Subject: Black boxes in cars

Watching a doco series about car crashes. One particular episode involves a pickup truck which hit a sedan. The crash investigators were able to get data from the truck’s black box to prove the truck was speeding at the time of the accident.

It’s the first I’ve heard of vehicles having a black box. Is it only certain vehicles and if so, why don’t all vehicles have them to assist in accident investigations?

What will insurance lawyers do when black boxes and cameras reveal the rights and wrongs of all road incidents?

even cyclists will have recording gear of some kind

some cycle helmets have built in cams

dash cams and other sensors that record will become the norm

The recording devices used in trucks were done voluntarily in return for cheaper registration. (Generally the “100 speed limited” trucks) The unfortunate thing is that they are easily fooled by calibrating them with smaller diameter or worn tyres.

It will never take off for private vehicles as people know the police will use them against the drivers.

The instructor at my last defensive driving course reckoned that they were already in many modern vehicles but the police don’t want anyone to know. He claimed they were using them as part of their forensic crash investigations.

Given all the gadgetry in my new car, I can see it would be easily possible to do.

This Prince Phillip knighting kerfuffle looks set to tip Abbott off his political ledge. Turning out to be an interesting year in politics.

Some model BMWs have them as part of the maintenance as required regime and NIssan GTRs have them to disallow warranty claims if people take them racing. It will eventually filter down to all models, the technology is cheap and there are too many vested interests to ensure it happens.

I also assume there would be a black market in altering them as well.
