except the laws everywhere are stupid and victimise home gardeners.
you should see the water wasting methods employed by commercial growers – no wind breaks, overhead watering, no mulch, water lying in the trenches and spraying cars as they pass.

not sure of your meaning.
home gardeners generally have changed over to drippers or soakers that lose no water to evaporation but the commercial growers seem to have escaped any regulation. in fact the mining industry, public service and industry generally have not announced their water saving schemes and their usage rates are not public.
i favour a quota system so that everyone has to be equally thrifty.
in fact the mining industry

I understand that the mining industry hereabouts has been exemplary with their tailings…although they really had no choice with the prolonged drought we just had…

Many have tried, but no one wants to own the problem. One just gets passed from dept to dept.
My own boy has not had one full successful year in school from kinda. By Gr3, school was dropped as a lost cause. The Ed Dept even threatened me with prosecution because I refused to send him to school ( because he hurt people), I said please do ! Didn’t hear a thing after that.

Here’s a cracker. I worked at an oil facility for a while last year in far western Qld. They produce many thousands of litres of water each day. They had been treating it and allowing it to flow down a natural watercourse, with the blessing of the EPA etc. All good stuff. It is a tad salty at first but good for cattle and could easily be useful for irrigation with a bit more work. It actually goes through a series of reed ponds and is really good water when it hits the creek..
Well the landowners want money for allowing the water to flow through their land.
Oil company said no, you can have free water but we’re not going to pay you to have it.
So what do you reckon happened?
I’ll buy a beer for anyone who guesses.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
No. But if they did the oil company would just turn the water off and find an alternate method of disposal.
did they drill a big hole and pump it back into the earth?
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
No but that is in fact what they do in a lot of places. It keeps the pressure on the reservoir and disposes the water.
The place i worked at in Yemen produced 125000 barrels a day of oil and that was 15% of the total fluids recovered. That’s a lot of water.

so they sprayed it into the air – unbelievable !
OK. In order to not have to pay the landowners royalties for supplying huge amounts of free clear clean water to them in an arid zone, the company spent a bit of money on a sprinkler system 50 feet up in the air and covering about 10 acres over the top of the ponds.. Turn on the pump and the water disappears..

What is most unbelievable? That they did it or that the property owners wanted money to take it away?

Yes that was the view of the oil company too. I think it cost about 50,000 for the sprinkler system and earthmoving to enlarge the ponds. Owwners wanted a similar amount each, annually.

The way i get around, i might be able to hand deliver it Pepe. (Though homies do’t travel too well.)
My old cat had elevated thyroid levels at her last checkup, three weeks ago. I took her back today so they could repeat the test to make sure because she had none of the other symptoms.
The results will be back tomorrow but it looks like she does have it.
It’s very treatable but we’ll be looking at about $1000 for radioactive iodine treatment. After she has it she must stay at the hospital in isolation for a week. We can take her home after that but there’s all sorts of precautions we’d still need to take so a lot of people opt to let the vet board their cat for the extra week.

what I find interesting is that in a marketing exercise at a conference a few years ago, our speaker had us make up a scenerio of where our organisation would be in 10 years time (from then). As part of the scenerio we had to imagine that the US would be bankrupt as in his opinion that was a real possibility. Could we be seeing the beginning of the end of the US as a finacial leader in the world economy?

here is the article for those in a hurry…
“The Brisbane City Council is urging residents to grow their own food as part of its community gardens initiative.
It hopes to set up a network of small farms across community facilities, parks and schools.
Environment Committee chairman Peter Matic says it will help the city reduce carbon emissions.
“It’s about buying food locally and taking up those opportunities to plant basics in these community gardens so our food doesn’t have to travel as far, therefore we reduce our carbon emissions,” he said.”
I guess, for the time being, this would come under the “parks and gardens” water allocation…
I also heard on news that Sth Queensland will be drinking recycled sewage next year too—-I will buy water when I visit there
I’ve got Brisbane City Council tomatoes in my garden. Haven’t a clue what sort they are (suspect maybe cherry toms) and I can’t remember which patch of tomatoes are them either. They came along to one of our “all company team briefs”. Handed out tom seeds and green frogs (to eat :).
Hope this works

