Subject: Cane toads - should we eat them?

I just went out the back and nearly tripped over a cane toad as large as a baseball. It hopped into the house, and I had to shoo it out.

It seemed to me that it’d be a reasonable size for a meal. Now, frogs are eaten in many parts of the world, and there’s plenty of recipes out there for frogs.

Why shouldn’t we eat cane toads?

(Yes, yes, I know there’s poison glands, but we could remove those, surely.)

No reason we shouldn’t but it wouldn’t reduce the wild population. Growers would just need an enclosed kiddies pool and dog food.

Does it taste like chicken?

Professor Hayward said cane toad meat is a healthy meat option that is high in essential omega 3.

He has eaten the warty-skinned brown toad and said it does not taste as bad as one might think.

“There’s nothing, once you cook it, that’s particularly slimy about it,” he said.

“It’s not a particularly strong-flavoured meat. It picks up a marinade well.

“It’s like a toad or frog in any cuisine. Frogs based in a French restaurant taste like garlic.”

I agree with Curve, they would have to be bred to cover arses etc

I’m just thinking of my back-yard cane toads. Rather than golf-club them (not that I do), why not eat them? Not particularly thinking of trying to reduce the wild population. Just that it’s a potential food resource right there in my back yard, and it’s cheaper than beef.

the Chinese might eat them – they eat snakes and live scorpions

failing that unleash thousands if robots to cull them

you could create a line of machines to halt the advance . the cane roads get machine gunned by clay pellets

the machines get supplied their pellets by google drones

you create lines of defence

the machines also move forwards as they clear the land of cane toads

I am just wondering whether they are good food , given they in the back yard here, and I nearly tripped over a baseball-sized one this evening.

So are they a potential food resource?

Speaking of cricket…there was an English willow cricket bat at the antique’s fair. it seemed to be set up for wall decorations as two cricket balls were attached by a length of string. It looked old. I left it there.

No. They are a pest. Dettol is the best killer. Put a hole in the top of the bottle and then squirt it on them.

When I arrived at our place (near Byron) 17 years ago there were green tree frogs everywhere, now there are none.

Really, I am talking about my yard. I guess I used the “Royal we” in the title, but it can’t be changed now. Perhaps I meant “Mrs V and I”. Dunno.

Cane toads are here, in my yard (and even in my house, tonight). Big and bold. Can I risk eating them? Are they a food resource for me?

(Speaking of food resources, munyeroo grows well here. There is heaps to be harvested. I love the stuff. Pleasant flavour and very nutritious.

We don’t have cane toads in our Brisbane neighbourhood. Never seen one, alive or dead.

There’s lots of crows, though. I suspect they have them well controlled.

cane toads are probably like fugu.. it takes a master to prepare them just right and they could kill you. That’s part of the thrill of eating something. A specialist industry created through trial and error.

Anyone here eaten fugu.. it’s supposed to numb your lips (the carefully portioned poison) – always buy fugu from a master, never the apprentice

When I were lad there were no cane toads in Brisbane, when they came the invasion wave was legion.
There were millions of them, if you see a couple of cane toads in your back yard now remember that there were many many more times that at the van of the invasion wave, and big mothers too.

A TV show I saw years ago indicated that the problem the current fertiliser collectors have is getting the permits that allow them to be in possession of more than just a handful of toads, as they are a “controlled substance” as well as a noxious pest.

Are there fewer cane toads now than in the 80s?

Some scienticians made cane toad sausages with an added yucky taste to discourage quolls from eating the toads and dying, so presumably there are non-deadly ways to prepare cane toads. If you ate a cane toad, is it poisonous enough to kill a human?

I have hundreds of the ugly bastards around my street. I attribute this to living so close to the marshland (also the reason we get a lot of mice and mozzies).

Last time I looked, one was technically allowed to breed cane toads but not rabbits. Although I believe there are lobby groups slowly succeeding in getting bunnies allowed as pets, with conditions such as pets have to be desexed. Not long ago the rules were changed to allow rabbits on buses… as long as they were on buses leaving the state.

I don’t think so. Cane toads like the edge of civilisation, where they have the lights of the city attracting the bugs of the bush. Thirty years of town planning have removed a lot of their habitats (open drains, pockets of bushland etc) but I am sure the edges of civilisation will still have more than their fair share.

There is some doubt that there is sufficient posion in one cane toad to kill a healthy human.
But why risk it? Even getting sick from poison is not going to be fun. The poison glands are on the head, but the poison leaks onto the skin if the animal is stressed. It is suggested to freeze them to minimise their dying stress.

As a minimum, the rear legs (skinned) are not poisonous. (Earlier in the thread, I posted links to recipes and preparation techniques.) I would imagine other muscle areas are not poisonous either. Whether or not there is sufficient body and fore-leg muscle to make it worthwhile to fully skin them is not yet apparent.
