OK, so I know that they don’t really work for stopping coughing. But I use one with pseudoephedrine in it because it puts me to sleep and this is useful. I obviously don’t use it a lot, because the bottle I have been eking out has a useby of 1/07. So it may well be entirely placebo by now. My question – for poik I guess – is this: are there still any on the market with pseudoeph in them, given the fears about that stuff these days. The one I have is Chemists’Own Expectalix. I had to change from Actifed when they changed the formulation and took the pseudoeph out. I don’t care if it isn’t really doing what I think it is doing, it works for me.

I know it sounds odd. I’m also very susceptible to the drowsy anti-histamines. But I use those things very rarely, so perhaps my body enjoys the novelty.

It’s a constant battle with every pharmacist I go to, to get the cold and flu tablets containing pseudo. They look at you like you’re a meth cook.

I use the 60mg Sudafed. For which you have to ask. Answer questions. Hand over your ID etc. And they write you in the book. And you can only buy 12 at a time. Three days worth at the top usage rate for an adult.

Trouble is I only need it very rarely. Last time it wasn’t recorded. So how long ago was that? This week I got put into the system.

Codral original still has Pseudoephidrine.
Last time I got some the conversation went along the lines of:

Pharmacist: Why do you want it and what are your symptoms?

Me: I want it because I’ve got a raging headache, a fever, my whole body hurts, I can’t breath and have gallons of snot running out of my nose and into my moustache. I haven’t been able to get of the couch for three days and you refused to provide it to my wife. Instead I’ve had to be driven down here as I’m in no condition to drive myself, placing you and all your customers at risk of catching what I’ve got. I also believe in evidence based science and want a product that actually works.

Pharmacist: Here you are sir, I hope you’re feeling better soon.

There is one brand that still has one on the market IIRC, I’ll have a look later today, I tend not to keep it as it was a fave of the pseudorunner for obvious reasons.

We have to use mr kii’s driver’s license when I need antihistamines with pseudoephedrine. I don’t have one and the system won’t accept my Military ID or my Green Card – both official federal IDs.

Fuckers.

Here’s one;

Duro-Tuss Dry Cough + Decongestant (200ml)

You’ll have to ask and do a special dance etc.

ask for a cough medicine that makes you drowsy

under no circumstances buy one that does anything other than make you drowsy or you’ll it will make your cough WORSE not better – it makes you a bit hyper and triggers massive coughing fits.

The good news is yes, there are now pseudoephedrine-containing Sudafed. You have to ask at the chemist and sign for it and take ID with you.

The bad news is that the new version of the pseudoephedrine-containing Sudafed is totally hopeless. It doesn’t work.

My guess is that it was never the pseudoephedrine in Sudafed that was the active ingredient, it was a “dangerous” contaminant that did the job, one has since been removed by better purification.

Indeed.

I went without pseudoephedrine for about ten years, and then when I had phenylephrine it worked pretty well for me. Unlike my whinging family.

Actually, I think it was available all the time. I thought it had disappeared some years ago too, but when I asked here I found it had just been moved off the general shelves. Particularly the 60. So I learnt to ask for it. I’m planning on popping into the pharmacy again tomorrow to pick up another packet for the store cupboard at home. I generally have a pack on the go, a pack in reserve and a pack in the drawer at work. Any or all of which might well go out of date before they actually get used as I use them very sparingly.

I’ll also try my luck at getting the relevent cough mixture too.

I haven’t had one for years either. This one is actually fairly benign, and nicely timed for mostly on the weekend. Trust me, it is entirely familiar when it happens….