This was in the Advertiser and on the news tonight……
MORE flexible arrangements will be put in place for watering gardens from Monday but households will still be able to water for only three hours a week.
Under the new arrangements, householders will be able to water their gardens either on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays depending on whether they are even or odd numbers – but cannot exceed a total of three hours for the two days.
The Government moved for the changes after a Cabinet meeting this morning where it considered calls from the community and gardening experts for more flexibile watering arrangements.
Even number houses will be able to water on Tuesdays and Saturdays between 6am and 9am or 6pm and 9pm while odd number houses will be able to water on Wednesdays and Sundays between the same hours.
Water Security Minister Karlene Maywald said the new arrangements would not affect the use of watering cans and buckets which could be used at any time on any day of the week.

In the long term, I can see Energex pressuring the Brisbane City Council for a less “treed” look …however I believe, after last year’s storm, that although tree branches bring down powerlines in a storm, the presence of trees can create a windbreak…it would be interesting to see a “model” of the damage if there were no trees at all…

Just across from us…it’s my personal theory that it’s all the electricity from all the big substations they have there, not to mention the proximity of Blackdown Tableland…that attracts these wild storms…they get them far more often than we do, poor things…we just got a nice downpour, about 20 points I would say, then a bit more at sunset…fog this morning…

I’ve never cottoned on the the sci-fi TV shows myself, although I did like Blakes’ Seven (I think I’ve got the right)…now that had some oomph! Some people even named their children after the characters…eg Avan…
Now, I have hit the wrong key combination and the screen font is very small…the RHS frame fills nearly the whole screen…what have I done???

the problem is not the vehicles, but the riders. They need to take due care and be aware of the capabilities and limitations of their vehicles. Also to wear appropriate protective gear such as the required helmet.

And the vehicles being of the correct design to fulfill ADRs, the rider and bike licenced..

those minibikes should not be on the road (or ridden across the road,) it is illegal. they are for private property only. Not the bike’s fault – but the rider’s.

We had bad dust cover here as well. Locals first said it was smoke from all the bush fires but once it went yellow, dust was the word. Seems to be gone this morning though. I heard it said that there is a possibility that the dust may reach as far as New Zealand before it settles.

I’m getting the impression that city hives are thriving where country hives are collapsing, because you don’t get widespread applications of pesticides in the urban centres. Might be the future for beekeeping for all we know, but it does mean trouble for pollination of food crops if bees cannot survive in rural areas. Another reason to seek organic methods of pest control.

Yeh, that’s the conclusion I’ve read in a few places. Mind you, the places I’ve read it in are the places that are already biased that way. I wonder if non-farmed (native) bees are having the same problems? I haven’t seen anything in the news about that.

yes.. cool hazard reduction burns should only be done when temps are cool but also when the moisture level and relative humidity are high.

>Bugger, wasn’t a Colombian Footy player who was shot after missing a penalty in the World Cup, many years back?
Yes, and no. His name was Andrés Escobar Saldarriaga, he scored an own goal in the 1994 FIFA World Cup against the USA, costing some very dangerous people a lots of money in bets..
He walked out of the “El Indio” bar, located in a Medellín suburb, and met the messy end of a weapon, being shot 12 times. It was said that after each shot the gunman yelled GOAL, imitating a south american sports broadcaster..

That’s the one, old Escobar… poor bugger.
Sickening…and related apparently to the loss of these wagers…but anything can happen in any game and that’s what makes this murder so shameful…if you put money on a wager, you must be prepared to lose it, that’s what wagering is all about…
A whole team tho! sport should just be sport, but then look at the trouble the Junior Rugby League is having with parents abusing the umpires, etc…it’s not like the country is going to become slaves to the oppositon if anybody loses…
gets off soapbox

sad news from PNG, the Bus on Bus collision last Tuesday has claimed some more victims with a few more dieing in Hospital over the last day or so. 43 are now confirmed killed in PNG’s worst ever road accident. Oddly enough, one young chap walked away from the crash without a scratch or a bruise!

