Frozen mixed berries recalled across Australia over ‘hepatitis A link’
——————————————————————————————————————-
One-kilogram bags of Nanna’s frozen mixed berries are being pulled off supermarket shelves across Australia because of potential hepatitis A contamination.
People who have bought the berries are advised not to eat them, a statement from Victorian packing company Patties Foods said.
The fruit can be returned to the place of purchase for a “full cash refund”, the company added.
Stores are being advised and there will be advertisements in national newspapers on Monday.
…………………………………………………………………………………………………………….
Dr Finn Romanes, from the Victorian Health Department, said they were asking people who had eaten this product in the past 50 days to look out for symptoms of the disease.
“Symptoms typically begin with fever, loss of appetite and nausea, and can progress to jaundice, which is dark urine, yellowing of the eyes,” he said.
“In a very small number of cases there can be death associated with hepatitis A infection.
“If you develop any symptoms after consuming these berries, please contact your GP.”
————————————————————————————————————————————————————
A second case of hepatitis A linked to Nanna’s frozen mixed berries has been confirmed in New South Wales.
It follows the identification of three cases in Victoria linked to the same product.
The NSW Health department has issued a warning urging consumers not to eat the product with best-before dates up to and including November 22, 2016.
………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….
“So far we’ve had two people that have confirmed hepatitis A, that in the weeks to months before they developed hepatitis A had consumed these berries and they’re coming from different parts of the state, so we’re concerned this might be a more widespread problem,” said Dr Sheppeard.
Dr Sheppeard said NSW Health were expecting more cases to arise.
“The incubation period for hepatitis A is between two and seven weeks, so at this stage it’s an early stage of the investigation and we’re still gathering information about how much of the product is in NSW homes but potentially we will be seeing more cases in the coming weeks,” said Dr Sheppeard.
Dr Sheppeard said it was important people could identify symptoms early enough to help prevent the disease spreading.
The early symptoms of hepatitis A include a fever, loss of appetite and nausea.
These symptoms develop over several days to a week before more advanced signs of the disease start to emerge, including jaundice which is noticed by yellowed skin and yellow eye balls, or dark urine and pale stools.
“It’s quite infectious and readily spread from person to person, that’s why its important people are aware of it now so that if they are in the early stages of the illness they can take steps to prevent spreading it to others,” said Dr Sheppeard.

i read that one of the pickers was caught urinating on the berries in the tub to increase their weight as they get paid by the kilo. don’t think it was related to this recall but just a relevant incident that could be a problem. though you’d think all fruit would be washed before sale.

I wonder how many other pickers piss on the product to increase weight
maybe the industry needs a small device to check for urine on the product

Hep A transmission is usually oro-faecal, I believe, which suggests the problem is not urine.

It seems obvious then that a lot of pickers are not washing their hands, so the industry needs devices to check the unwashed.

it would be really hard to supervise pickers to this extent. plus you sometimes need a piss and handwashing facilities can be miles away. also supervisors want work to be done not people going back to their water bottle to wash their hands.

exactly, they are marketed as a ‘ready to use’ food. One would expect all the hygiene stuff to be taken care of (provided that it stays frozen) to be fair the virus may even have come from the washing process, having contaminated water. these ones may have been better off non washed

I don’t know if this was just a Perth thing, but, years ago, this huge gym chain offered people ‘lifetime’ memberships to the gym. Then the whole company went into liquidation and a whole bunch of people lost a whole lot of money. About five years later a new mega gym company rose.. with the rumors of the same board of directors. No life time memberships being offered though. fool them once… etc

PATTIES FOODS MEDIA RELEASE: UPDATE
15 February 2015
Patties Foods extends Nanna’s Frozen Mixed Berries Consumer Recall to include Creative Gourmet Mixed Berries.
:( My boys made smoothies with these this morning. I made sure I checked the brand beforehand.
Bummer.
fyi Consumers have also been told not to eat fruit from packets with best-before dates up to and including November 22, 2016.
Your boys have most likely had a Hep A vaccination course and should be fine.

If you or anyone you know believes they may have eaten contaminated fruit within the last 72 hours, there might still be post-exposure prophylaxis available, but you will have to act immediately.

