Old news for me. Many many years ago, perhaps even before I was born, my father hand-drew a complete map of the Earth centred on where we lived, which happened to be in Sydney. The opposite point was stretched into a circle around the periphery and a large part of that periphery was the coast of Morocco.

Many years later, a very similar map appeared on the front cover of a World Atlas produced in Australia (a Robinson’s I think), but the centre wasn’t as accurate, using perhaps E150, S35 as the centre point – west of Nowra. My father spotted the difference immediately, the coast of Morocco was nowhere near as dominant on the Atlas’s cover map.

Every few years I take a look at which point on the globe is opposite which. It’s remarkable how few land areas are actually opposite other land areas.

For a plain stout, this is pretty impressive.

It’s surprisingly hard to find two spots close to the Equator and also close to sea level.

Wear a suit made from those tiles the space shuttles used for re-entry.

I don’t need that kind of negativity in my life.
