I was there, I saw it happen. I took part in it.

It appears to have been removed from history.

Charlie Kovacs won it.

I saw his ute go by. I have seen a pic of him sitting on the bonnet of his car. Why can I not find any evidence of it?

Yes. Very Illegal. That does not mean that it didn’t happen.

“The Very first Australian Cannonball Run was 1984 From Sunbury Vic to Fremantle Perth. The first across the line was a Holden 2 tonner that was used as a transporter with extra fuel tanks. He was disqualified. ( Dont know why ) We Took 1st place in a Yellow Vk Commodore ex police car (Modified motor) and an extra fuel tank in the boot There was a prize of $10000.00 which was not paid because the promoter went bankrupt. All we got was a cup . Presented by the late Shirley Straughan ex lead singer of Skyhooks. There were some great cars including a ZF Fairlaine with a blower ..RT Charger ..LJ V8 Torana that passed our car on the Nullabor at over 200klm. I have some footage from TV but most was banned .”

Should be more of them!
Very difficult to do these days though. But in the US in the lat year or so there was a small team that crossed from the east coast to the west coast in just over 28 hours. That’s an average of around 160 km/h so it’s possible.

From Charlie

I saw an advertisement from someone who was going to start a race across
Australia. I was interested, and at that time I had a six-wheeled V8 Holden HX aluminium tray ute so I ran that.
One of the secrets was not stopping for fuel very often, so
we made a purpose-built aluminium fuel tank which carried quite a few
hundred litres. We went to Melbourne to start the race and it was in a
paddock down by a gully somewhere out of eye shot, very secretive. I
think it took us 31 hours to go from Melbourne to Fremantle.

I read an article on one of their failed attempts. Internet millionaire with too much money and time on their hands, it was going to be turned into a documentary.

So the first one was in 1984 from Melbourne to Fremantle?

Then there was another in 1994 to Darwin (and back)?

Think 1992 for the second one.
