Rev about?

Is this:http://www.iflscience.com/physics/faster-journey-center-earth in fact the conclusion you came to based on similar modelling of non-uniform density?

So, falling through the centre of the Earth from midlands Tasmania, it would take me 38 minutes to end up drowning in the middle of the Atlantic.

Thanks Martin.

Just as well I’m not a physicist, otherwise their statement that these guys went where no physicist has been before would be demonstrably wrong.

Here are my calcs:

https://newtonexcelbach.wordpress.com/2010/07/08/the-hole-through-the-middle-of-the-earth-%e2%80%93-revised-transit-time/

I found 19 min 28.5 sec to the centre, so 38 min 59 sec all the way.

I’ll have a closer look at the article and see if I can find some information about what densities they used.

It seems there is a paper available, but the publishers want nearly $40 for it, so I’m afraid I will be sticking with my guessed densities.

Now all you have to do is tender for the engineering contract.

would you oscillate from one side to the other?

Only if you miss the grab handles on the other side.

With a perfect vacuum and frictionless sides, yes.

:) Wished I kept my old calculations. I was then able to show that the time through the Earth to the far side was identical to the time to orbit to the far side. I don’t remember what I assumed for density.

I came up with that as well. That’s for constant density, so the motion through the hole is simple harmonic.

I also tied it in with Euler’s formula for the buckling load of a column, which I thought was pretty neat.

I got a message from Alex Klotz himself on my blog.

Also a link to a free (pre-publish) version of the original paper.

Ah I see.

The reason is buried in the distant past, before blogs even existing and when google was young.