Clearly, we both have experience in the wine industry. ;)
I was once working as a contractor at a winery.
When you open the hatch on top of the fermenting tanks the vapors that come out are genuinely overpowering. I saw a bird land on the rim of an open hatch, keel over and fall in to the tank. I told one of the winery workers about it and he just shrugged. “Happens all the time” he said. I asked if any effort was going to be made to fish the bird out rather than just let it rot in the wine. “Nah…”

Patties Foods Recalls Nanna’s Raspberries linked to a specific source in China, as a precaution.
________________________________________
Patties Foods has extended its Consumer Recall to include Nanna’s Raspberries 1kg packs following investigations through our global supply chain over the past few days that have identified the potential link to a specific source of raspberries in China.
Patties Foods MD & CEO, Steven Chaur, said the further recall is a precautionary measure in the interests of public safety.
“While there are no confirmed test results indicating a potential link to Hepatitis A, we are working proactively with Health Authorities based on the information they have presented to date.
“Investigations through our supply chain have identified a specific source of raspberries as a potential common link to the possible safety issues raised by Health Authorities.
“The specific source supplied raspberries which were packed in Nanna’s and Creative Gourmet Mixed Berries, that were the subject of the Consumer Recall announced over the weekend.
“The source also supplied product for Nanna’s Raspberries 1kg packs, with Best Before Dates up until 15/09/16.
“The supplier of raspberries is no longer used by Patties Foods, since November 2014.
“Product produced prior to November 2014 may still be in the market and we are taking this added precautionary measure of conducting an additional Consumer Recall of all frozen raspberries associated with this specific source located in China, in the interests of public safety.
“The specific source did not supply raspberries for Creative Gourmet Raspberries 300g and 500g packs.
“The Consumer Recall is in advance of further microbiological test results, but given the potential health threat and the level of community concern, we are taking this precautionary measure.

The hepatitis A vaccine is effective for prevention. Some countries recommend it routinely for children and those at higher risk who have not previously been vaccinated. It appears to be effective for life. Other preventative measures include hand washing and properly cooking food. There is no specific treatment, with rest and medications for nausea or diarrhea recommended on an as needed basis. Infections usually resolve completely and without ongoing liver disease. Treatment of acute liver failure, if it occurs, is with liver transplantion.

Probably not a problem in developed nations but is often deadly in third world nations.
Globally, symptomatic HAV infections are believed to occur in around 1.4 million people a year. There is however likely tens of millions of infections in all. In 2010, acute hepatitis A resulted in 102,000 deaths which is slightly up from 99,000 in 1990. Developed countries have low circulating levels of hepatitis A virus while developing countries have high circulating levels of hepatitis A virus. Most adolescents and adults in developing countries have already had the disease and are thus immune. Adults in mid level countries may be at risk of disease with the potential of being exposed.[37

FYI nerds:
“Approximately 85% of individuals infected with hepatitis A virus (HAV) have full clinical and biochemical recovery within a 3-month period with nearly all individuals recovering within 6 months. In about 10% to 20% of symptomatic patients, a prolonged and relapsing course can occur lasting several months with persistent fever, pruritus, diarrhoea, jaundice, weight loss, and malabsorption. In <1% of patients, a fulminant course of illness occurs characterised by worsening jaundice and encephalopathy. Reported case fatality is 0.6% between the ages of 5 and 14 years, 0.1% between the ages of 15 and 39 years, 0.8% between the ages of 40 and 59 years, and 1.5% for 60 years and older.”

A friend contracted Hepatitis C following a motorbike accident after which he required multiple blood transfusions. This was back in the early ’90’s, I think, before blood was not screened for it.
Recently he underwent treatment for it and had to take very high doses of antiviral medication for 6 months. He did not fully complete the course, saying he would rather live with Hep C than continue with it. So far his blood tests are clear, but he will need to wait until the end of this year to find whether it is gone for good.

Little Speedy seems to have a stomach bug and ended up on the toilet for most of the night*. He was crying .
- He is home today drinking Hydrolite and resting. Keeping an eye out for Hep A symptoms. Although I usually buy Creative Gourmet Rasberries (which I noticed last night were still stocked in the freezer at WW), I’m not 100% sure that this was the brand that we used a few weeks ago.
Fingers crossed for you.
Oh dear :( how worrying. I hope he’s okay soon.
