Subject: Good sugar vs bad sugar

I heard an interesting statement this morning – “I gave up processed sugar in favor of natural and unprocessed sugars six months ago, and I am really noticing an improvement in my general health”. Now, the bloke who said this is not the sort of bloke to try fad diets, and in fact, I suspect this is the first time he has ever paid attention to the food he ate.

This deserved some research, so off I wander searching for some sort of sane adult discussion on the topic of sugar, and why some are “bad” and why some are “good”. And the strange thing is, I actually found what I believe to be a good detailed analysis of the various types of sugars.

Part 1 – Introduction to sugar
Part 2 – What is the healthiest sugar?

Conclusion: All sugar is bad sugar.

I wouldn’t say all sugar is bad sugar. But availability of sugar is high now, so people eat more of it than, say 200 years ago. And we haven’t yet evolved to handle that.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. There isn’t even one sweetener in the whole history of mankind that hasn’t been linked to disease at some time or other.

I’ve also said before that if a medicine doesn’t have any dangerous side effects then it doesn’t have any effect at all.

That’s just silly. Sugar is excellent.

TBH, if he switched to ‘natural’ sugars, he is probably eating less processed crap than before, and that may be the difference.

That is my assumption.

My sister is fructose intolerant, so for her, it’s a bad sugar. I believe a forumer is also fructose intolerant but I can’t remember who it is. Possibly JTQ?
