Oh you are cheeky Lucky!!

But it’s very true just the same…as I say with a sigh as I walk around the house collecting cups, plates, cutlery…socks shoes…bedcovers where they are not supposed to be…

If only we could find Not Me in the house, we could issue stern instructions to him/her to pick up and put back…

If only…

I’d quite like to get a cleaner actually – only every couple of months or so to do the stuff we are too lazy to do. But I can’t find any that use the same non-toxic stuff we use…

This can be hard…… but at the same time…. if someone comes to clean your house, they should use the cleaning agents you like and supply. This is what I did when I was cleaning privately.

I did 2 houses and some times 2 schools a week (school 5 days a week) and the kids thought I stayed home and sat on my fat arse:(

I think this would be reasonable. In fact I would expect a commercial cleaning person to use my stuff in the house…

Then again after accidentally looking under SIL’s sink, I’m not sure I would want to clean with some of the almost caustic stuff that some people use…

Nah.. I bought a microfibre thingy, long and thin to slide under VCRs and stuff.. it’s OK, but the amount of dust we have covers it up pretty quickly.. and the dust comes back so quickly that I stopped dusting :D

It’s what you track down in a panic because the SIL or MIL is coming to visit…it’s what you do after you clear a path from the front door to the back deck….so they can view the farms down below instead of looking at your messy house behind them…

Good point – family visits are the only things that motivate us into cleaning :) It’s just no one has visited in ages!!!

Clean floors and a smell of an air freshener will trick a visitor into thinking your house is VERY clean:)

I was told this when I was cleaning years ago. I have certificates in cleaning. Just thought I’d throw that in…:D Thing is … that doesn’t make the loo clean itself.

a good vacuum can make a difference in both the result and how much of a chore vacuuming is. previously i had a few different (good power) vacuums but, they don’t compare to something like a miele vacuum, which is almost a joy to use.

also, i only recently cottoned on to the fact that a lot of the dust was coming from the roof, especially more so after windy weather. prime candidates for fixing are:
- ceiling vents/fans….bunnings and other stores sell automatically closing covers
- ducted heating….clean the intake filter
- downlights…use pieces of pvc twice the length as the insulation is high
- spaces that may have ceiling plaster missing altogether, e.g. cupboards above fridge space….seal with plaster

getting white tiles and/or white grout in high traffic areas is bound to show up very quickly, and too frequently scrubbing grout wears it away.
finally…some people insist on clear (non-frosted) shower screens, which i think is sheer madness. there’s many modern frosting/pattern glass designs (which btw don’t cost a single dollar more than getting clear glass) which don’t need a squeege after every single shower taken. it’s not about being able to get away with a dirty shower screen…only that even water by itself stains clear glass and looks horrible dried and requires cleaning.

Thanks Lucky…now all I need to do is find “the area”…I thought my towel was a suspect so that is in the laundry…I just read somewhere that a “black light” will help with this…we had an aromatic (but hardly romantic) bedroom last night!

I toyed with the idea of ripping up the carpet…gosh I hate carpet…but I might get thrown out with the carpet if I do that…

Good point …try some of this…..

Couple of drops in the water and if you can smell it through out the house….too much mixed in the water.

Found in stupidmarkets in cleaning isle.

Thanks Lucky…stupid question time: do I just spray it on the carpet and then vacuum after a while?

No, it soaks in and kills smells but even nilodor didn’t work when a cat peed inside our last car. It did fade after a while but came back in wet weather. Luckily it was dry when we sold it.

finally…some people insist on clear (non-frosted) shower screens, which i think is sheer madness. there’s many modern frosting/pattern glass designs (which btw don’t cost a single dollar more than getting clear glass) which don’t need a squeege after every single shower taken. it’s not about being able to get away with a dirty shower screen…only that even water by itself stains clear glass and looks horrible dried and requires cleaning.

