not missing out.
oh cool ….but I’m not as unique as I thought I was.
I don’t think I’m missing out on anything but the way some people I’ve met, especially co-workers last year, carry on about facebook, you’d think I was missing out on LIFE
I mean, to live life to the fullest, one must have a facebook profile with hundreds of friends
lol
I only use FB as a method of contacting a couple of distant friends and I tend to scroll through it’s news feed for a summary of the days news. I avoid it mostly as it is little more than a malware program that has been legitimised for use. If I ever run into Zuckerberg I’ll likely introduce to a piece of information about my preferences he won’t make money from………
i have a life and social media is part of that. they aren’t mutually exclusive.

Like a lump of 4×2 applied under the eras?
what is the difference between keeping in touch with friends via phone, snailmail, email, face-to-face, FB etc?

I’ll leave it till the moment to define specifics. That way pre-meditation can’t be claimed.

reality?
Social media is a money making exercise.
It is capitalism capitalising on some peoples need to be seen, to wave at others, to be liked etc etc
The people who invented social media are now multi billionairs, it’s been said that some of them are richer than weather girls.
The marketing was breathtaking, it was a marketing triumph to get state owned media outlets like the ABC to put links on their pages straight into the billionairs coffers.
There was in existence once upon a time when absence actually made the heart grow fonder.
reality in what way?
i don’t believe it is malware.

You “think” you are a FB customer? No you are FB’s commodity and you are sold to anyone with something to market……..

very successful too. Imagine giving the people something they never knew they wanted.

It is what it is but becomes what you make it.

My opinion on Zuckerberg is he is a parasite……….
and what are they selling of mine? only my birthday is true.
I am finding it interesting to watch my niece and nephew’s use of Facebook evolving. My niece is now 19 and was pretty heavily into Facebook a couple of years ago. Since she has gone into her nursing training – she is doing an accelerated course in Hobart – her FB participation has dropped off dramatically compared to when she was at school. I presume this relates to her growing up and having to do more real world stuff. And the novelty wearing off. My nephew was never very into it, despite being well into techy stuff. And he posts less these days too by the look of it. Their mother (my SIL) was annoyingly FBy until quite recently, but I notice she posts a lot less now too. I suspect the novelty is wearing off.
ChrispenEvan said:

on which day?
You know, I can see both sides
I can see the potential benefits, one of which, if you say start your own on-line business it could be good to link into social media
But the downside is the way new technology “tracks” our personal lives.
Seriously, there are companies specialising now in collecting and correlating a mind boggling amount of personal data to use for marketing and making big big money from it.
Once your personal info/photos are out on the net, you lose control, I’ve seen people steal real photos and use them for unsavoury/unethical purposes
bit hard when they are 3000km away, roughie. i do that when i see them. but it is nice to have contact when that ain’t possible.
ChrispenEvan said:

i use it. maybe you have an erroneous idea as to what malware is.
and how to deal with it.

Spyware would have been more accurate……
Aquila said:

No. One can have a fb profile and cull the list every now and then. Weed out the people who are boring, rude or smell funny. I go through stages of liking certain numbers, like 100 friends.
I also set my page to show only certain things and most friends are put in groups, so I can check on their stuff when the mood strikes. or not :P
In the future Big Brother will have Zuckerbergs face……
I’ve got nothing against social media but the bottom line is to make money the same as commercial TV or commercial Radio.
Like all commercial enterprises the product has to be good to survive and succeed, obviously Facebook is a good product.

Yes but social media isn’t necessary. Both my children are a long way away and do use facebook but rather than ask or expect me to join, they both informed me when I asked, “no dad, it isn’t necessary for you to get facebook to talk to us.”
well of course it isn’t “necessary”. sheesh.

the tracking has been around since the introduction of Census… the efficiency of gathering information has changed.

I don’t have an issue with social media, from a fundamental point of view, I can see the benefits, for sure.
It’s just my general ‘mistrust’ of ‘human nature’, and big business/big government, I guess.

My sons are over there and I am over here. They have fb accounts, but rarely use them. I do talk to them via the msg system and occasionally tag them in posts (esp baby photos) to annoy them ;)
Cops love facebook. Associates all in one easy location and for the bonus selfies with bags of ganga and guns.

Depends how it is described. As a tool for collecting information on the public for the purpose of private enterprise it is highly ‘good’. As a social media tool it establishes a superficial degree of empowerment through interconnectedness in return for the disempowerment by predation it provides in it’s commercial enterprise role. I don’t take that particularly seriously but it definitely limits how much I use FB. I far prefer to address my own needs than sell them to some desperado……..
the contagion, it spread far and wide
it is, no doubt, a common social kind
it starts young, with a childish whine
mum, everyone else doing it ya cried
everyone else has got one, you sigh
contagion takes hold, otherwise’d die
school, TV, religion in to that psyche
treadmill of leftbehindness, you it buy
I don’t do any official social media, but this place is basically social media, of a more casual and agreeable kind.

It is a more convenient way of keeping up with distant friends and relatives than emails, phone or snail-mail. I have lots of relatives that live interstate and overseas, it’s nice to see a photo or two of significant life milestones or some remarkable event. It’s great to get a little video of my nephew taking his first steps and so on.
So I keep it for that and filter out the rest. I’m not really that interested in friends who have one of those satellite trackers that automatically update facebook that they’ve just done a 10.35 km bike ride.
I agree with that, p_p.
I find it an icky view into some people’s lives….why do so many people post photos of their injured feet? Seriously…stop it!

Oh all right I’ll take the tracker off for my next ride.
I’m happy to communicate with siblings via the telling bone (chats commonly last an hour or more, at least with the older sister & the bro) and occasional email. None of my relatives go in for FB and although I had an account for a while I never warmed to it and never posted anything much.

See, a picture is worth a thousand words, so it is therefore much more efficient to use Facebook than talk for an hour.

Oh my God, Aquila is so special and interesting!
Kim Jong-un, superior leader, overfed supreme leader
great leader, extraordinary leader, mighty leader, psychopathic leader
Does Mr Jong-un with strange haircut have facebook page?
The ABC online report on the SA bushfires seems to just consist of Twitter feeds.

I don’t facebook, twitter or instagram (or mobile phone ot SMS for that matter), except that I once set up a twitter specifically to send a message to Adam Savage. In case you’re wondering, Jamie Hyneman’s twitter account has a name ‘JamieNoTweet’ so don’t tweet it. Twitter was also useful for following the landing and first images from Mars Curiosity.
Miss mollwollfumble does facebook. I gather that most people who facebook do so in order to play the computer games there and look at the photos with funny captions there. It’s annoying that I can’t look at anything on facebook without an account.

Make one for your pet. Fabricate an appropriate age for them. If you don’t have a pet…get one :P and then give them two names, ie. Molly Wollfumble or Molly Wolf or Dweeb Dog. You get the idea.
