That’s the plan. I’ve been getting a really good reception with everyone I talk to. I just didn’t have enough time or resources to make much noise.

Anyway the good news is that Newman is gone and whoever wins is likely to be a minority government, so some balance will be provided by the minor parties and one or two Independents.

Newman’s problem is that he doesn’t understand democracy. He thinks it’s like the army. He gives orders and everyone does as they’re told. Any dissenters are punished.
Fortnunately democracy isn’t quite like that.

I know Peter Wellington, Independent, is going to win his seat and he does a grat job.

Bugger me

It looks like you’ll probably get your 250 scheckels back, Bill.

Damm, I had a fifty on it that said you wouldn’t :)

Me too! :D

Not bad from winning only 7 seats last election

unfortunately allowing labor back into power in QLD will just be another disaster , LNP , labor different face of the same coin I’m afraid.

we’ll have labor leading us down into the dirt as fast as the LNP

you can’t keep just taking debt to solve problems in the same way as sacking thousands of key personnel and selling off assets will solve problems.

it’s been the managers that have created the problem in qld , sack them and all the problems will go away.

get the workers to take a poll to sack or keep managers , you’d get rid of the most inefficient and poisonous snakes of the government service very quickly

you could create a four lane highway from cook town to Brisbane

bridges over every creek

fences to keep kangaroos off the road , the animals would cross where the bridges were

you could make the main highway a till road so that a trip from brisbane cook town was only 50 dollars say

of course

the road speeds would be increased to 200 to all approved vehicles that undergo a 6 monthly vehicle exam and pay extra on their rego

businesses would go for it

you’d see the rise of the über van on those highways

me laughing as I charge down the road at 200 – legally

you could build Skylon though, that ago the chew through some tax payers wallet

High and fast is tactically defunct these, too vulnerable to missile attack. What you need is low level terrain following type stuff, but you’ll probably be sick all over your nice suit in doing so,

The last federal election had many thousands of instances of people who voted at several polling stations. The new ID rules won’t stop that, but will prevent dead/incapacitated and non-existent people voting.

On my new computer I still have Bing as the default search engine.

Searching for election results brought up a load of hits from 2014 and earlier, and the most recent one, half way down the page was from 7 hours ago.

Trying the same search on Google gave the first hit as updated 20 minutes ago.

So another decisive win for Google. It seems that Microsoft really need to get back to basics, listen to what the electorate are saying, and find a leader who can project their core message in a convincing way.

Plato was of the mind that politicians are made – not born

to be the “leader” of a state it didn’t require you to be “mates “ with people just the ability to do the job

the problem with choosing stupid and selfish people create leaders like Menzies a man enlisted with the army who resigns and gets out as soon as war is declared then sends other men to their deaths later on

no leader of a state should be sending men to their deaths without being sent to the front line to share the danger

how long would gallipoli have later if the prime minister had waded through the water and hit the beaches then realised the thing was a disaster ?

Gallipoli would have lasted 9 days not 9 months

john Howard should have been sent to the wastelands of Afghanistan , for too long we have endured leaders that make decisions without consequences.

Recovery from debt at a rate that doesn’t cause job losses is the biggest challenge. A fast recovery would cost jobs , where as a considered recovery would have less impacts on those in Queensland one would think.

I think the huge job cuts after Newman came into his position as a Premier affected too many people and drastically so…from what people stated at that time, whom had been affected.

Especially my sons. Plus it’s my homeland, DO, and I was raised to be vocal about things, to question stuff and to think. Is it okay if I have an opinion about Australian politics?

Plus the video is cool. So, suck it, mate.

they need to encourage manufacturing back into queensland

start making things

training people properly, reopen tafe so its teaching technical subjects especially part time so stuff like air con, instrumentation and electrical diplomas are available freely so people can BUILD on their skills

hair dressing courses and legal studies and one part time course in the evening for basic welding are a good way to make sure no one has any skills to make money in a brass tacks way.

So Abbott hides behind the supposition that his government were voted in to ‘clean up the economic mess left by labor’. This is clearly an obfuscation. Labor were voted out because their in-fighting was counter-productive, first and foremost.

Labor should put Penny Wong up as leader.

I know little of her policies. I’m going on the way she carries herself. If she had greater party support she would be formidable as a mouthpiece. She can draw on that asian inscrutability thing and mess with your head because of her sexual perspective. I think it would be very interesting to watch.

I didn’t know that. She obviously doesn’t go around telling everyone. Or maybe I just don’t bother to look for religious affiliations because they don’t mean anything to me. I looked it up….Pilgrim Uniting Church according to Wikipedia.

She’s well spoken, she’s rational, she’s measured in her responses (even when they are defamatory towards her)… IMO she would make a very good PM…

And I think she handled that with aplomb, in the main. And I think Ms Wong would also be able to do that. Stretching minds is good.