That’s got me beat too, Aquarium…my MIL has them in all her showers (4 bathroom home – it’s a long story)…and they drive me mad with the specks that are so hard to remove. She has provided those windscreen wiper things but I am the only one to use them that I know of…our shower has a textured (on the outside) sliding 3-piece glass door – you cant see through it and it has wire reinforcing in the glass…straight out of the 1970’s, which is when this house was built…and for my money why would you get clear glass when this other staff is so much more practical? It wipes clean with shower gel or soda bicarb…clean enough to look tidy…

When I was cleaning I’d have to clean 8 bathrooms in 2 hours and the screens were clear……stupid idea…….I’d clean 18 unisex bathrooms as well in 4 hours before I got to those 8 extra bathrooms….. no wonder I nearly jumped off 4 flights of stairs before I quit.

I agree with the white vinegar, I also just slosh it around (we have those tiny 1½ inch tiles on the floor of the shower recess) the floor of the shower if I haven’t had time to clean it …the vinegar is good for the grey water too…

Do you have any other tips on how to get the showers clean in a hurry? I am currently working my way through a bottle of Pantene shampoo… it does the trick, which is why it also strips your hair of life…

I have also found useful (seeing as I was desparate):

shower gel

those nylon craft ribbon balls on a rope that they sell in lieu of the old flannel (face washer) – reserve one just for the cleaning…

The shower gel makes the bathroom sink and bench smell nice…

———————————————————
The easiest way to clean a show …is to do it regularly and often. Showers hide behind a screen and are only seen a few minutes a day.

Mine is done weekly and its quick to do. No build up of soap scum and mold.

I keep an old toothbrush for getting under the sliding door. Ours is a 3 door sliding frosted glass with frames around the glass.

Clear glass doors are great for perving on ya new love interest, but that is about it…they show every trace and water mark. I used to wipe the glass down with the towels in one place I cleaned, as we had laundry services.

I couldn’t wait to move out of home as the small country town stifled me…was sad to leave my father but my mother wanted to run my life for me (still does) and I had other ideas of what I wanted to do…I wouldn’t dream of saying the things children say to their parents now…the message from US TV shows that bad manners is the “go” is wrong…

on my soapbox: after my two eldest (Ms Fashionasta and Ms M) came back from their Rotary Youth Exchange terms (one in Germany and one in Brazil), I came to the conclusion that Australia would be better to align itself culturally with Europe and other nationalities that believe in life is for living rather than making money, and they both agree “absolutely”…

Getting back to the moving out…both the girls asked for their “glorybox” after years of screaming with helpless laughter at my efforts to stock them…go figure!!! So it was “mum, can you spare me a / some…sheets, towels, pans, baking dishes…”

Yes, I prefer old nappies for cleaning the glass areas…the nub (nap? HALP!) is just enough of a scouring effect to clean nicely…I use a spray bottle with 1:1 water (rain) and metho…this is good for the kitchen benches of a morning too if you have cats trying to escape the pup…

That’s good, because that is what ours are…so it’s one tablet dissolved in some water and then added to the thermos, fill ‘er up and then wait? shake the thermos? overnight? I ask because MrD often takes the thermos with him on his trips…or he would if I prepared them…I need to keep him away from the hotboxes…reckon a cuppa and a packed feed from home should do it…

Okay…here we go

pop tablet in thermos

fill almost to the top (so it doesn’t spill over) with boiling water

leave over night

Rinse and bask in the knowledge of a job done easy:)

If you can find it(try your local horsey place) Hydrophane is better. Wont stain clothes or rot stitching. I used it on my saddles.

That last remark is so true, Pomolo. ( I am in the process of sorting my old sheets, towels, etc…what a job!) the 100% cotton goes so much further, lasts a lot longer and therefore has a longer useful life than the poly/cotton.

