Took some photos other than Brahminy Kites. Thought you Gardeners might like to see? (Scribblers on the Mega Fora can look too…)

first up, a Nudibranch.

I have a little Olympus which is waterproof to 10 metres. It is literally a point and shoot digital, but it is fun underwater and it means I can hang off a boat and take photos that I wouldn’t risk the SLR on.

capital FUN is its main purpose but if you’re patient, you can get the odd clear underwater jobby….

Hey Pepper, go here for a whole bunch of photos
—-
your latest ones are the best (closeup and telephoto lens giving you new interest) – although the cloud shots are in the realm of fine art and my all time favourite is—
‘Boera Sunset 002’ – mainly because of the subject matter – i love the rough and the smooth sea and the little coastal village.

thanks Pepper, I spent today at Boera, and it is a great local place for me to get away. I’m known as Uncle to all the kids and they certainly feel like an adopted family to me.

It’s an awesome place to just hang…

It was great fun ;)

I have an inquiry about Ixoras. The main one I see around here is the Prince of Orange and I think it’s an ugly plant with an ugly flower. It always looks as though it’s has sunburn and the flowers look faded and insipid. I’m not keen on the yellow one either.

Recently I have noticed a different Ixora that has beautiful full colour orange flowers and the plant is covered in them. I don’t think It’s a new hybrid because some of the shrubs I’ve seen are almost 1.5 mt high and in the yards of very old homes. I was wondering if there are Ixoras and Ixoras? I would certainly grow the one I have seen around lately but I don’t know it’s name. I can’t believe I’ve never noticed this plant before.

Maybe you know the one I am talking about Bubba or anybody?

I saw a decent looking creamy yellow one and a pure white one at the markets this morning. They surprised me because both looked healthy with good green leaves. Maybe planting them in the full sun is a mistake in Q. Just a thought.

I have Ixoras out in the full sun here, and yes some of them look a bit ordinary. I think if you keep them in check by removing the long branches that are going for it, they tend to be happier. I think they waste a lot of energy by going hard and going leggy…

not really, the Volcano is really noisy and there were some monster BOOMs which just smashed from the mouth of the mountain, so not enough weird calmness to get that eerieness… It was interesting how the water went from slate grey to that turquoise green after the second big BOOM. A whole load of sulphur was released then…

There was also some awesome lightning and thunder just cracking away amongst the clouds that were rising.

if you look at the end of the land on the right, you can see Coconut Trees….

So this volcano is forever spewing smoke or were you just lucky? It’s a spectacular sight. I’m probably a bit jealous you get to see these things and I don’t. My nerves are grateful it’s only by photo.

I have been there when nothing is happening only for it to go bunta later that night… It can be hit and miss as to how speccy it is….

Thanks Yeehah, I learnt someting last week about photography which I think will improve my game in the near future… and the Frangipani is a prime example…

Love your Photos, PM. It’s hard deciding what I like most, they’re all so good. I think your skies and the clownfish appeal to me most – and the plumeria :)

Thanks O40, some of the skies here can take on a real painted look if I get the WB right on the camera. And the clownfish are the cheekiest fish in the coral… they are very protective and swim right at the camera, almost daring for a photo to be taken :)

I’m a rank amateur who takes copious numbers of happy snaps. I’m doing an elective in my Business Admin course at TAFE on digital photography, but it’s seriously small cheese in photography terms, just teaching us to get to know our cheapo happy snappy digicams. The very little that I’ve picked up just makes me realise how much I don’t know and how hard it really is to get a good photo. I stunned myself in that last post of yours, PM, I actually have an inkling of what yer on about when you referred to WB!! Never new it existed until two weeks ago.

All of the photos you put on your Flickr site are gorgeous, I’d love to be able to take photos even half as good!

You beat me by a week! I knew what WB was, but I didn’t know what it was… Last week while trying to nail a shot of a sunset, something clicked inside me head,a nd I realised that I utilised the WB function for the better… not just taking a million shots and hoping for a good one. And the fact that the group of photos on display are taken with two different types of cameras, it helps to know the nuances that makes up each camera.

WB is White Balance. You know when everyone first got video cameras, they were told that they should focus on a sheet of white paper before filming… this Balanced the video camera so that colours were “true to life”

Haven’t actually done any test shots to see what difference fiddling with the White Balance will do. Spent a couple of weeks playing with trying to get a good portrait shot or three – main criteria were sharp focus on subject’s eyes plus fuzzy out of focus background. The cheaper happy snappies have a ‘portrait’ setting that did the fuzzy background automatically, took me a week of hauling the kids to different locations around town trying different ideas with the digicam, until I figured out how to adjust the depth of field. You’ll want to know, I’m sure (even the teacher hadn’t had to figure this out). It was suggested that I focus on something in front of the subject, press the shutter button halfway to set the focus, then move onto the subject to push the button all the way down to take the photo. Buggered if my camera would manage! Tried focusing, then getting subject to take a step back before I snapped, but then subject was badly composed. Finally … I lean forward, focus, take a big step backwards, about 2-3 feet, snap! Perfect fuzzy background! Oh was I just jumping out of my skin when it finally worked!

And figured out by accident that if I set camera manually to 400 film speed, get good action shots of the kids jumping on the trampoline or boogie-boarding in the shallows.

Better happy snaps, and even more of them ,yay!!

Ta :)

so how do you achieve WB with digital still camera?

I’ll continue… your new digital camera can identify white areas in your shot a whole load quicker nowadays. So the WB bit of your camera will detect any white in frame and try to balance out the reds the blues and the greens in order to get a good “true to life” colour shot.

Some cameras will allow you to alter the WB, leading towards certain hues…

But, you know when you want to have something on the left of the shot in focus, and you point at that image, half press on the shutter and then re-position your shot before depressing fully? Well, the camera will also tend to set it’s WB at the same time you focus with your half press.

so the fun bit can be achieved by when taking a landscape, everything will be in focus because it all tends to be far away, so you can manipulate your ocean shots or your sunset shots by aiming at the colour you most want the WB to be dominated by, and then half pressing and then repositioning… this way, you can get redder sunsets, and bluer waters, or whiter clouds…

so if there is no white in my shot, I point at something that does first, half press the shutter, then point at my subject and take the photo?

kinda… the camera will detect white(ish) areas much better than you or I, so there is no real need to go looking for a white spot before you take your shot.

Thanks PM. Enjoyed them. Those lakes are in need of water. The Kokada Track village looks as though it is perched on the edge of the world. Whoever guesses it first won’t believe you when you say there is only darkness on that side. Good work.

Thanks Pomolo, I don’t know if those lakes have ever filled up… there were some awesome waterfalls in the rocky craggs that surround the lake, and they were very loud and noisy.

The lake floor was wet, it was like a big peaty boggy sedge basin, with some crystal clear streams coming from the direction of the waterfalls.

The darkness on the edge of the village, was just a jungle filled ravine, it was in a heavy shadow with the Village bathed in morning sunlight that the contrast means you cannot see the valley alongside.

Cheers :)