I agree, I think JG did a good job as PM… Her problem was the way in which she became PM. It painted her as the ambitious (will do anything to get to the top) she bitch. The reality I, she won an election and negotiated her arse off to form stable government and of course in the end it was this negotiation that was made out as a lie and she was crucified for it.

Palaszczuk seems like a different person without the pressure on her. I wasn’t sure how to take her before last night. I think she might be hiding a nice person behind a politicians desk. Good on her. I suppose it is up to what the party has learnt from the last election as far as how she will do.

If you’re referring to the kung fu, I met one by chance, at his own home in the Hutong District in Beijing. The conversation, via an interpreter, took a strange turn when we asked him about the weapons on display. He could talk about kung fu for hours :) The other I met through my own kung fu school last year, when he visited from China.

I’m not into ballet, so doubt I will ever meet anyone who knows the ballet dude, but you never know.

Very cool. Baryshnikov would have been interesting as a martial artist. Can’t say I’m much for ballet but when you see someone who expresses the limits of physical dexterity it impresses whichever school they are from.

It certainly did – Where I stood all day and handed out cards got me the most votes, simple as that.
The couple of other stations where a few friends did the same for a few hours also helped the most.
Where there was no-one, I got very few or no votes.

It’s extremely disappointing that these days people haven’t done a bit of research to find out who they want to vote for before they get there.

After experiencing the whole voting day thing, I would strongly push for getting rid of the entire circus out the front.
No hawkers, no banners or advertising, etc.

Just have a large poster for each candidate on the wall somewhere inside, with their details and policies, so if you haven’t made you mind up when you get there you can figure it out.
And no photos of the candidates – I overheard one guy as he wandered in saying, “where the good-looking girl, I want to vote for her”.
FFS …..

It could be that some people tend to ignore independents and only consider them worth voting for when they see them actually out and actively campaigning.

so that does work! we were talking about the value of standing out front on voting day. I don’t know if it means that people are unprepared or unresearched (though I don’t discount that some are) it might mean that the effort of a real face works better.
Last time we voted I voted for the local candidate that was out and about at teh schools and door knocking (yep good old fashioned, in the hot sun, on the streets door knocking asking people how they would run the place etc. that was nice the personal touch.

We were doing a tour of the Hutong District, which is the oldest part of Beijing. We were given the opportunity to talk to one of the residents and have tea with them in his home. It was awkward; I’m not used to sitting at a stranger’s dining room table sipping tea and asking them about their home and routine etc. It seemed the host was bored with it all, but these tourists provided him with an income so it was worth tolerating them. Then my FIL decided to ask about the weapons hanging on the wall.

The old guy’s eyes lit up, he jumped up from his seat, grabbed a weapon and started doing KF moves. He was serious, but allowed my sons to have a go too. Afterwards, he could not stop talking about his own KF background (he trained with Jet Li) and the achievements of his son, who had been the Shaolin Champion of China for many years in a row, but who was now living in the US and running a KF Academy of his own. A very proud father.

Afterwards, we thanked him and gave him a very generous tip. As we were leaving on the rickshaws, he chased us down the road with a big smile and a few packets of China postcards for the boys :)

Pity that you have such an infantile one, DO. Don’t worry about me, I have an exquisite sense of humour that does not rely on making fun of people’s names or their gender *shrug * It gets quite boring and predictable.

It may be pronounced that way but this is a text based forum & most people don’t know how to spell her name.

Wow, the USA must be so advanced, I can Google and thanks to Glowie and BC…I can c’n‘p. Her name is Annastacia Palaszczuk. HTH

I said most people don’t know how to spell her name. You have to admit it’s not easy to get Pal-A Shay out of Palaszczuk

Different people, different experiences. My father’s birth name was unusual for Australians, he didn’t like it being mangled and he didn’t like being made fun of because his name was different. I guess he taught me to be respectful. Maybe some people just go with the flow and accept the nicknames….my dad didn’t like nicknames.

Again I’m reminded of how things were when I expressed my horror and fear here, that an Abbott led government were voted in. I was attacked by morrie for swearing and having an opinion about the elections.

A friend sent me this last night, out of the blue and rather timely. I might embroider it on a wall-hanging for a few of you. I think it might help.

“The trouble is that, for women, being “nice” often translates into putting up with things we should never put up with. How many times has some creep sat uncomfortably close to me on the bus and stared me down, yet I’m too afraid to just get up and move, lest I offend him?

We smile when we’re harassed on the street or hit on by jerks. We laugh at sexist jokes. We learn that when we have strong opinions, we’ll be called bitches and that if we get angry, we’ll be called hysterical. When we say what we want, we’re called pushy or aggressive.

Part of learning “ladylike” behavior is about learning to smile politely when someone is being crude. Femininity has long been attached to passivity and to being docile. Men fight, women giggle and fume silently.”