The sea’s evaporation has left layers of highly salted sand, which winds can carry as far away as Scandinavia and Japan, and which plague local people with health troubles.
Coca-Cola plant ‘has dried up our farms’ say Indian villagers
“The level of groundwater dipped too low and it made farming nearly impossible. Like many other farmers in Kala Dera, we were finally forced to sell the land to a mineral powder maker eight years ago,” said Mr Nayak, 41, whose farm produced wheat, millet and vegetables. He also had to sell his cows and buffaloes. Not long after Coca-Cola opened its plant in the already semi-arid and Kala Dera, in Rajasthan, in a locale surrounded by farmland, the water table in the area dropped significantly, leaving farmers unable to access it and reducing their land to dust.

MEDIA RELEASE
For Immediate Release: Sunday 09 September 2010
Cancer Pesticide Link – US President’s Cancer Panel Report
The report recommends that people consume food grown without pesticides, chemical fertilizers and growth hormones
‘The latest report by the US President’s Cancer Panel states that environmental toxins, especially chemicals are the main causes of cancer and raises particular concern over the exposure levels for children.’ Andre Leu, Chairman of the Organic Federation of Australia stated
‘The report that has just been published by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the National Institutes of Health and the National Cancer Institute also stated that the current methods of testing and regulating chemicals such as pesticides are inadequate.’ Andre said.
‘Very significantly, the report recommends that people consume food grown without pesticides, chemical fertilizers and growth hormones’ Mr Leu said
Several critical issues around chemicals have been raised by the report.
Most Chemicals have not Been Tested for Safety
‘Only a few hundred of the more than 80,000 chemicals in use in the United States have been tested for safety.’
Pesticides Linked to Many Types of Cancers
‘Nearly 1,400 pesticides have been registered (i.e., approved) by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for agricultural and non-agricultural use. Exposure to these chemicals has been linked to brain/central nervous system (CNS), breast, colon, lung, ovarian (female spouses), pancreatic, kidney, testicular, and stomach cancers, as well as Hodgkin and non-Hodgkin lymphoma, multiple myeloma, and soft tissue sarcoma. Pesticide-exposed farmers, pesticide applicators, crop duster pilots, and manufacturers also have been found to have elevated rates of prostate cancer, melanoma, other skin cancers, and cancer of the lip.
‘Approximately 40 chemicals classified by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) as known, probable, or possible human carcinogens, are used in EPA-registered pesticides now on the market.’
Testing is Inadequate
‘Available evidence on the level of potential harm and increased cancer risk from many environmental exposures is insufficient or equivocal. The Panel is particularly concerned that the impact, mechanisms of action, and potential interactions of some known and suspected carcinogens are poorly defined.
Meaningful measurement and assessment of the cancer risk associated with many environmental exposures are hampered by a lack of accurate measurement tools and methodologies. This is particularly true regarding cumulative exposure to specific established or possible carcinogens, gene-environment interactions, emerging technologies, and the effects of multiple agent exposures.’
Current Testing Fails to Accurately Represent Human Exposure to Harmful Chemicals
‘Some scientists maintain that current toxicity testing and exposure limit-setting methods fail to accurately represent the nature of human exposure to potentially harmful chemicals. Current toxicity testing relies heavily on animal studies that utilize doses substantially higher than those likely to be encountered by humans.’
Testing Fails to Account for Harmful Effects of Low Doses
‘These data—and the exposure limits extrapolated from them—fail to take into account harmful effects that may occur only at very low doses. Further, chemicals typically are administered when laboratory animals are in their adolescence, a methodology that fails to assess the impact of in utero, childhood, and lifelong exposures.’
Testing Fails to Account for Combinations of Chemicals’
‘In addition, agents are tested singly rather than in combination.’
‘Single-agent toxicity testing and reliance on animal testing are inadequate to address the backlog of untested chemicals already in use and the plethora of new chemicals introduced every year.’
Women Carry Higher Levels of Chemicals
