There may be equally good guitarists around, but if you divide quality of playing by condition of the guitar used for public performances, he surely must be way ahead of anybody on the planet.

I think not.
I don’t know if he has other sources of income, but he sells CDs at $20 a time, and seemed to be doing pretty well (including 20 of my $s).
Does he have a tale to tell about that guitar?
I notice some of the frets are split to finely adjust them, presumably to compensate for the warping of the belly.

He may have, but he didn’t share it with us.

David Torn – ever-intrepid guitarist, producer, improviser, film composer and soundscape artist – returns with ‘only sky’, an album that explores the far sonic edges of what one man and a guitar can create, a solo recording of almost orchestral atmosphere.
It is Torn’s first ECM release since 2007’s acclaimed ‘prezens’, a full-band project (with Tim Berne, Craig Taborn and Tom Rainey) that Jazzwise described as “a vibrating collage full of shimmering sonic shapes, a dark, urban electronic soundscape – a potent mix of jazz, free-form rock and technology that is both demanding and rewarding.” Many of those same descriptors apply to ‘only sky’, with its hovering ambient shadows and vaulting flashes of light, its channeling of deep country/blues memories and Burroughsian dreams of North Africa.
Recorded in the acoustically apt hall of the Experimental Media and Performing Arts Center in upstate New York (and then sorted and mixed in Torn’s own mad-scientist lair), ‘only sky’ is an album to get lost in, over and again.
David Torn’s initial ECM album was ‘Best Laid Plans’ (1984); and he also featured on Jan Garbarek’s ‘It’s OK to Listen to the Gray Voice’ before recording his vintage ‘Cloud About Mercury’, with trumpeter Mark Isham and the latter-day King Crimson rhythm section of Tony Levin and Bill Bruford. More recently, Torn produced and mixed Tim Berne’s ECM albums ‘Shadow Man’ and ‘You’ve Been Watching Me’.
Torn’s film scores include those for ‘Friday Night Lights’, ‘Lars and the Real Girl’, ‘Believe in Me’ and ‘The Order’. He has also contributed tones and textures to scores by Ryuichi Sakamoto, Carter Burwell and Mark Isham, and his sounds can be heard in the Academy Award winners ‘Traffic’ and ‘The Departed’.

The sixth album from acclaimed Senegalese kora player Seckou Keita follows his 2013 collaboration with Welsh harpist Catrin Finch. As lovely as the classical concert harp is, its more rustic African cousin, the kora, is capable of producing a surprisingly large range of notes, tones, and timbres, and Keita shows his mastery of it here on this beautifully meditative, almost entirely solo recording. The album’s liner notes describe the introduction of the 22-string kora to the griot Jali Mady ‘Wulung’ by the African bush spirits many centuries ago. So beloved was Jali Mady that upon his death, his fellow griots removed one string from the kora, and in most parts of Africa, the instrument is now played with only 21 strings.
However, in southern Senegal and Guinea Bissau where the kora originates, the 22-string kora is still in use and that is the instrument heard on this enchanting and complex album. A mix of instrumental and vocal pieces, tracks like “Mandé,” with its crystalline arpeggios and rich harmonies, show Keita’s impressive ability to both thrill and sooth, often within moments of each other. “N’doké” effuses a warm joyfulness, while another highlight, the mysterious “If I Only Knew,” walks a darker, more thoughtful path. An utterly graceful collection, 22 Strings is Seckou Keita at his unadorned best.

sounds like a lot of people. :)
There is a bit in the keep when one of the nazi soldiers puts his head through the wall, and the camera keeps panning back and back until he is just a small dot on the edge of a void, and with the hypnotic tangerine dream music that slowly builds. It’s spooky.
I’ve never seen a Tangerine Dream video. I didn’t know such things existed. Only ever listened to their music.

It is a movie, but the music is a big part of it. It’s a tops movie. Nazi soldiers take over a castle, and later when examining the rocks from which it is constructed, they figure that it is not a fort to keep an enemy out, but to keep something imprisoned.

Although a financial and critical failure at the time of its release, The Keep gained a strong fan following during the years and it’s considered by some to be a cult classic. Fans of the movie have made petitions for release of the original cut and for the movie to finally get a DVD/Blu-ray release.