It does? People struggle with Katariina and ask me if it’s a spelling mistake :/ when I’ve filled out a form…so they think I can’t spell my own name?

I had one woman try to say it and then turn around and say: I’ll just call you Kat. I politely told her to GAGF.

My surname’s not really fair on people, given that it’s a Polish spelling of a Ukrainian name and I’ve lived in English-speaking countries all my life. It would make more sense spelt in English, but I couldn’t be bothered changing it after 55 years of confusing people.

There are various legitimate methods of spelling my surname, and when people are writing it down they ask “…is it spelled like this?” and I always answer “Yeah, close enough”. Makes it difficult for the big computer following our movements to keep track of me. :)

I find Bernie is easiest, but then you get people who don’t equate Bernie with being the standard nickname for Bernard. I’ve had colleagues answer the phone looking for me by the name Bernard only to be told that nobody of that name works here. Also had a personal loan held up because my payslips were under the name Bernie and the application form was Bernard.

NEWS FLASH!! VOTERS NO LONGER HAVE MY CONFIDENCE! – ABBOTT

Tony Abbott said in his press club question-and-answer today that Australians only elect labor governments in a fit of absent-mindedness!
This is arrogant nonsense, typical of a Prime Minister hopelessly out of touch with the Australian community.
Labor governments are elected because they stand for a good society in which everyone is treated with fairness and the rich and big business pay their way.
The Abbott government has failed to deal with the key issues for the future of this country; climate change, a fair and equitable tax system, an independent public service, rights for Australians when they go to work, a decent pension system and access to quality, affordable education..
No amount of government spin can hide the fact that the budget cut $5.5 billion from family payments and set about destroying Medicare.
This is a terrible government led by a hopeless Prime Minister.”

Bugger me, you may have to throw one Pauline Hanson into the mix. She’s in front by a few hundred votes in her electorate.

Queensland will end up with a Premier who has no idea what the GST rate is, and a buffoon for an independant.

Yes, and that’s good. The ALP & LNP would have to present their cases to each of the few, and if they can’t make a good enough case then those few will likely vote ‘no’.

and was highly unfair IMO… especially in this context… she negotiated an outcome with the minor parties to secure their support… that is she put self interest, and those of her party, aside to form a stable consultative government.

Queensland still doesn’t have an election result.
There must be a better way than waiting for over a week.

The ABC 24 told me that “Labor’s candidate for Maryborough Bruce Saunders said he was “quietly confident” he would deliver the required target of 45 seats the ALP needed to form government.”

However, Mr Katter said it was irrelevant who won Maryborough and he would continue with the negotiations.

  • 100 per cent fly-in, fly-out mining to be banned
  • Freehold title deeds for ‘first Australians’
  • Abolition of public service sackings
  • All towns without a high school be provided with year 7 as a minimum
  • Six new regional roads
  • Three-year funding commitments for road works
  • Allow the Mt Isa copper smelter to continue operating
  • Enhanced royalties for regions program
  • Party status returned for party’s with two or more members
  • Implement Galilee Rail line
  • Statutory milk and sugar marketing
  • Remove flying foxes from populated areas

Which ones are which? I can figure out some of the reasonable requests and some of the crazy ones, but I have no informed opinion on others, such as 100% FIFO banning.

I think the 100% FIFO is a bit ambitious… it’s just not practical to build (from scratch) entire communities in remote regional areas. It’s hard enough to get people to go there to work in the mine, let alone run the local bakery or staff the pharmacy or run the school…

I also think the flying fox one is a stretch as well as the moratorium on public service redundancies.

Just curious – In the case of the seat where a candidate has been disqualified:

Rather than have a by-election why do they not remove the person from the counting and leave all other candidates in their current order on the voting slips? Basically so everyone who might be numbered higher than that person has their number decreased by one?

 1 First Preference
 2 Second Chosen
 3 Disqualified Person
 4  3 Penultimate Selection
 5  4 Last Choice

Wouldn’t that save a lot of money? Or is there some other factor at play? I can’t see how that disadvantages anyone…

The removal of that candidate before the election may have completely changed people’s voting intentions.

I would guess the voting order is pretty concrete once it had been selected.

But a by-election will change voting intentions. If I won that seat I’d be consulting legal advice and consider contesting the necessity of a by-election. But I don’t know if that would work, I guess that is why I asked. Will have to wait and see how it plays out I suppose. I was just curious…

That’s why they’re necessary in cases like this. You can’t fairly muck about with what people originally voted for without giving the people another go.

and the final numbers are in…

ALP 44 + 1(IND)
LNP 42

so with the right moving and shaking the LNP could convince Peter Wellington to cross the floor and trump the ALP. should make for a very consultative and collegial year on parliament…
