If you are on the older copper lines then the answer is no. The supply voltage is supplied by your nearest exchange.
If you are on the newer NBN fibre, then the answer is yes. They install a small UPS system to keep you going during power outage periods. One of my bugbears with the NBN solution. It works, but how many people are going to remember to change batteries every 3 years or so, or have the technical skills to do so even if they remember.
If you are on the newer NBN fibre, then the answer is yes.
i believe it is an optional extra. may be wrong though.

Or is 11 the number of people that have actually been connected to the NBN?

cordless aren’t the standard type phone. they do require power for the radio transmitter and receiver in the base set.

Where do you get one? I have been looking in Op shops for one, no luck so far. Would a “Dick Smith” shop sell these?

Not that I’ve seen (not that I’ve been looking).
go to telstra and ask for one. cost you so much a month to rent. or did. don’t have a landline anymore myself.

Freecycle is your Friend! Many people have spare ones at home.
The last time I bought a non-mobile phone was more than 10 years ago and I got it from a Telstra shop.
with the old style rotary you have to find out whether it is pulse or tone dialling. some exchanges wont recognise pulse dialling. so if you get a rotary it has to be a modern one that does tone.

I’ve got half a dozen in the shed with minor problems. Whenever ne breaks I go through and fix another one again.

when the phone rings a 78vac or there abouts signal is sent from the exchange to signal someone is trying to call
the ac was used originally to cause a bell to ring
when you are talking the phone runs on 48vdc ( ELV)
when using the copper network you have max distances you can run from your NTD, voltage drop considerations and Telstra doesn’t want your creating your own comm system using their system to piggy back on to.
in the old days you’d turn a generator handle and create VAC on the line to the operator
the ac would cause a bell to ring there and a light to come on to show them which line was calling
they would then patch you into with a physical cable to the person you were trying to ring, they would ring his phone first though and then hand the call over
when you were done I guess the light might go out and another bell to signal the call was over and the cable should be removed
in the old days tapping the line by spies/ criminals would
would be done by physically tapping into the line
nowadays all information in the phone lined pass through main nodes that send the info to anonymous buildings either in the city or elsewhere
all information gets recorded
anonymous buildings with large comms/ phone lines are the give away
the information collected from these buildings then gets uploaded to echelon a “ secret “ data mining operation run by a few governments
the give away in the old days if a line tap was the line would be quiet as some current was being fed off somewhere else

cross talk
copper lines that are unwound (not a proper twisted pair) become candidates to allow cross talk to happen
you can hear other people on the line
you line isn’t physically connected , it’s the magnetic fields coming off the other cables that induce signal on to

I do. Everyone I know does. Apart from perhaps my son.
I have a cordless phone that plugs into the landline and I recently upgraded to a new one that has power back up so that it can still be used in the event of a power outage…

Some people are blessed with a landline capable of delivering fast intertubes. I’m not one.
let me clarify.. I have a land line attachment.. (for internets) but not a phone attached to that. We use our mobiles/ipads/computers for communicating… apart from that, no would be rapist can cut your mobile phone line.

a UPS?
I really like old phones.. love the really really old ornate ones.. but I would especially like one of those where you had to ring through to the exchange, I wonder if Old Mavis is still there waiting for the buzz
Nothing so advanced as that. The handset, obviously, has a battery but there is also a battery in the receiver and when the power goes out it runs off the battery. Don’t know how long it is supposed to last though…

don’t forget to keep it charged and changed…
Well, it charges by itself, but I haven’t investigated how long I should keep it until I should change it. Probably should…
At the Redoubt there is no communication, if I fall off the roof or get gored by the big grey bull or suffer a nasty paper cut I have a personal locator in the kitchen drawer that if I activate it the Severe Paper Cut Helicopter Team will be airborne and zooming in on the satellite signal.

do what everyone else does and wait until it doesn’t work.. they when it stops, get mad, try to hack it a couple of times, go online to research and make a facebook status update about how upset you are, then just go out and buy a new one.

um.. you’d have to get to the locator first, which would be difficult if you have a bull horn in your side or say, a broken hip…

That’s what I normally do, except for the facebook part. The reason I have this new one is because the handset in the old one no longer held a charge. I could have got a new battery but went all out and got a shiny new phone instead…

Hi folks, thankyou for your advise, got a “Dick Smith” basic corded slim line phone from “Dick Smith”, about $30, but it doesn’t want to share a line with the existing ‘phone which is a Panasonic 5.8 GHz unit, guess I will just leave it unplugged until I loose mains power, then plug it in.

You should register it, only costs a few bob.
If someone wants it bad enough they will buy it off you for a good price.
it is the name of a zappa album so probably already has some copyright on it. dunno.

How many outlets do you have on the one phone line? I have one in the bedroom, one in the kitchen and one in the computer room My Panasonic unit has three handsets and only the master needs to plug into a phone line. I have the landline plugged into a different outlet so that yes I can actually listen and share conversation on the landline while the Panasonic is being used Though if any one of the Panasonics is being used, the other Panasonics won’t work until I hang up the first one. I can also plug a landline into the computer room which does all the same things.