‘Further, studies by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) show that while all Americans carry many foreign chemicals in their bodies, women have higher levels of many of these chemicals than do men.’
Chemical Contaminants are Passed on to the Next Generation
‘Some of these chemicals are found in maternal blood, placental tissue, and breast milk samples from pregnant women and mothers who recently gave birth. These findings indicate that chemical contaminants are being passed on to the next generation, both prenatally and during breastfeeding. Some chemicals indirectly increase cancer risk by contributing to immune and endocrine dysfunction that can influence the effect of carcinogens.’
Children also Exposed to Chemicals in Utero
‘Children also can be exposed to toxins in utero via placental transfer and/or after birth via breast milk. Tests of umbilical cord blood found traces of nearly 300 pollutants in newborns’ bodies, such as chemicals used in fast-food packaging, flame retardants present in household dust, and pesticides.’
Children Are at Special Risk for Cancer Due to Environmental Contaminants.
‘They are at special risk due to their smaller body mass and rapid physical development, both of which magnify their vulnerability to known or suspected carcinogens, including radiation. Numerous environmental contaminants can cross the placental barrier; to a disturbing extent, babies are born “pre-polluted.” Children also can be harmed by genetic or other damage resulting from environmental exposures sustained by the mother (and in some cases, the father). There is a critical lack of knowledge and appreciation of environmental threats to children’s health and a severe shortage of researchers and clinicians trained in children’s environmental health.’
Children’s Cancer Rates are Increasing
‘Yet over the same period (1975–2006), cancer incidence in U.S. children under 20 years of age has increased’
Leukemia Rates Higher for Children Exposed to Pesticides
‘Leukemia rates are consistently elevated among children who grow up on farms, among children whose parents used pesticides in the home or garden, and among children of pesticide applicators. Because these chemicals often are applied as mixtures, it has been difficult to clearly distinguish cancer risks associated with individual agents.’
Concern over Food Residues being too High
‘Only 23.1 percent of samples had zero pesticide residues detected, 29.5 percent had one residue, and the remainder had two or more. The majority of residues detected were at levels far below EPA tolerances …but the data on which the tolerances are based are heavily criticized by environmental health professionals and advocates as being inadequate and unduly influenced by industry.’
Regulation of Environmental Contaminants is Inadequate to Protect from Harm
‘The prevailing regulatory approach in the United States is reactionary rather than precautionary. That is, instead of taking preventive action when uncertainty exists about the potential harm a chemical or other environmental contaminant may cause, a hazard must be incontrovertibly demonstrated before action to ameliorate it is initiated. Moreover, instead of requiring industry or other proponents of specific chemicals, devices, or activities to prove their safety, the public bears the burden of proving that a given environmental exposure is harmful.’
Consume Food Grown Without Pesticides and Fertilisers
The report recommends that people consume food grown without pesticides, fertilisers and growth hormones.
‘Contrary to popular belief washing or peeling conventional produce only removes a percentage of the pesticides as they tend to be absorbed through the whole of the produce.’ Andre Leu said
‘The most effective way to avoid pesticides is to eat organic food. A study published in Environmental Health Perspectives found that children who eat organic foods have lower levels of pesticides in their bodies.’ Andre stated
The University of Washington researchers who conducted the study concluded ‘The dose estimates suggest that consumption of organic fruits, vegetables, and juice can reduce children’s exposure levels from above to below the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s current guidelines, thereby shifting exposures from a range of uncertain risk to a range of negligible risk. Consumption of organic produce appears to provide a relatively simple way for parents to reduce their children’s exposure…’

Slightly more positive news..
Unremarked and virtually unnoticed, Vandana Shiva, an acclaimed Indian physicist, philosopher, eco-feminist and environmental activist, was this week named winner of the 2010 Sydney Peace Prize.