I was buying 100% cotton sheeting and hemming it for the king singles, not much else seems to fit altho’ some queen sizes do…the poly/cotton stuff is not much good in the heat and humidity as it seems to cling and stifle…now I buy the cheep 100% cotton from WWorths …it only lasts about a year but it does have an extended life beyond the bedroom…it would prolly pay me to learn how to cut out the worn bit and insert another “good” bit from another worn sheet…

I’ve tried that and it’s not so good. Seams that you have to lie on aren’t very comfortable. You’d wonder how a flat seem could be noticeable when you are asleep but they are. Old sheets are good to make pillow cases out of though.

“They” say a nice flat bed (underblanket and sheet etc) ensures a good night’s rest…(provided there is no cat pee aroma in the bedroom of course)…so you may well have a point there…pillow cases are the go then, I’m sure I can find a pattern on the internet…

You don’t need a pattern. Just cut around one you already have and allow for seams and the tuck under flap piece.

Actually I should have added that you need to do it with fabric doubled over because you need 2 sides to a pillow case.

I don’t buy cleaning cloths. I’d prefer to recycle/reuse rather than something that’s just come out of a factory and wrapped in plastic. My cleaning cloths are old (cotton) undies, old (cotton) socks and flannelette pjs. Flannies are the BEST cleaning cloths. My flannies can last 2 years so every second year when my flannie pj top wears thin on the belly where I lean against the sink in the mornings, I buy new pjs. So I cut them into large flat slabs of cloth, all irregular shapes, then do a thin seam around the edge – just fold over twice and straight stitch. Buttons go in the button tin, the scraps (seams, odd bits) go into the compost. Only the elastic goes into the bin.

Old towels are good, too, same treatment – cut out the thinnest part (usually the towel is so thin it tears – I get my money’s worth!!) then hem the rest. I found out a long time ago that if I don’t cut out the thinnest part it’s a sod to hem, and besides it unravels too quickly. That’s why I actually go to the bother of hemming, too – the edges unravel and make a mess in the washing machine.

Heya, yep I do that too except I buy old bedspreads and cotton waffle blankets from charity shops , chenille is wonderful too. I got a cotton king size blanket from the op shop for $5 a couple weeks ago , cut it into face washer size squares and overlocked the lot. I use one or more a day in the kitchen then it goes into a bucket of water with a capful of bleach in it. I oiled some and keep in a bag for dusting, another for the stainless steel cooker ect. Fab for windows, the car ect ect. I haven’t bought a wash cloth in 30 years.

cat pee: metho?

What if it’s in the carpet (cat was hiding and got locked in the bedroom)?
=++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Thanks for all the suggestions…as mentioned in a previous thread I have got rid of this smell…my guess is that it may have only lightly sprayed the carpet: my towel got the full brunt of it and of course anything hanging behind and beside it…the cat that was locked in does tend to spray a bit, I’ve seen her claim a clump of grass…

Halleleujah that it wasn’t a full toilet job into the carpet!

I made some sago and some cream rice for dessert tonight.

Thing is the poxy stainless steal saucepan has caught on the bottom…again.

Always in the same spot…… always the same side…..

How can I get the burnt crap off the base of the pan….. without scrubbing the afternoon away??

Also does steel have a memory, as it catches in the same place every time I use it…..poxy *%#$@ pan… thing is its a good size for cooking.

try soaking in vinegar. could be you have a scratch there, or you tend to put the saucepan slightly off centre the same way each time so that the heat runs up the side there.

Only use wooden spoons……Not sure about the scratch, will look after its cleaned off. I always make sure the pans are center as I hated blacken saucepans as a kid when I did the washing up. As I didn’t blacken it.

I’ll try your tip Bluegreen.

use the chrome polish as for car/motorbike paste to clean off that browning. takes a bit of elbow grease but comes off.

Lucky, I would fill it with water and put it on to boil, then turn the flame off and let sit until it’s cool.

I’ll try this tomorrow, letting it soak over night with vinegar.

It sounds like a hot spot in the base of your saucepan Lucky1. I have a frying pan with the same sort of problem. Very maddening.
