Found this, it’s a bit interesting. I’ll leave it here.

http://www.thisiscolossal.com/2015/01/soundweaving/

“Soundweaving is a recent project by Hungarian design student Zsanett Szirmay that turns patterns used in traditional folk embroidery into music by translating them into laser-cut punch cards fed through a custom music box.”

(also a message for PM2Ring – one of the music box discs I bought on the weekend is The Blue Danube.)

Thanks, kii.

I was thinking it might be a fun project to write a program that can play the music from those old discs. The program would work by analysing a photo of the disc. For best results, the camera should be aimed face-on to the disc so that it’s perfectly circular in the photo. Also, the photo should be high contrast so that the exact position and size of the holes are easy for the program to determine.

That sounds like a very specific response.
Interestingly, someone has drawn pencil lines on the disc…on the bumpy/sharp bits side. It appears they sectioned off certain parts and I think there might be something hadwritten on there too.