Saw that – just shows Facebook can be useful. However personally I’m not optimistic – all they’ve committed to is switching to “good” suppliers of palm oil, and I have no faith in there being ANY significant quantity of palm oil on the global market that isn’t contributing to rainforest destruction. The Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil is a joke, IMHO.
If they could replace palm oil entirely with other ingredients, that would be something to write home about.

I couldn’t get the page on the larva but that picture is so gross. A bluebottle is kinda beautiful so it’s just as well that larva changes somewhere along the line.

that’s the point. one of the arguments against GM was that it would create more pervasive weeds, but ‘those that decide’ kept claiming it would not be a problem!

“my new house”…. sounds promising. The day after we decided to buy this place, 4inches of rain fell, so we drove out here to see what the water was like. 2 days before settlement, TC Olga blew past and dropped a tree or three, and made a mess. It is so nervewracking when it isn’t yours…. yet.

Knowing the PNG media like I do, this was just another poor example of editing, either by the Author or the Editor. A case of where spell-checker hasn’t done its job either. How is this for a passage:
“All four a wheel chair ridden. Invalid they cannot be of help to one another in doing house choirs or helping out in the garden. But this four siblings have God to thank for their loving parents for putting up with them and still providing the basic things in life for them. This is an amazing story told by GORETHY KENNETH who visited the family on Buka island. REPORT PAGE 7“
This is the guess also that the Journo’s name could be “Dorethy” but in PNG, it could well be Gorethy.
Perhaps they’ve discovered Baileys ?
I’d assume with a surname like Kenneth, their Christian name would be Dorothy..

I know!! The more I learn about bacteria, the more I am convinced that this anti-bacterial (soap, cleaners etc) trend going on in the world is complete, utter madness.
So many interesting things in this article – like, there are specialised, localised bacteria colonies adapted to living on the inside of your elbow, and the back of the knee :D
No anti bacterials, disinfectants in my neck of the scrub…not with the septic system…

Fewer rainy days than ever before for Perth
Chalpat Sonti
November 9, 2010 – 6:24AM
Rain.
Perth is set to smash a 41-year weather mark, even as it basks in the warmest spring on record.
According to Bureau of Meteorology statistics, there have been 57 days this year in which rain has fallen, 26 fewer than the same time in 1969.
For the whole of that year there were 87 days where the rain fell, which until now is a record low.
Advertisement: Story continues below
Barring a miracle, that record is set to be well and truly broken. On average, rain falls on 107.6 days a year.
The city is basking in the warmest spring to date on record, with a mean daily maximum temperature of 23.8 degrees.
The previous record to date, of 22.9 degrees, was set in 1914, and equalled in 1987.
Perth’s record warmest spring saw a mean daily maximum of 24 degrees, also in 1969, while the average maximum is 23 degrees.

so the decision by a US court telling him that he had 2 weeks to cull or relocate his collection which had been a passion of a lifetime, was fair? This seems to me to be a trigger which perhaps could have been avoided???

They could not have been more mistreated than the eventual result.
Best case scenario would have been to have swooped and impounded then relocated to natural habitat, thence presenting him with the bill, which probably would not have prevented his suicide but at least would have offered the animals a better chance.

Ultimately, all responsibility should fall on the perpertrator., if we can get them to pay.. An example few may realise, is that when you go to register your car in NSW, and require a greenslip. Just one speeding offence within the previous three years, will pump the price for renewal of the CTP slip by almost double.

there is always a basic assumption that is taken as fact because it fits their theory, but just because a lot of people believe something, doesn’t necessarily make it true, and vice versa.
Expansion Tectonics Explained is another interesting read if you feel inclined, on an alternate to the drifting tectonic plate theory. It’s doesn’t start on the premise that the earth’s radius is fixed and therefore creates a new and challenging model.

where else would you expect to see non-mainstream news? Really, the time span is way too short for any real scientific analysis to be made. But then again so is the mainstream’s view time span, if a bit longer. Time will tell who will be eating their words.

