California is getting a Hyperloop, but not where you think
Elon Musk’s Hyperloop is going to become a reality, but not quite on the grand scale it was originally conceived for just yet. Hyperloop Transportation Technologies (HTT) has reached an agreement to build a 5-mile (8-km) passenger track for Quay Valley, a proposed “sustainable model town for the 21st century” in California’s central valley.

Told youse, but oh nooo, some had closed minds

“Concept rendering of a Hyperloop station at Quay Valley”
Saved a few bucks on the architecture. The Taj Mahal, it aint.

So, i can travel from one end of the loop, to the other end of the loop a few cornfields/kms away, but i can do it really, really fast?
Well, now i know for sure that i’m living in the 21st century!
Or, is it the 1980s, and Laurie Brereton’s Sydney monorail all over again, but faster and with worse scenery?

There’s only two stations on it. Which one is ‘Here’, and which one is ‘There’?

And why do they need TV screens?

I thought it was so they could see ahead of them in the tunnel.

Actually, the TV screens are to resolve a customer-satisfaction problem.
With the speed at which the hyperloop completes its journey, passengers may feel that they’ve been overcharged for the trip.
The TV screens will show non-stop episodes of ‘The Block’ which will, as Einstein said about sitting on a hot stove, appear to make time pass very, very much more slowly.

I’ve never seen the block so can’t comment but if you want a short time to feel like an eternity then play Mr bean episodes. It’d be like staying awake for the jaunt…

Actually, I’d be interested to see if they can get the grub working.
The maglev trains started in similar circumstances, but right now there’s probably one scooting between Shanghai and the airport at 430 km/h.

It would be weird if the US went for a hyperloop given that they don’t even have a regular maglev or even conventional 1980s-style high speed rail.

It’s the Simpsons, Springfield, and the monorail all over again.
The US wasn’t interested until the salesman said “maybe a hyperloop is more of a China sort of thing”.

the thing about an exposed track
things get thrown/ dropped on it
this thing requires a perfect track
most cities are already boned when it comes to transport so it doesn’t matter what you do
come school days you’ll have millions of cars on the road in local areas clogging up routes to any super transport system

Yep. I thought it would never happen.
The three stages to any successful design are: “It won’t work. It will work but isn’t worth doing. I said it was a good idea all along”.
“The Hyperloop has been described as a cross between a Concorde, rail gun and an air hockey table.”

“The Hyperloop has essentially no relationship with the old pneumatic tube transports beyond a certain similarity of appearance. There is, however, quite a bit of overlap with earlier proposals for reduced pressure or vacuum-tube transports. In particular, the early theoretical and experimental work of Robert Goddard, the inventor of the liquid fuel rocket, appears to have the greatest overlap with the Hyperloop.
“Goddard’s notes about reduced pressure transports sat in storage for over 30 years, only surfacing after his death in 1945. In US patent 2,511,979, he describes nearly every major feature of the Hyperloop save for the use of linear electric motors for propulsion (he preferred using reaction motors for propulsion), and using special apparatus to minimize the detrimental effects of choked airflow around the capsules. Goddard also described the use of air bearings, but of a very different sort than proposed for the Hyperloop. Many others, of course, have suggested the use of linear electric motors.
