glyphosphate is the generic stuff and costs $12 – roundup is the monsanto product and is reputed to be more reliable therefore more expensive.

Yes I know the No name
“ Glysophate” stuff is cheaper—but not as strong—so you have to use more however I think the price rise is way over the top

As i understand it, glyphosate is manufactured in China. As you recall, the Gov there shut down the factories in order to clean the air for the recent Olympics.
Guess what. Glyphosate gets dearer same as anything else which becomes scarce.
The good news is that production should have resumed by now and the price should fall accordingly.

I also use the glyphosate instead of roundup and have not found it to be a weaker product.
I think it’s timing when you spray that gives a better result. If a plant is actively growing it is affected more than if it is dormant. A bit of a sticker in there to help the mix adhere to leaves is also a good idea. Saves waste.

I use 10lm of product to 1 litre of water and a splash of either whiteoil or a detergent as a sticker.

The last time I bought the glyphosate—a friend pointed it out to me (he is a farmer) that is was a weaker product and when I checked it was—I also use the detergent to make it work better

Yeah i know the amount of chemical in the stuff is less, but it seems to work just as well at the same rates. Maybe the recommeded rates in the roundup brand are unneccessarily high????

If you look at the abel you can see the concentration.

Roundup is 360gm/Lt of the active stuff, same as the generic I bought.

There WAS a weaker one too but I was onto that.

20 years ago monsanto announced they intended to take over all the world’s food production by patenting all seed varieties. very evil. beyond belief ! fortunately the issue was resolved.

the plant breeders rights was put to rest, but now ciba geigy (sp?) and monsanto are trying the generically modified (GM) foods swindle. if they get their way the only commercially available seeds will be hybrids bred to tolerate glyphosphates – and these will most probably cross pollinate traditional crops. oh joy oh joy.
consequently lots of good people are pushing hard to get rid of everything but organics. i find it impossible to weed without using herbicides on paths, under trees, drives and rocky/ rubbish areas tho’.

And God said unto St. Francis “I have granted you all knowledge of
gardens and nature. Render unto me now an accounting of my plants. What
has become of the clover, violets, thistles and other herbs of the
field? Eons ago, I set into motion a perfect no maintenance gardening
plan, designed with plants that grow in any type of soil, withstand
drought and multiply with abandon. The nectar of their copious blossoms
attracts butterflies, honeybees and flocks of songbirds. I expected to
see a vast pageant of colors by now. But all I find are these green
rectangles.”

And St. Francis replied, “It is the work of those tribes that are
multiplying upon the face of the earth Lord. The Suburbanites. They
judge your flowers to be weeds and go to great lengths to kill them and
replace them with turf.”

God: “Turf? But it is so boring, so monotonous. It attracts not the
butterflies, birds or bees. Only fat grubs and sod worms dwell therein.
Do these Suburbanites really want all this turf?”

St. Francis: “Apparently so, Lord. They go to great pains to grow it and
keep it green. They saturate the ground from which it springs with high
nitrogen fertilizers and risk exposure to hazardous toxins in order to
destroy any other plants that may trespass therein.”

God: “The spring rains and warm weather that increases all vegetation
must gladden the hearts of these Suburbanites.”

St. Francis: “Apparently not, Lord. As soon as it grows even a little,
they cut it back, sometimes even twice in a week.”

God: “After they cut it, do they bale it up like hay?”

St. Francis: “Not exactly, Lord, not bales as such. Most of them just
rake it up and put it into bags.”

God: “Bags you say? Why? Is it a cash crop? Do they get money for it?”

St. Francis: “No Lord! They actually pay someone to haul it all away.”

God: “Let me get this straight. They fertilize this turf so that it will
grow and when it does, they rush right out and mow it down and then they
pay to throw it out?”

St. Francis: “Yes Lord!”

God: “These Suburbanites must be relieved in summer when we cut back on
the rain and turn up the heat, slowing down the growth of all
vegetation.”

St. Francis: “You aren’t going to believe this Lord! When the grass
stops growing in summer, they drag out hoses and pay more money to water
it so they can continue to mow it and pay to get rid of it.”

God: “What! At least they kept some of the trees. That was a sheer
stroke of genius, if I do say so myself. The Trees grow leaves in the
spring to provide beauty and shade in the summer. In the autumn they
fall to the ground and form a natural blanket to keep moisture in the
soil and protect the trees and bushes. Plus, as they rot, the leaves
form compost to enhance the soil. It’s a natural circle of life.”

St. Francis: “You had better sit down, Lord. The Suburbanites have drawn
a new circle. As soon as the leaves fall, they rake them into great
piles and pay to have them hauled away also.”

God: “No! What do they do to protect the shrub and tree roots in the
winter and to keep the soil moist and loose?”

St. Francis: “After throwing away the leaves, they go out and buy
something which they call mulch. They haul it home and spread it around
in place of the leaves.”

God: “And where does mulch come from?”

St. Francis: “They cut down trees and grind them up to make the mulch.”

God: “Enough! I will hear no more about this turf! Mention it not to me
again! St. Catherine, You’re in charge of the arts. What movie have you
scheduled for us tonight?”

St. Catherine: “Dumb and Dumber, Lord. It is a real stupid movie
about…”

God: “Never mind, I think I just heard the whole story from St. Francis.