I certainly agree that conventional media has a strong bias against any news/event which necessarily involves a long time span, and a bias in favour of the immediate/quick/sudden. I include the Daily Mail as conventional media in that context, though.
But I would never go to the Daily Mail as a source of anything accurate or peer reviewed, personally :) Part of that is my own bias – the chap who sits next to me at work has a “Hated by the Daily Mail” badge proudly displayed, and has to repress a shudder if I accidentally send him a DM link. It has rubbed off a bit!

lol! I take anything I read in any newspaper with a pinch of salt. They are all trying to push an agenda of sorts and will take an innocent comment and make it headline news! I am not sure I like the peer review process either. It seems to me that a whole lot of like minded people who have been given much the same education will support anyone in the majority view and gang up on someone who dares to think differently, but that’s just my opinion.

I respectfully disagree. I think scientific education isn’t about learning “this is how things work”, but “this is how to run experiments to find out how things work”, so I have confidence, personally, that (by and large) the process does what it’s supposed to do, without any overwhelming bias from things like political opinion and so forth.
Having said that, I do think some particular aspects of particular industries are worrisome. I think medicine may have gone too far down the path of breaking the human body and its problems down into narrower and narrower areas of focus, and has lost of lot of opportunity by disregarding a more holistic attitude. Wait, that’s not quite worded properly. I think medicine needs to do both. I think the narrow focus will yield excellent results sometimes, but I think at other times it misses something important.
I think the precautionary principle has been chucked out the window when it comes to regulating new uses of chemicals, particularly in consumer products, which terrifies me. Particularly in combination with the “narrowing” effect (e.g. new crops/pesticides etc being tested in a simplified lab environment, which doesn’t contain the massive combination of organisms etc found in the real world).
But I should reeeeeeaallly be working.. :)
I’m glad everybody has different view points though, we’d never get anywhere otherwise.

We had a librarian, complete with degree and post grad qualifications, turn up at our library in town (we were the Regional Headquarters for out here), insisting that she was “lost”. These towns don’t put up the “to” directions until they’re more or less down the road, so she was going to Moranbah but there was no “Moranbah” sign in our town. We had to “lend” her one of the assistants to go to Moranbah, and back again. It says quite clearly on any paper road map, how to get from Emerald to Moranbah (you go up through Capella and Clermont), but she would not have a bar of this and insisted that she might end up “lost”… on a designated, two-lane fully-sealed highway???
I got a letter from my insurers, too, saying they could not find my street on any references so I have to pay full flood insurance like the rest of town…They could not ask the Council for town maps???? I haven’t told them yet that if I get flooded there, the town water tower will be “under” as well… I need to ask them their definition of “flood”…

Like they can’t look out their windows / windscreen and read the road signs?
Shouldn’t have to. You pay enough to get the information.
When we were building this house the insurance company knocked back our loan application because we weren’t building high enough off the ground in a flood prone zone.. I said the same. That our shire council had approved our DA because we lived at least five metres above everyone else in the zone.
Then again if you visit say, the city of Dubbo then you are informed that you are within the city of Dubbo approx 60 km before you get anywhere near a built up area.roughbarked said:

I was sound asleep on a bus last (and first) time I ever went through Dubbo…Christmas 1981…so I missed that sign :P lol
Sometimes I think Insurance folk ought to get out and about more, and rely on local information more, rather than what they can find on the internet. We have a collection of about $20,000 worth of maps in P’s business, most of which are out of date in town planning terms, but still reliable when it comes to flood plain information and such.
As an aside (on the local info thing), there was a road bridge being raised just north of Rockhampton, quite some years ago. The Govt said raise it this high, the locals got hold of the engineer and said “that high”. The Engineer successfully submitted plans based on the locals info and that bridge did not flood…not even during the worst of it when water was backing up almost out of the shire boundary…when we drove over it, there was the most marvellous “wetland” under that bridge, but I digress (it was over swampy country)…
How dopey!

Or someone similar. It is certainly an infringement on the “Global Commons”.

This was always coming since plant breeders rights were introduced. Of course the problem often is that plant breeders have no rights because they are simply using an old cultivar that’s been forgotten about often as not.

That is totally insane :-(
