My doc thinks I was bitten by a redback. It was a painless bite. My pinky finger was, at first, itchy but soon became very swollen and excruciatingly painful. The joint still hurts and it’s been 4 years already.

Redbacks aren’t inclined to bite for no reason. She will bite if squashed but otherwise I’ve sat reading a book one night and repeated ticklings on my leg I ignored because they were delicate and the book was engrossing. After a while owever I thought I’d better have a look. I’m glad I didn’t try slapping at it or brushing it off without looking because a redback had been busily stringing a web between the chair leg the table leg and my leg. That’s nothing on the time I found a bullant going up the leg of my shorts.

Not sure about the joint pain but the first part sounds like a redback could be the culprit. The bite itself is barely noticeable and the effects afterwards may depend on the maturity of the spider as well as the fitness of the individual. In some instances the pain is fearful apparently but you didn’t mention nausea or other symptoms.

blood flow exchange is less effective in the muscles in digits than it is in larger muscles like arms or legs. Therefore any venom in the fingers is going to remain localised and often swelling is prolonged.
I was watching Catalyst a day or so ago and they were talking toxicology and the effectiveness of anti-venom. The experts now believe that the Redback anti-venom is effective as a teaspoon of sugar when it comes to dealing with bites from these little spideys….

Young friend of Ragamuffin’s, would have been about 8 years old at the time, ended up in hospital with a redback bite…anti venom and all, I understand…but I think the reaction may have been because she was so young and skinny…
OK, I was writing my post and then posted it, and then PainMaster’s post popped up in the timeline before mine…just telling a story…not querying PainMaster’s post…
